OBJECTIVES:
BRAND IDENTIFICATION
DESCRIPTION
PROMOTION
KINDS OF LABELLING:
Brand label: gives brand name and logo.
Descriptive label: give information about product, use, construction, care, performance, features.
Grade label: states the quality of a product.
DEFINATION:
“Labelling means to introduce a product for sale by providing comprehensive information about the
product to the target consumer market besides ensuring safety standards of the regulatory body. A
useful elaborated information about the label leaves good impression on the consumers seeking
required details about the product”
GERNERAL REQUIREMENTS:
Particulars must be in either Hindi or English, but nothing can prevent use of other language, in addition to
the language required under this regulation.
Packaged food must not deceptive or false, in any manner.
Label of pre packaged food, shall not separated from it’s container.
Contents on label should be clear, prominent, visible, legible by the consumer.
If container is covered by wrapper, it shall carry, information, which is legible through the outer wrapper.
FASSAI logo and license number shall be displayed on the food package.
SPECIFIC REQUIRMENTS:
FASSAI logo and license number shall be displayed on the food package.
Name of the food.
List of ingredients.
Nutritional information
Declaration regarding Veg. or Non- Veg.
Declaration regarding food Additives.
Name and complete address of the manufacturer or packer.
If food imported in any country, shall bear name and address of importer also.
Net quantity.
Code No./Lot No./Batch No.
Date of manufacturing or packing.
Best before and use by date.
Country of origin for imported food.
Instruction for use.
FASSAI LOGO
The FSSAI logo and license number shall be displayed on the label of the food package.
NAME OF THE FOOD EXAMPLE
The name of the food shall include trade name and description of Food.
Name of the food
 NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION
 Nutritional information facts per 100 gm, serving on the product shall be given.
 Energy value in kcal.
 The amount of protein, carbohydrates(specify quantity of sugar) and fat in gram.
 The amount of any other nutrient for which a nutrition or health claim is made.
 Wherever, numerical information on vitamins and minerals is declared, shall be
expressed in metric units.
NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION EXAMPLE
 LIST OF INGREDIENTS
 The List of ingredients shall contain appropriate title.
 The name of ingredients used in the product shall be listed in the
descending order of their composition by weight or volume.
 A specific name shall be used for ingredients in the list.
 When an ingredient is the product of two or more ingredients, then it
should be accompanied by a list in bracket, but where a compound
constitutes less than 5% of food, the list ingredients , other than food
additives need not to be declared.
 Added water shall be declared, except in cases where water forms a part
of ingredients, but water evaporated in course of manuf. Shall not be
declared.
 Every package of food sold as a mixture or combination shall disclose the
% of the ingredients used in manufacture.

DECLARATION OF VEGETARIAN AND NON VEGETARIAN
LOGO:
DECLARATION REGARDING FOOD ADDITIVES:
If any addition of coloring matter has to be mentioned on the label, shall be displayed in capital
letters
If any extraneous flavoring agent has been added, it also need to be displayed.
If both colour and flavour are used in product, one of the flavoring combined statement need to be
displayed in capital letters.
For example: “ CONTAINS PERMITTED NATURAL COLOUR AND ADDED FLAVOURS”.
If combined declaration of colour and flavour are given, then the International Numerical
Identification number of colour to be mentioned.

 Net quantity by weight or volume or number, as the case may be, shall be
declared on every package.
 In addition to the declaration of net quantity, a food packed in a liquid medium
shall carry a declaration of the drained food.
 Where a package contains a large number of small items of confectionery, each
of which is separately wrapped and it is not reasonably practicable to be
excluded from the net weight of the commodity, then the such immediate
wrapper but, may include the weight of such immediate wrapper if the total
weight of such wrapper not exceeds:
 8%, where such immediate wrapper is a waxed paper or other paper with wax
or aluminum foil under strip.
 6%, in case of other paper of the total net weight of all the items of
confectionery in the package minus the weight of immediate wrapper.

In case of milk and bread, particulars under this clause shall not be
required to be given on the label.
DATE OF MANUFACTURE AND PACKING:
Date, month and year shall be given of the commodity manufactured on the label
If month and the year of manufacture, packing or pre-packing shall be given if the “Best before
date”, of the product is more than three month.
If a particular commodity has short life of less than 3 months, then the date, month and year shall be
mentioned.
DATE OF MANUFACTURE AND PACKING EXAMPLE:
 Date of manufacturing
BEST BEFORE AND USE BY DATE:
The month and years in capital letters. “BEST BEFORE….. MONTH AND YEAR”.
Any perishable item then “BEST BEFORE…. DD/MM/YY.
In Aspartame, expiry date shall not be more than 3 years.
In infant milk instead best before, use by date must be given.
The declaration of best before shall not applicable to
Wines and liquor.
Alcoholic beverages containing more than 10% volume.
BEST BEFORE AND USE BY DATE:
COUNTRY OFORIGIN FOR IMPORTED FOOD:
The country of origin of the food shall be declared on the label of food imported into India.
When food undergoes processing in a second country which changes its nature, in the country in
which the processing is performed shall be considered to be the country of origin for the propose of
labeling.


 COUNTRY OF ORGIN
INSTRUCTION FOR USE:
Instruction for use, including reconstitution, where applicable, shall be included on the label, if
necessary, to ensure correct utilization of the food.

  • 4. SPECIFIC REQUIRMENTS: FASSAI logo and license number shall be displayed on the food package. Name of the food. List of ingredients. Nutritional information Declaration regarding Veg. or Non- Veg. Declaration regarding food Additives. Name and complete address of the manufacturer or packer. If food imported in any country, shall bear name and address of importer also. Net quantity. Code No./Lot No./Batch No. Date of manufacturing or packing. Best before and use by date. Country of origin for imported food. Instruction for use.
  • 5. FASSAI LOGO The FSSAI logo and license number shall be displayed on the label of the food package.
  • 6. NAME OF THE FOOD EXAMPLE The name of the food shall include trade name and description of Food. Name of the food
  • 7.  NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION  Nutritional information facts per 100 gm, serving on the product shall be given.  Energy value in kcal.  The amount of protein, carbohydrates(specify quantity of sugar) and fat in gram.  The amount of any other nutrient for which a nutrition or health claim is made.  Wherever, numerical information on vitamins and minerals is declared, shall be expressed in metric units.
  • 9.  LIST OF INGREDIENTS  The List of ingredients shall contain appropriate title.  The name of ingredients used in the product shall be listed in the descending order of their composition by weight or volume.  A specific name shall be used for ingredients in the list.  When an ingredient is the product of two or more ingredients, then it should be accompanied by a list in bracket, but where a compound constitutes less than 5% of food, the list ingredients , other than food additives need not to be declared.  Added water shall be declared, except in cases where water forms a part of ingredients, but water evaporated in course of manuf. Shall not be declared.  Every package of food sold as a mixture or combination shall disclose the % of the ingredients used in manufacture.

  • 13. DECLARATION REGARDING FOOD ADDITIVES: If any addition of coloring matter has to be mentioned on the label, shall be displayed in capital letters If any extraneous flavoring agent has been added, it also need to be displayed. If both colour and flavour are used in product, one of the flavoring combined statement need to be displayed in capital letters. For example: “ CONTAINS PERMITTED NATURAL COLOUR AND ADDED FLAVOURS”. If combined declaration of colour and flavour are given, then the International Numerical Identification number of colour to be mentioned.

  • 16.  Net quantity by weight or volume or number, as the case may be, shall be declared on every package.  In addition to the declaration of net quantity, a food packed in a liquid medium shall carry a declaration of the drained food.  Where a package contains a large number of small items of confectionery, each of which is separately wrapped and it is not reasonably practicable to be excluded from the net weight of the commodity, then the such immediate wrapper but, may include the weight of such immediate wrapper if the total weight of such wrapper not exceeds:  8%, where such immediate wrapper is a waxed paper or other paper with wax or aluminum foil under strip.  6%, in case of other paper of the total net weight of all the items of confectionery in the package minus the weight of immediate wrapper.
  • 18. LOT/CODE/BATCH IDENTIFICATION EXAMPLE In case of milk and bread, particulars under this clause shall not be required to be given on the label.
  • 19. DATE OF MANUFACTURE AND PACKING: Date, month and year shall be given of the commodity manufactured on the label If month and the year of manufacture, packing or pre-packing shall be given if the “Best before date”, of the product is more than three month. If a particular commodity has short life of less than 3 months, then the date, month and year shall be mentioned.

  • 21. BEST BEFORE AND USE BY DATE: The month and years in capital letters. “BEST BEFORE….. MONTH AND YEAR”. Any perishable item then “BEST BEFORE…. DD/MM/YY. In Aspartame, expiry date shall not be more than 3 years. In infant milk instead best before, use by date must be given. The declaration of best before shall not applicable to Wines and liquor. Alcoholic beverages containing more than 10% volume.
