The Aztecs were first a wandering group of people known as the Mexica. They came to what is now called the Valley of Mexico between the 12 th and 13 th century. The Aztecs came to Lake Texcoco some time between 1325 and 1345. They built their villages which slowly built up into a magnificent and powerful empire. Their civilization lasted for about 200 years before the Spaniards came and destroyed the empire in the 1500’s

The roofs of the commoners house was usually flat and covered in wooden tiles, or was pitched and had a thatch of palm leaves on the roof. The house itself would usually be made out of sticks or reeds that were woven together, and plastered with clay or mud. Adobe, mud bricks, were sometimes used by commoners to construct their houses. Some commoners decorated their house with bright paint or small decorations. The commoners houses were small and The interior of a commoners house.

Music ,[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],[object Object],for rituals and religious purposes, rather than playing for fun. The instruments that the Aztecs created produced a rather screechy and horrible sound, but the creativity was still there. The Aztecs created wind instruments out of copper, large gourds, or small conch shells. The Aztecs even had a flute called the Cocoloctli which made a strange buzzing sound. There were also a number of different types of rattles, from clay rattlers, to gourd shaped rattlers filled with seeds, pebbles, or beads. A more religious form of a rattler was the Chicahuaztli, it had a longer stick and a jagged point. Animal bones were also use in the creation of new instruments. Tortoise shells, deer antlers, and small and large animal bones were all used in making music. Since the music was more of a communication system in trying to tell the Gods to send more rain, a wrong note could send the wrong message and offend the Gods. An Aztec musician who messed up on the wrong notes could be punished or even executed.
