23. History Eunice Kennedy Shriver began the concept of Special Olympics in 1963 as a day camp for people with intellectual disabilities to provide them with the therapeutic effects of physical fitness and sports. In 1968, she organized the first International Special Olympics Games, where 1,000 athletes from the United States, Canada and France competed. That year, Special Olympics was founded as a nonprofit organization.

1- First bullett and back to key messaging…this is important business, engaging, empowering and yes, fun ( back to the dky messaging slide on be a fan, also relates to the Board) SOI accredits the Board of Directors. 2-definition of governance: To govern is to steer, to control and to influence from a position of authority. Governance deals with the legitimate distribution of authority throughout a system – whether a country or an organization Leadership: Leadership is the capacity and will to rally men and women to a common purpose and the character which inspires confidence and trust.” What could be more important for the org. I say this to you, because you get it, you are leading: our goal is to build a Board that understands this importance: if you truly believe that SO is important business, and not just nice (as Tim says), then as the Board and as a Board Director, you will be engaged, and participate fully in this extraordinary organization. Let’s look at what being fully engaged means as a best proactice.
This is also about participation on a committee: it may be finance it may be a task force for the Breakfast of Champions, it may be Board building: critical work is done in committees, if you are not fully engaged and participation on a committee then how will you govern, set policy, ensure fiduciary responsibility, talk are of the mission…won’t happen… our Boards are not made up of 50 people, they are designed stategically and that is why every Board member must be fully engaged.
CEO’s are becoming more leaders rather than managers; Directors on a Board are becoming more managers, managing themselves.

Therefore, Fundraising is a partnership between staff and board
Talk about committee work and how pier de sol is a good example; what are the roles of each committee and it is not a function of staff Committees for southern California include: Deveopment, finance, program ( work with each division VP) bill sending this and by laws
