Completed the professional industry placement specializing in Neuroscience. Acquired and develop dissection and
presentation skills. Learnt to use a range of equipment such as vibratomes and fluorescence microscopes whilst
primarily working in immunohistochemistry (IHC) and also developed the knowledge to use the software to be able
to read and analyze the data I gathered.

Developing an in-depth understanding of biomedical science and its application in medicine, research and the
scientific industry. Ability to consider human disease at the molecular, cell and whole-body level, and learn how
diseases are diagnosed and treated in terms of biological tests.
In addition, I have a gained an insight into the functions of professional lab work, whilst developing a range of
laboratory skills ranging from pipetting to using the skills learnt in a wider commercial context completed in our end
of year project such as ELISA testing and PCR, and many more.

Extenuating Circumstances: I am currently on a learning contract for my mental health. In addition, I have
unfortunately had to undergo 4 different surgical procedures during my studies at university. This has greatly
impacted my abilities with study time.
I take regular care with my mental health and look forward to being able to dedicate more time to my studies as I
hope to never need another surgery again.
I can provide evidence of surgeries and learning contract if required.
I will be re-siting the Neurobiology coursework also.

Statement in support of Integrated MSci application:
Scientific research is one of the most vital jobs, as without it the current healthcare standard we
have would be impossible. That’s why I would relish the opportunity to become a part of it and
contribute to a greatly interesting and fulfilling research career. I am particularly interested in this
integrated MSci as it is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology and will provide the experience
needed to go on to work in research postgraduate.
At my placement at Leeds University, I gained an insight into how Masters work, and was able to
appreciate the level of dedication it takes as well as the range of scientific procedures (specific to
neuroscience and tissue). This has inspired my desire to further developing my research skills and
advancing my knowledge in this are topic. Following the successful completion of the integrated
MSci, my aim is to pursue a research related career Neuroscience studies and or a PhD to further my
knowledge in the field. My goal is to be working in Alzheimer’s (I have been following research about
a potential amyloid vaccine which sounds greatly promising) and/or other neurodegenerative
diseases.
Research area preference for integrated Masters project work:
My preferred research area would have to be Theme 1: Development and application of tissue
models to alleviate disease and infection. After successfully completing my placement at the
University of Leeds working with deceased mice, I am familiar with tissue protocol and have
developed exceptional dissection and presentation/mounting technique along with the other skills
that come with tissue practice, e.g. immunohistochemistry. A study that caught my interest
was on DNA methylation and the NMDA receptor in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of
female rats in respect to the effects of schizophrenia by Dr Caroline Dalton, et al (2022). The study
comprised of not just behavioral tests, but molecular through ELISA, gene sequencing and protein
expression analysis. The range of tests combine genetics topics of DNA analysis and previous
research (using PCP to substitute the effects of schizophrenia) to effectively evaluate and be the first
to propose the effects of DNA methylation on the NR1 and NR2 NMDAR subunits. A chance to work
alongside impactful studies such as these would cement my knowledge and experience in
Neuroscience and extend to me the opportunity to contribute to the groundbreaking research topic
as it continues to develop.

  • 3. Statement in support of Integrated MSci application: Scientific research is one of the most vital jobs, as without it the current healthcare standard we have would be impossible. That’s why I would relish the opportunity to become a part of it and contribute to a greatly interesting and fulfilling research career. I am particularly interested in this integrated MSci as it is accredited by the Royal Society of Biology and will provide the experience needed to go on to work in research postgraduate. At my placement at Leeds University, I gained an insight into how Masters work, and was able to appreciate the level of dedication it takes as well as the range of scientific procedures (specific to neuroscience and tissue). This has inspired my desire to further developing my research skills and advancing my knowledge in this are topic. Following the successful completion of the integrated MSci, my aim is to pursue a research related career Neuroscience studies and or a PhD to further my knowledge in the field. My goal is to be working in Alzheimer’s (I have been following research about a potential amyloid vaccine which sounds greatly promising) and/or other neurodegenerative diseases. Research area preference for integrated Masters project work: My preferred research area would have to be Theme 1: Development and application of tissue models to alleviate disease and infection. After successfully completing my placement at the University of Leeds working with deceased mice, I am familiar with tissue protocol and have developed exceptional dissection and presentation/mounting technique along with the other skills that come with tissue practice, e.g. immunohistochemistry. A study that caught my interest was on DNA methylation and the NMDA receptor in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus of female rats in respect to the effects of schizophrenia by Dr Caroline Dalton, et al (2022). The study comprised of not just behavioral tests, but molecular through ELISA, gene sequencing and protein expression analysis. The range of tests combine genetics topics of DNA analysis and previous research (using PCP to substitute the effects of schizophrenia) to effectively evaluate and be the first to propose the effects of DNA methylation on the NR1 and NR2 NMDAR subunits.
