2. Introduction
Throughout my travels, I have taken
the time to explore each destination via
walking and hiking as well as the
occasional run. I have always been
careful with each type of exercise to
prevent any injury. It got me thinking
about the types of injuries people
receive from sports and physical
activities. Here are the top five types
of prevalent injuries.
3. 1. Sprains
Sprains occur when a sudden force injures a ligament on a bone
that forms a joint or a force applied to the joint itself. Sprains can be
minor if the ligament is merely stretched, or they can be severe if
the ligament is torn or ruptured. When there is a tear or rupture of a
ligament, a physician should be consulted. Treating minor sprains
involves elevating the injured leg or arm, applying ice to reduce
swelling and using compression. A minor sprain is usually resolved
in one or two weeks.
4. 2. Strains
Strains, often referred to as "pulled muscles," are tears in
muscles resulting from sudden or forceful movements
that abruptly stretch or contract the muscles. Strains can
result in minimal tearing or damage to muscle fibers, or
they can completely rupture muscle tissue if the stress
upon the muscle is severe. One common strain is known
as a pulled hamstring. If the pain continues, a person with
a strained muscle should consult a physician.
5. 3. Fractures
Fractures (broken bones) that result from a severe fall or
collision are serious injuries accompanied by much pain that
require immediate medical treatment. X Rays are taken of such
injuries, and physicians will place the injured bones in a cast to
immobilize the area while it heals. Or, if there is extensive
damage to bones, surgery may be necessary.
6. 4. Concussions
A concussion, or injury to the brain, is caused by a severe impact on
a person's skull. If the concussion is mild, healing will occur with
rest. But, if it is critical, a concussion can be prolonged for as much
as a year or more. When a concussion occurs, the victim should seek
immediate medical attention so that the damage to the brain will not
result in the loss of any faculties.
7. 5. Injuries from Excessive Use
Such conditions as joint pain, shin splints, stress fractures, bursitis
and joint pain (often in the elbow or knee) are overuse injuries.
These conditions frequently occur in athletes who engage in one
particular sport and in children who train too intensely. The use of
ice and compression, as well as rest and elevation of the injury, are
effective treatments.
