My confession: I used to be a journalist, I used to produce news and analysis. I’m not a journalist anymore
But last year’s elections in the UK and the US surprised me. How did it happen?
This is me in 1980 at the Moscow Olympics. I look older but when I was sixteen…….
I returned to Russia after the break up of the Soviet Union as a BBC journalist. These were interesting times and journalism was a heroic calling….I was covering one of the biggest stories of the 20th Century, the break-up of the Soviet Union led by the new Russian President. Over two years I traveled to all of the republics….
I started as a journalist at a time when mobile phones first appeared and the internet was first registered on the world wide web.
At the time few people understood that these two innovations would change the way we listened to and shared the news.
25 years ago people read the morning newspaper and listened to news bulletins. They would watch TV news in the evenings. The TV didn’t work in the mornings, it was regarded as antisocial. Somewhere in the mid 1990s I was told the news would go 24/7. I didn’t believe it. But within ten years the news cycle changed. Consumers wanted their news on-demand, with constant updates. The news was replaced with opinion since most stories don’t have new facts very often.
We are social animals and we communicate through our opinions. We feel naked without an opinion.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie divorce. That’s the news. That’s not enough, consumers demand more. Who is to blame? Who do you support. Angelina, UN ambassador for children. I support her. But then we’re told he had a tough childhood. He was beaten. Life if not easy for a film star and he smoked too much marijuana. But did you see the GQ article. He blames himself. We sympathize. By now most of the civilized world knows the story and all of them have an opinion.
In the UK we had our own divorce and there was a major issue in the European Union. Migration, a threat to our own way of life. A minority political party, which no longer functions, persuaded us to file for divorce. How did that happen?
Hold on, they’ve got the same headlines in the US? Trump demanding a wall to stop the Mexicans, a ban on muslims entering the country. Close the borders, America first. It turns out the same consultants have been working on both campaigns. They identified migration as the key issue in both countries for communities who saw standard of living fall, amplified the stories across traditional and social media, convincing voters to reject the party in power.
Trump strategy and success also seen in his media spend. Clinton had twice the budget of Trump and spent most on TV advertising. Trump spent most of his money on social media, targeting those who saw immigration as a major issue, and promising to protect them from dangerous foreigners.
UK and US elections dominated by Post-Truth and Fake News. Post truth is when people trust opinions from someone they trust over facts. Tony Blair was one of the most popular prime ministers since the 2nd world war and convinced the country to invade Iraq on his emotional belief and opinion that Saddam Hussein would use weapons of mass destruction. There was no evidence of weapons and 14 years after the war he is still criticised for deceiving the British public.
Fake news during the US elections was different. In fact much of this news was created by Macedonian teenagers looking for click-throughs to earn advertising commission on social media sites.
An equally shocking fake news story, from the same Macedonians.
Of course there is nothing new about fake news, Dog drives car is an old story and has sold newspapers all over the world.
While he may have been successful in manipulating public opinion before the election by working with social media platforms he has had a much harder time dealing with traditional media after the election. They are, it turns out, still very experienced in holding the President to account.
The latest phenomenon is the outing of fake news even by major news organizations. Even CNN has to admit it gets the story wrong sometimes
During the US elections Russia was one of the few countries Trump criticized. In the end this only damaged his promise to improve relations with President Putin.
His last meeting in Berlin suggests he remains committed to a new relationship.
