The document discusses the results of a study on the effects of a new drug on memory and cognitive function in older adults. The double-blind study involved giving either the new drug or a placebo to 100 volunteers aged 65-80 over a 6 month period. Testing showed those receiving the drug experienced statistically significant improvements in short-term memory retention and processing speed compared to the placebo group.

What is described in this chart is the simplest and most used “leadership model”. The triangular shape and the building blocks, suggest that the items at the bottom are foundational items to sustain the items on top. The meaning of this triangle is self explanatory: The role of leadership is foundational in creating a vision of what must be achieved and to enable and energize people to achieve it, via principles and systems designed to inspire people behaviors that collectively deliver the expected results.
This simple model can be tracked down to be the leadership model in use since the beginning of civilization, or even beyond that. It is hard to imagine any human organization being capable of achieving sustainable results without a formal or informal application of this model. The logic is that to align behaviors of many individuals toward a common goal, a leader must follow, formally or informally, all the key steps identified in this triangle:
Align people around general Principles to follow. These Principles over time have been called in different way. They are the Commandments in the Religions, the Constitutions of the Nations and the Core Values in the large Corporations. The intention of these Principles is to distinguish in very general terms what is a good behavior from what is a bad behavior in respect to the results that the society must deliver. It’s not a coincidence that in most of the case the principles look very similar. Not killing or hurting others, unless they are killing hurting us, respecting parents and other authorities, respecting people in general, not stealing not laying, no cheating, etc. They all seems obviously needed in all human organization to build the mutual trust needed for building a society with common goals
Align people around the “Systems” to follow. These Systems also have been called with different names but the concept is the same. They are the Rules, the Norms, the Practices or the Laws to follow. They are also the Job Descriptions and the Work Processes in the large corporations. The reason why systems are needed, on top of principles, is that there is the need of more detailed description of the behavior that is not provided by the principles. To keep it simple, people can follow principle in many different ways but there is only one rule or law to follow.
Already at this first stage of introduction of the key concepts, it becomes clear how important has been and still is the exchange of information among individuals. Without exchange of information there wouldn’t be any possibility to align individuals around common goals. Also it becomes clear how any society of humans requires standardized behavior to function. These concepts are very important in the context of the theories that we are going to present
The direct experience and learning in high complex and sophisticated organizations, like the large corporations, is very important to extend the leadership model, through the addition of three additional building blocks.
The first building block is the Organizational Model. In order to be able to sustain some sort of repeatable system or work process, it is needed what we call normally an “Organization” properly designed to do that. With that word we mean many different things, but in general we can assume that the 6 fundamental pillars of an Organization are the ones I summarize in the triangle: A structure, that divides the roles and responsibilities, the description of the tasks of the people working in this structure, the description of the communication and decision making process and finally the reward systems for people working in the organization. The assumption is that without a proper formal Organization, it is impossible to sustain repeatable work processes in large and complex organizations
The second building block is Daily Direction Setting. It means that the people working in the organization must have established a daily review of the results and they have
