Nowadays, IT systems are important components of
almost all business operations. The constantly growing
demand for new software platforms or completely new
environments creates the need for data migration.
During the last two years, we gathered the most frequent
and common issues with data transfers from our clients.
They all are related to the quality and amount of the data,
differences between legacy and the new system as well
as defragmented data sources like old files or just many
databases.

1. High quality of the data is the most important element of
the fine data migration. Proper usage of fields (e.g. not using
phone number field for the email address), well-maintained
records.

2. The same or similar data structures between legacy
and the new software system is a dream, but the less
differences between those two systems you have, the less processing
errors you will have (e.g. address in the first system defined as a one
field, in the new system can be defined as a 5 or 6 fields)

3. As fewer data sources as possible. Many Word files, Excel
sheets, databases or TXT files makes the process more manual to
evaluate each file and create a batch function to parse and process
data automatically. It’s not always possible, and as fewer differences
in all these files you have, the less manual work will be required.

4. Well-designed roadmap. The plan that determines how
the data migration will be tested during the whole process to avoid
common errors. It needs to be foreseen in the migration roadmap
at the initial stage and connected directly with the roll-out of the
new software. In order to determine it accurately and avoid errors,
all tests can be made on staging (temporary) platform in an iterative
approach during the process, and finally transferred after or during
the roll-out.
