3. Teenage girls
Teenage girls are represented in 2 ways in
this film. This first way they are shown is
being strong and brave. This character is the
one who has to save people and stop the
killer and she is the first one to believe and
understand what is going on. They portray
this by:
• What she says “whatever you do, don’t
fall asleep” this shows she knows how the
killer works and because she understands
she is seen as less venerable.
• The way she speaks. She is very assertive
and the fact she is telling people what to
do shows she is in control which gives her
more power.
• She doesn't wear white “girly” clothing
which shows her as less venerable.
Gender: Female
Age: 15-18
Ethnicity: White
Nationality: American
Social class: Middle class
4. Teenage girls
The second way they are represented is a
more traditional way that girls are
represented in films. In horror films it is
very common for the female characters to
be seems as very venerable and innocent
and the ones that get killed first or need
saving. Girl being less powerful and
venerable follows gender stereotypes
• They dress them in white clothing to
give connotations on innocence and
purity.
• Less makeup than older female
characters, again making them look
younger and therefore more
venerable.
• They are normally shown with a male
character, to show the contrast
between how powerful he is
compared to her.
5. Teenage boys
Teenage boys in this film are also represented
in two ways. The first one is very innocent and
lovely and in this film he is very good looking
and is played by Johnny Depp. He is
represented in this trailer buy the way he looks
as he doesn't’t really have many lines to say. If
you compare his to the other teenage boy in
the film he looks a lot more innocent
• He has his clothes on, which makes his look more
innocent around girls
• The clothes he has on are softer, lighter coloured
clothes clothes.
• He is at home and isn't being treated by the
police as a criminal.
• The times he does speak he is asking girls
questions. This show he needs them for
something as so makes him less powerful.
• The fact that he is good looking represents the
target audience as well, as it is saying that
teenage girls may just go and watch the film
because a good looking actor is in it.
Gender: Male
Age: 17-20
Ethnicity: White
Nationality: American
Social class: Middle class
6. The dangerous teenage boy
The second way they are represented is as
a dangerous teenage boy, who you would
want your daughters to stay away from.
This is the more conventional way that
teenage boys are represented in films, and
follows stereotypes. He is shown as more
powerful and more dangerous because
• He is is dressed in darker clothes and ones
that are associated with danger eg a leather
biker jacket.
• The first time we see him in the trailer he is
half naked with a girl in a bed room, this
shows he incent a innocent little boy.
• Also in this scene the girl then starts being
killed buy the supernatural force and there
is blood all over her, because he is in the
room with her it looks like he is to blame.
• You also see him in prison with shows he is
trouble, bad news and dangerous.
7. The villain
The villain in this film is shown as very scary,
this is because it is a horror film and the
purpose of it is to scare the audience. They
show his in two way in the film, firstly in a
physical form where you can actually see him
and then secondly as a supernatural force that
kills teenagers. However both these ways
represent him in the same way, as a
dangerous horrible killer. This fits with
stereotypes very well.
• He doesn’t look human, he has a prosthetic
on his face which is all bumpy and blistered
and red and scarred.
• He kills people, the fact that he kills
teenagers who are still seen as venerable
makes him seem even more dangerous and
mean.
• He also seems more dangerous because his
main target is the main female character.
Gender: Male
Age: 40+
8. The parents
The parents of the teenagers are represented
by one character in the trailer, but she is
shown worried and protective over her
daughter. This is a very common
representation of parents and I think this fits
stereotypes very well.
This character also makes the other female
characters look more venerable because as
she is older it shows how young the
teenagers really are and reminds the
audience that they are still actually children.
Also the fact that she has more make up on
and if you compare her image to the
teenager girls it makes them look more
innocent. Finally its shows the typical power
struggle between teenager and parent as she
is telling her what to do and she has control
of her.
Gender: Female
Age: 40+
Ethnicity: White
Nationality: American
Social class: Middle class
10. Children
The little boy at the start is shown as
cute and innocent. He is very
venerable because he is a child and he
is shown to be innocent. This follows
conventions of any films as children at
stereotypically the venerable innocent
ones. The fact that he is dressing up
for Halloween and is trick or treating
shows how young he is and this also
shows the fun happy side of
Halloween. The juxtaposition of this is
people being killed and so this make
the film even more scary. Also the
fact that the boy watching v on the
sofa has no idea what is happening
outside his house should how naive
and innocent he is.
Gender: Male
Age: 5-10
Ethnicity: White
Nationality: American
Social class: Middle
class
11. Women
Gender: Female
Age: 35+
Ethnicity: White
Nationality: American
Social class: Middle class
12. Women
The women in this film are represented in very conventional ways. They are shown as
weak, in danger, less powerful then men, venerable and emotional. The women in the
trailer represent the women in the film in a few ways
• The group of women show how groups of women act, but it shows that even in
groups they are still venerable and helpless If someone wants to hurt them.
• The women in bed is filing her nails, this representation isn't to-do with horror
films but it does show how image Conscious women are.
• The women who is shocked buy the horrific murder scene she has just seen shows
how emotional women are and the fact that she is shock shows just how horrible
the scene will be and that it is something that we don’t see everyday.
• Finally the women who runs out of the house away from the killer, shows a bit
more bravery and strength, but she doesn't’t actually get out of danger. The fact
that she is running away and screaming “somebody help me” and banging on a
door to try and get someone to help her shows how venerable and in danger she
is, which makes the trailer and therefor the film more scary.
13. Murderer
Gender: Male
Age: 25+
The murderer in this film is represented in again
very conventional ways, scary, dangerous and
evil.
• Quite often you see his in point of view shots
form the victim this puts the audience in the
victims position and makes the trailer more
scary.
• Also the shots are all very dark when he is
around, or he had a make or costume on so
this hides his identity and also means you
don’t know where he is and if you are safe.
• Also a low angle shot is used on him quite
often, for example of the stairs. This gives
him more power and the victim looks more
weak.
15. The murderer
Gender: Male
Age: 40+
The representation of the murderer
in the film follows stereotypes and
conventions of horror movie. He is
heartless and kills 13 people, he
kills lots of different people which
shows no on is safe and he is
portrayed as very dangerous.
16. Women
Gender: Male
Age: 18-50
Nationality: American
The women in the film again follow
representational stereotypes, in both the
example on the right, they are both bout to
be killed, this shows how venerable they are
because they are clearly in danger.
• In the the first one you can see the
shadow of the murder weapon in the
back ground the fact that she has no idea
may represent low intelligence or being
clueless. She looks very innocent and
helpless as well as covered up with not
much make up on which could show her
innocence.
• In the second one she is running away
from something but because of the
nature of the trailer, were it counts up to
13 you know this is one of his victims and
that she is going to die.
17. Men
Gender: Male
Age: 18-55
Nationality: American
The men in the film are not represented in the
stereotypical way. Men are stereotypically
seen as the powerful ones who are very strong
and intelligent and never really in danger and
always in control But in this film they are
victims so this doesn’t work.
• In the first example on the right the can is
clueless as to the fact he is about the get
killed and so his shocked reckon to being
stabbed shows he isn't in control of the
situation.
• The second one also has no idea and does
slightly try and fight the murder but isn't
physically strong enough with goes against
convention as men are meant to be strong.
18. Teenagers
Gender: Male
Age: -18
Nationality: American
The teenagers in the film follow stereotypes of
how a teenagers are normally represented.
• In the second explain the teenager are clearly
about to have sex. This is a stereotype of
teenagers that they are very hormonal and are
very focused on the opposite sex. Also the boy
denies they were doing anything to the killer,
this shows he is lying and being deviant this is
again is another stereotype of teenagers.
• In the first one the teenager is on his own
maybe representing teenagers want a sense of
independence but then he ends up being
killed so it shows that they are not really ready
and can’t survive completely on their own.
20. Females
• The female in my film will follow typical
gender stereotypes she will be the more
venerable character and will look to the boy
for protection. She will be represented as the
more emotional, scared, venerable character.
• She will be a British 20 year old from a middle
class background.
21. Males
• The male characters in my film are represented in two ways…
• The first one is the girls boyfriend, they have
just brought a house together and so they are
clearly in a loving long term relationship, he is
very loving towards her and acts as the
protective, dominant one. He is the more
mentally and physically strong one a follows
gender stereotypes.
• He is will be a British 20 year old from a
middle class back ground.
22. The murderer
• The second way that males will be represented
will be through the murder. He will be a more
powerful dangerous male and he will be more
cleaver and mentally strong than the other
characters.
• His identity won’t be known in the trailer, all you
will know is that he will be a male about 40+ and
who speaks English. The audience will question
how human he is and will wonder if a
supernatural force is present.
