Patricians <br />The father was the owner of his wife, children and slaves.<br />The father was the leader of the family.<br />The families were grouped into clans or “gens” which would have a common ancestor.<br />
Gladiators<br />Anybody can become a gladiator.<br />Prisoners could chose between slavery or to become a gladiator.<br />Gladiators get special training from special trainers for special fights.<br />
Plebeians (Plebs) <br />Plebeians were the people who worked for the patricians. <br />Plebeians lived in 3 or 4 story apartments with no bathrooms and poorly built houses.<br />The rooms were often crowded with two families in one room.<br />They use pots for toilets. The pot would be emptied out the window which made a terrible smell.<br />Some people can get denied from being a plebeian. <br />
Rules for a Slave<br />Some wealthy Pompeii people kept underground prisons for slaves that didn’t follow the rules.<br />Slaves were expected to cook, clean and keep the fires going for bath houses.<br />If a slave killed their master not just that slave would be killed but all the other slaves nearby would be as well.<br />If you were born and your mother was a slave you were also a slave. This is how the Romans kept large numbers of slaves.<br />
Slave Families <br />Wealthier families would have hundreds or dozens of slaves.<br />Less wealthy families would have up to 3 slaves. <br />Sometimes even the working class had their own slave.<br />Female slaves were the maids to the Mistress or housekeepers.<br />Slaves were not allowed to marry.<br />Masters with a lot of slaves would let slaves pair up.<br />
Clothing<br />The men wore woolen robes called togas over their tunics.<br />The women wore stolas which are pretty much like togas.<br />Tunics are their underclothes.<br />They had different types of cloaks for men and women.<br />They didn’t wear any underwear.<br />
Pompeian Perfumes<br />They made their perfumes from flowers and plants.<br />They also used olive oil in their perfumes.<br />They made their perfume bottles out of gold and glass.<br />
Make-Up<br />The makeup women wore was a paste spread all over the face to make it look white. <br />They also mixed the paste with red dye for blush or lipstick. <br />They tinted the paste with soot to darken their eyebrows.<br />
Jewellery<br />They used a brooch to hold their clothes together.<br />They used a fibula which is a large safety pin that was used to fasten their clothes.<br />They made their jewellery out of gold and jewels. <br />
Footwear and Hair Accessories<br />Women wore bone, wooden hairsticks or combs, which they used to comb their hair.<br />They wore leather sandals or leather boots in cold weather.<br />
Washing in Pompeii<br />Slaves used animal and human urine to clean their masters clothes.<br />The Romans washed their clothes in urine. <br />Slaves stomped on the urine and clothes to clean them.<br />
Wealthy Peoples Houses <br />If wealthy people lived in busy streets they would normally rent the two front rooms.<br />Wealthy families would have a large hole in the middle of the roof to collect rain water.<br />Beds in Ancient Rome were made out of wood. <br />
