Hello everyone, my name is Molly Friend and I am a Program Specialist for Rotary’s Programs for young leaders and I will be presenting about how to get started in Rotary’s Programs for Young Leaders.
As an employee of the secretariat of Rotary International, myself and the team are eager and ready to support you and your Rotary clubs and districts in achieving successful participation in Youth service. We are committed to making programs for young leaders a vital part of your Rotary experience. By taking the time to educate and equip yourself through attendance at this presentation you will be able to successfully bring programs for young leaders to your club!
The goal for this presentation is to educate Rotarians about Rotary’s programs for Young Leaders and to give you some clear and actionable steps you can take to get Interact and Rotaract clubs started in your communities.
While we may have individuals with varying levels of experience with programs for young leaders attending today, the intended audience for this presentation is for Rotarians interested in youth service, who have not previously sponsored Interact or Rotaract clubs or RYLA programs. We will not be reviewing Youth Exchange at this time, as it involves an intensive certification process that could not be reviewed in this time.
Now that we have defined the purpose of this presentation, let’s review what will be covered today:
First we want to make sure everyone understands why we engage in youth service. What's the point?
Then I will review our Interact and Rotaract club program to make sure everyone has a clear understanding of what each program entails.
Then most in depth, we will go through actionable steps you can take to get a Rotaract and or an Interact club started in your community.
After Interact and Rotaract I will explain another format you can engage young people in through an option called RYLA.
I will round out the presentation touching on Rotary international’s youth protection policies that help ensure safe environments for all involved in the programs.
Lastly, There will be an opportunity for questions. These slides will be made available online afterwards and I will be sharing my contact information however. As we go through the steps I highly encourage you take notes on ideas for your club as we work the steps.
So let’s get to it.
So why should you as a Rotarian care about youth?
As one of Rotary’s five avenues of service- youth service- recognizes the importance of empowering youth and young professionals through leadership development programs
As a Rotarian the benefits for your participation are great. You will:
recognize and embrace the positive change implemented by young leaders.
Have the opportunity to actively empower young people to take action in their communities and grow as leaders.
FOR YOUTH Why?
We need to be activating them now. Young people can be providing real contributions and solutions to our areas of focus, today. When you think about how Rotary defines youth all the way up to 30 there are young adults who have accomplished much more than some people can say they have accomplished in their entire lives.
Steve Culbertson, CEO of YSA the organization behind Global Youth Service Day
Brain science - young persons brain hard wire to take risks, we need brave solutions.
They are driven by peer pressure, this is not always negative, peer pressure can be positive and encourage helpful and service behaviors. Peer pressure can be harnessed to make friends and get involved in doing service with friends.
Our civic leaders and philanthropic donors were taught to donate and serve as young people. We must be teaching and demonstrating philanthropy to sustain the rotary foundation and other organizations around the world that would not survive with charitable contributions.
Lastly, it some communities this experience may be their only opportunity to serve and lead.
Our programs provide experience and opportunity that otherwise wouldn’t be present.
Interact clubs bring together young people ages 12-18 to develop leadership skills while discovering the power of Service Above Self.
Interact clubs can be based inside of schools where it is a common practice to provide club opportunities within the school. They can be in public and private schools. However some regions or communities may not have a practice of offering clubs within the school or it may be the goal of the Interact club to bring together students from various schools and so it would be better based in a community.
The objectives of Interact are:
-to Take action through service – to encourage young people to give back to their communities through various service initiatives.
Build international understanding- with the strength of the global Rotary network introduce Interact club members to the world.
Leadership development – this often occurs through experiential learning, simply by creating a leadership role within a club, as a president or committee leader, provides a new opportunity to lead than otherwise offered to that young person.
I will like to share some global figures about the scale and reach of this program. But first let’s get a sense from the room of experience in Interact.
Please raise your hand if you have been previously involved in Interact.
Now, those who have interest in starting an Interact club in their community.
Today we estimate there are half a million Interactors around the world
In about 22,000 Interact clubs
And 37% of Rotary clubs are sponsoring Interact clubs. Which allows for a considerable amount of growth for Rotary clubs that haven’t sponsored Interact to join in the program.
The next level in our program offering for youth is the Rotaract program. Rotaract brings together younger people ages 18-30 to exchange ideas, develop leadership and professional skills, and to have fun through service.
Sounds a lot like the Rotary experience, now doesn’t it?
Rotaract clubs can be based in universities, as a one of many club offerings provided at university institutions or can be based in our communities in the same way Rotary clubs are based.
You will not a slight shift here in Rotaract to focus on professional networks as this program encompasses young professionals developing and starting careers.
Let’s gauge everyone’s experience and interest in Rotaract-
Please raise your hand if you have been previously involved in Rotaract
Now, those who have interest in starting an Rotaract club in their community.
To understand the scope of Rotaract here are the global figures on Rotaract. Today there is an estimated 250,000 Rotaractors around the world in about 11,000 clubs. You can see approximately about half the size of Interact. And only 27% of Rotary clubs sponsor a Rotaract club- again a great opportunity for your club to start a Rotaract club. For the coming Rotary year Rotary President-elect Barry Rassin has set a bold goal for Rotary, to double these numbers in membership, total clubs, and Rotary clubs sponsoring Rotaract clubs.
The Rotaract program was started in 1968 and this year we are celebrating the 50th anniversary with many events and activities there is a special exhibit on the 600 level of the south building celebrating the past present and future of Rotaract.
Knowing these basics on Interact and Rotaract clubs. Let’s get started on the steps to form a club of your own.
Step 1- Familiarize yourself on all things Interact & Rotaract..
A great place to start is by reading the program handbooks which are available for download on rotary.org, the direct hyperlink is listed above. The handbooks provide more detail for chartering clubs and helping clubs grow.
For example by reviewing these materials you will learn about what sponsorship entails. You may have noticed I have been talking about Interact and Rotaract in relation to a Rotary club sponsoring them. Interact and Rotaract clubs must be affiliated to at least one Rotary club to officially form through sponsorship. Up to three Rotary clubs can sponsor an Interact and Rotaract clubs to if they would like to share the role of supporting the Interact/ Rotaract club.
Step 2 is to Gather a team. Bring together a group of Rotarians and community members committed to supporting the formation of an Interact and or Rotaract Club. If you are planning to work with a school or university bringing educators and administrators from the school into the team is a wise choice.
In step 3 we ask you to know your audience.
This where you can make decisions and determine if an Interact or Rotaract club is better fit for your community. Knowing your audience is like conducting a community assessment.
Assess the makeup of your community.
Are there schools in need of service opportunities? Is your community home to a university or vocational schools? Or would youth or young professionals be best served in a community based club?
Here is where you can determine if Interact or Rotaract is best for your community. Important things to consider when working with Interact 12 -18 year olds, tweens and teenagers. What is important to them, how do they communicate and disseminate messages? More likely to text than email, aren’t really on Facebook. Factors such as these.
Rotaract may seem like your route, if there are universities or good size group of young professionals in your community. Rotary’s membership team recently released an Engaging Younger Professionals Toolkit that helps clubs better understand this demographic. You can access the tool kit at the URL listed on the slide.
And in step four we put this knowledge into action. We ask you to Strategize to attract your audience.
After you have determine a target audience and identify the locations and opportunities to promote the formation of a new Rotaract club.
Schedule a kickoff event that will appeal most to your target audience to introduce potential members to the club for Interact – a pizza party or introductory service project for Rotaract - a happy hour, service project, info session, or your own creative invention.
We often receive the question-
How do we find the young people? Its really not any different than how Rotary clubs find new members. Its about our personal networks and connections. In the same way you may invite an acquaintance or colleague to your Rotary club. Think about your connections to younger people, whether its your child, your grandchild, a younger coworker or the young person at your church. They aren’t mystical creatures, we are connected to young people.
With your plan outlined to bring people to your new Interact or Rotaract club. step 5- encourages you create and share promotional materials. To Get the word out. Solidify your value proposition and clearly articulate benefits of joining your Rotaract club in promotional materials. Just as you can Use Rotary’s Brand Center to create digital and print resources for Rotary clubs these resources are available for Rotaract clubs too. Share your new materials like promotional cards, posters and logo templates, at your kick off event and on social media.
Here are some examples of the templates available and there more available at the resource booth.
You’ve created a strategy to bring in new members, you’ve scheduled and promoted a kick off event. Now,
Step 6, Host your kickoff event. Engage all attendees and talk to them about why they came and how they are interested in changing their community or growing as a leader—make sure to get their contact information.
Step 7- Follow up with attendees. Personally invite them to the first club meeting.
Now that you have new members for the new Interact or Rotaract.
For Step 8 we ask Rotarians to Support the first few months of club meetings. Your team should assist in the early stages of the club by helping set up the club administration. Advise on adopting the Standard Club Constitution and customizing the Recommended Bylaws, organizing officer elections, selecting meeting locations, and arranging an initial service project.
As the goal of the program is to provide leadership opportunities for young people its important to be available but not too intrusive. Allow the young people to make decisions and be present to make sure their decisions are in line with Rotary policies. In the instances of community-based Rotaract clubs, they can be very self sufficient. In all instances your visibility and availability will help ensure success.
Now that the club is up and running,
Step 9. Make it official! Certify the Interact or Rotaract club. Fill out the certification form
Which is shown here. Basically requesting contact information signature from Sponsoring Rotary club or clubs presidents and the signature of the district governor.
Along with the form, there one-time US$50 certification fee to Rotary International for Rotaract clubs and there is no cost for chartering Interact clubs.
Then you will receive an official certificate from your nearest Rotary office.
Its not over yet! For the final step, Stay connected! Plan to regularly attend the Interact or Rotaract club’s meetings and events and invite the Interactors and Rotaractors to collaborate with your Rotary club in your activities and events.
When Interact, Rotaract, and Rotary clubs partner in service we ensuring clear connections to Rotary and help young people understand they are a part of a larger collective.
In addition to staying connected to your newly formed Rotaract or Interact club, stay connected to Rotary International.
For Interact clubs annually report to RI the club advisors information.
For Rotaract clubs encourage the Rotaract club members to report the club members, officers, and advisor annually.
Stay up to date on the latest Rotaract news and trends by following Rotaract & Interact on Facebook and subscribing to the monthly Young Leaders in Action newsletter provided by Rotary International on My Rotary.
Now lets talk about a program that can serve as great lead generator for Interact or Rotarct clubs or could serve as your kick off event in the formation of an Interact or Rotaract club.
RYLA which stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. RYLA often takes the form or a leadership workshop or retreat most often organized by Rotary districts.
Objectives of RYLA
-to encourage and assist youth leaders and potential leaders in responsible and effective leadership through and facilitated training experience
-to publicly recognize the positive qualities of young people rendering service in your communities.
RYLA gives the participate the opportunity to –
Develop leadership skills
increase self confidence
Gain exposure to a variety of issues and people
Make new friends
Obtain career information and skills
Meet community leaders and mentors
As you will see on the next slide this program can be interpreted into a variety of ways and formats to meet the specific needs of your community. As it is highly customizable and adaptable, there is limited involvement from Rotary International on this program. There are no requirements to report your RYLA activities to rotary international nor does Rotary International dictate how they should be operated, although we do appreciate hearing your success stories!
RYLA programs thrive when they meet the needs of your community. Here are some examples of Innovative RYLAs.
Rotary clubs in the Netherlands and Germany came together to host a RYLA for 18-28 year olds that focused on International Relations within the European union. Giving attendees experiences in diplomacy and negotiations to further professional careers.
In the US a district in the state of Colorado recognized teens with physical disabilities were not receving access to leadership opporruntiies. Therefore they hosted a RYLA for teens with physical disabilities in partnership with a facility that was able to make accommodations and provide necessary services for teens with disabilities.
And a final innovative example, after conducting a needs assessment within their community, a Rotary district in India determined there was a need for executive training for young exectives and provided this training for young professionals for their RYLA.
You can find more inspiration and ideas for different RYLAs by searching RYLA on Rotary showcase, where people share their service projects. If your district offers a RYLA make sure they are sharing their RYLA on Rotary Showcase.
To round out this presentation I want to bring to your attention a very critical element across any programs that involve legal minors - so for Interact clubs and RYLAs with participants under the age of legal majority.
As responsible leaders and stewards of opportunities for youth we must maintain safe environments and be prepared and trained to protect children.
Our Rotary International policy outlines:
strives to create and maintain a safe environment for all youth
Rotarians, and other volunteers must safeguard the children and young people they come into contact with
protect them from physical, sexual, and emotional abuse
To learn more about these policies Rotary provides a Youth Protection guide, and an online learning course about protecting youth program participants created for club level Rotarians involved in Youth service.
In your district there is an assigned District youth protection officer that will be knowledgeable about Rotary’s policies but will also have an understanding of local laws that must be complied with in addition to Rotary’s baseline requirements. Additionally, if your district implements the Youth Exchange program, the Youth Exchange officer will be a great resource.
Beyond, Rotary’s “official programs” it is strongly advised to apply these guidelines in any other youth related events and activities your club undertakes or with any vulnerable populations, like people with disabilities, and the elderly.
I am rounding out my presentation portion with Youth Protection as it essential component to encourage successful youth programs. My sincere desire for you all is that now equipped with the knowledge on Rotary’s programs for Young Leaders to confidently bring this knowledge back to your clubs and put it into action by forming Interact and Rotaract Clubs. Interact and Rotaract are opportunities and platforms for our young people to lead, take action and make positive changes right now in our communities. As your Rotaract and Interact clubs grow, share their successes on Rotary showcase and on social media. I wish you the best in starting your own Rotaract & Interact clubs and hope you have lots of fun along the way.
