SRI • Has 5 principles: Grow young and single seedlings with low density; mechanical weed control (no herbicides); reduce pesticides; reduce water use, alternate wetting - drying; and use organic fertilizer • Known as a “simple” but “effective” technique that brings multiple economic, ecological, and social benefits • Also, known as a low carbon technique, an ecological approach for paddy rice cultivation to help small rice farmers to adapt to and be resilient to climate change

Map of SRI in Vietnam (Source: IAE)  A decade of SRI’s journey in Vietnam beginning in 2003  Recognized as a “new advanced technique” in 2007  2 million farmers applied SRI on a half million hectares in Vietnam  Recognized with “Vietnam Golden Panicle” Award  Support for women and rural development  Support for changing farmers’ perceptions and practices toward environmental protection  Reduces GHGs and helps farmers increase resilience to climate change SRI I Vietnam

Vietnam SRI network (SRIViet) • Start: 2015 with multiple stakeholders • Purpose: A foundation to bring those interested in SRI and sustainable rice production (both organizations/individuals) together to share information and research, to cooperate on improving rice production, to support the voices of rice producers, and to advocate for policies that will benefit the farmers in adopting more sustainable rice production methods.

Vietnam SRI network (SRIViet) • Founders: Oxfam, SNV, ICC-TNU, FCRI, CASRAD, IAE, Veco, FIDR, PPDs, SRD • Has multiple stakeholders • SRIViet is linked with, and will be an active member of, the Global SRI Community • SRIViet offers to lead regional exchanges, dialogue and collaboration of national SRI networks in ASEAN and throughout the world.

Activities of SRIViet • Start-up meeting of SRIViet founders • Set up regulations and support commitments • Develop SRIViet coordination • Development of website of SRIViet: https://srivietnam.wordpress.com • Link with the Global SRI Community • Publication of SRI research articles and extension materials • Set up information sharing mechanism • Work on development of trademark for SRI products • Policy advocacy to support SRI
  8. 8. Activities of SRIViet • Organize series of specific seminars/workshop on: – SRI with climate change adaptation – SRI with new agriculture / rural development ideas – Approach for SRI extension – SRI with community health and gender equity – SRI principles applied to other crops • …
