VINEYARD / LABORERS
INTRODUCTION
The Bible contains many references to vineyards
and the work of laborers in cultivating and
harvesting grapes. In the Old Testament,
vineyards were considered a valuable asset and
a sign of prosperity, with many of the patriarchs
owning vineyards and using them to produce
wine.
In the New Testament, Jesus often used
vineyards and grape growing as metaphors for
spiritual growth and the importance of bearing
good fruit. He spoke of the need for laborers to
work in the vineyard and the importance of
cultivating a fruitful life.
Jesus tells the parable of the workers in the
vineyard to further explain what the Kingdom of
God is like. A landowner goes out early in the
morning and hires men, agreeing to pay them the
daily rate - a silver coin for a day’s work. He hires
them at various times throughout the day - 9am,
12pm, 3pm and 5pm and promises all of the
workers a fair wage.
The Navigators define a labourer as:
“Ordinary people who are growing in
their intimacy with Jesus and who are
working in the harvest (living and
discipling among the lost) with a
generational mindset.”
The parable has often been interpreted
to mean that even those who are
converted late in life earn equal rewards
along with those converted early, and
also that people who convert early in life
need not feel jealous of those later
converts.
Bible Gateway Matthew 20 :1-16. "For
the kingdom of heaven is like a
landowner who went out early in the
morning to hire men to work in his
vineyard. He agreed to pay them a
denarius for the day and sent them into
his vineyard. "About the third hour he
went out and saw others standing in the
marketplace doing nothing.
The parable of the vineyard
workers (Matthew 20: 1–16)
Summary
SUMMARY 1 SUMMARY 2 SUMMARY 3 SUMMARY 4
The parable has
often been
interpreted to
mean that even
those who are
converted late in
life earn equal
rewards along with
those converted early,
and also that people
who convert early in
life need not feel
jealous of those later
converts.,
Jesus says that any
“laborer” who
accepts the invitation
to the work in the
vineyard (said by
Jesus to represent
the Kingdom of
Heaven).
This parable stresses “God’s
unmerited grace,” as
opposed to “earning God’s
favor.” To fully appreciate the
essence of this salvation-
specific parable, let’s put a
few things into perspective
before we review the text.
PICTURES
Do You Know God’s
Hidden Intention in the
Parable of the Workers in
the Vineyard?
The Parable of the Workers in
the Vineyard (also called the
Parable of the Laborers in the
Vineyard or the Parable of
the Generous Employer) is a
parable of Jesus which
appears in chapter 20 of the
Gospel of Matthew in the
New Testament.
The parable of the workers in the
vineyard is about several workers
who are hired by a man who
owns a vineyard, over different
periods of time.
At the end of the day the people
who are hired first expect to be
paid more than those hired later.
But, the man pays all of the
workers equally.
“Imaginary gardens with real
toads in them.” That’s how
one writer has described the
parables of Jesus. They are
imaginative stories, but they
relate to real life. They are
imaginary gardens, but they
have real toads in them.
Often those toads are us.
CONCLUSION
The parable has often been interpreted to mean that even those who are converted
late in life earn equal rewards along with those converted early, and also that people
who convert early in life need not feel jealous of those later converts.
The lesson of this parable is that God rewards us based upon the opportunities that He
gives us. The later workers would have been willing to go to work earlier, but they were
not given the opportunity by the employer. Had you been given a lot of money, you
may have been willing to give a lot of money away to the poor.
People who come to Christianity later in their lives will still be given the same reward (entry into
the Kingdom of Heaven) as those who have been faithful all their lives.
The grumbling workers have not been treated unfairly. Their emotional turmoil is because
of expectations based in their envy, not injustice. In the parable, Jesus reminds them that
all that they have is from God, that all their blessings are from God's generosity, not their
own doing.
