โ€ข Establishment of LEARN
(Rotary sponsored teacher training service provider)
โ€ข Global Grant application 1525855
โ€ข Future Global Grants for teacher training
Open discussion:
โ€ข Umbrella projects facilitating Global Grant projects
Topics
Remote nation of 28m. people
attractive to tourists:
โ€ข great scenery and cultural interest
โ€ข wide range of available activities
(mountaineering, trekking, rafting, kayaking, paragliding, etc.)
but
โ€ข the poorest nation outside Africa
Why Nepal?
Nepalese people are seen as
hard-working and friendly
Their poverty is not always apparent
Early life of
Gyan Bahadur Pun
Headmaster, Paudwar Secondary School
1968 โ€“ 2002
The hardship of achieving
an education in Nepal
Break for video
โ€ข Starting school at age 11
โ€ข Becoming a teacher at 16 while in Class 5
โ€ข Studying at home by firelight at night
โ€ข Copying a friendโ€™s textbooks
โ€ข Going to Pokhara for two years teacher training
โ€ข Shortage of money โ€“ eating nothing for 4 days
โ€ข Hostel life - 70 students, no electricity, no beds
He returned to become head teacher, aged 21
He held the position for 34 years
Hear Gyan describe:
Gyan Bahadur Pun
โ€ข Less than 50% of households have access to
piped drinking water
โ€ข Over a third of houses do not include a toilet
โ€ข Two thirds of households rely on firewood for
cooking;
10% use cow dung
โ€ข Only two thirds of households have phones
(mostly mobiles)
โ€ข Just 12% of households have a motor vehicle,
most of them scooters. A third have bicycles
โ€ข Adult literacy 57.4%
Source: 2011 census
Some poverty Indicators
Combating Poverty
Short term answers:
โ€ข Water projects
โ€ข Sanitation projects
โ€ข Health projects
โ€ข Classroom construction

Break for video

Managed by:
โ€ข Department of Education
โ€ข National Council for Education Development
โ€ข 34 Educational Training Centers (ETCs)
50,000 schools (36,000 govโ€™t, 14,000 private - 2010)
Most students leave school at year 10
Some go on to year 12 (Higher Secondary)
What is the Government doing?
The Challenge
Since 2009, all new Government teachers must
have completed Year 12
From July 2016, all Government teachers likewise
(many unqualified teachers leaving)
But
โ€ข a third of teachers in Government schools are
privately funded, not subject to these standards
โ€ข the Government lacks the funding to provide
adequate ongoing teacher training
Government teaching standards
Weโ€™ve addressed:
โ€ข Why Nepal?
โ€ข Why teacher training?
Any questions?
