6. The Historical Background Of O. Henry
O. Henry was an American writer whose short stories are known
for wit, wordplay and clever twist endings. He wrotenearly600
stories about life in America.
He was born as WilliamSidney Porter on September 11,1862in
Greensboro, northCarolina. His father AlgernonSidneyPorter,
was a medical doctor. WhenWilliamwas three his mother died
and he was raised by his grandmother and aunt. He left school at
theage of 15 and thenhad a number of jobs,including bank clerk. I
n 1896 he was accused of embezzlement.
7. He abscondedfromthe law to New Orleans and later fledto Hond
uras. When he learnedthat his wife was dying, he returnedto US
and surrenderedto police. Although there has been much
debate over his actual guilt, he was convicted of embezzling funds
fromthe bank that employedhim, he was sentenced to 5 yearsin
jail. In 1898 he was sent to the penitentiary in Columbus,
Ohio.
8. While in prisonhe beganwriting short stories in order to support his youn
g daughter Margaret. His first published storywas "Whistling Dick's
Christmas Stocking" (1899). He useda pseudonym, Olivier Henry, only
once and changed his pen name to O. Henry, not wanting his readers to
knowhe was in jail. He published 12 stories whilein prison. After serving
3 years of the five-year sentence, he was releasedfor good behavior. He mov
ed to New York City in 1902 and wrote a storya week for the New York
World, and also for other publishers. His first collectionof stories was
"Cabbages and Kings" (1904).

to her and startedthe conversation, whichendedwithher revealing thetruth
that she knewjohn was following her and she was glad that he didn't talked
withher and the next challenge to himwas to enter thegirl’s house which
was none other than the colonel’s mansion.

and by pretending that he wanted to sell those plate glasses
and hence wanted to meet colonel Allyn, the place was a dead
coffin and he with shaken legs, numb hands and crack voice
talkedto the colonel and aftersometime came to the point and
askedfor the girl’s hand and to his surprise the colonel gave a
n unexpected answer by agreeing.
