The magazine represents social groups associated with reggae music through the music and visual elements featured. It portrays stereotypes of reggae being associated with people of black Caribbean backgrounds as well as white festival attendees. The front cover features an artist with dreadlocks and darker lips, visual traits stereotypically associated with the reggae scene and smoking. Photos inside portray symbols like hats associated with Rastafarians, an important religion for reggae fans. The front cover artist is black to represent the black community of reggae lovers and play into stereotypes not usually seen on magazines like NME and Q.
1. How does your media product
represent particular social
groups?
2. My media product represents particular social
groups by the music the magazine is based
on. For example, the Reggae genre
represents a social group in its self. The
stereotype usually paired with Reggae music
is for people of a black Caribbean
background or upbringing. Another
stereotype matched with Reggae music is
also white males and females that love
Reggae and usually are regular festival
goers.
3. I choose for the artist on the front cover to be wearing a laid back
jumper which anyone could wear as I tried to represent how
different Reggae artists and the people who love Reggae are.
This is because they are all generally not into material goods
like lovers and artists of other music genres, such as R&B and
hip-hop are. I then chose for the artist on my front cover to be
in particular somebody with dreadlocks as it represents the
main stereotype for somebody in the Reggae scene. The
darkness of the lips which is usually associated with smoking
represents people of the Reggae scene or somebody with a
background of the Reggae culture. I purposely made sure that
the artist had darker lips for this as I did not want to have a
massive article which stated artists smoking, but wanted to
make the magazine realistic by showing that the artist probably
does smoke without making it obvious and promoting it. On the
contents page the main photo in the middle of the double page
the hat that the performer is wearing i chose to include out of
all the photos purposely as it represents the Rastafarians which
is a main religion followed by people who love reggae music.
4. By the artist on the front cover being black is
purpospouly done. This is because it
represents the black community of the
Reggae lovers. As well as this it is a very
large stereotype which is the representation I
tried to portray. This is not usually seen on
other magazines. For example, NME and Q
usually have a predominantly white
male/female artist on the front cover.
