Process/data flow charts
 Flow charts are used in designing and documenting complex processes.
They help visualize what is going on and thereby help to understand a
process, and perhaps also find flaws, bottlenecks, and other less-obvious
features within it.
 Objectives
 Getting a better overview about the timber supply chains in montain forests
 Exposing possible strenghts and risks of the SLOPE system
 Elements
 Supply chain processes (activities)
 Decisions within the supply chain
 Connection of activities and decisions (sequence)
 Visualisation of connections to forest data and data bases (information flow)

DATA FLOW SLOPE
Bottlenecks in timber supply chains
 Bottlenecks show efficiency gaps in the supply chain and they
identify processes and activities, which have to be improved
 Examples for bottlenecks from the INFRES project according to
Austrian participants (Innovative and effective technology and logistics for forest residual
biomass supply in the EU (311881) (Erber, Kanzian & Holzleitner, 2014))
 Cost‐ineffective transport
 Poor accessibility due to steep terrain
 Lack of landings and landing space
 Long transport distances
Technical Meeting
19-21 Jan 15
Bottlenecks in timber supply chains
 Possible bottlenecks in SLOPE
 Additional effort and time consumption for
 marking trees with RFID tags
 reading the RFID tags by carriage, processor and truck
 wood quality measurements by implemented sensors
 Post-processing for forest model data
 Survival rate and technical functionality during field operations
 Higher effort for set-up, calibration and maintenance of technical
devices
