   Use of Social Media is almost unavoidable.
   Number of people using social media sites is
    growing exponentially.
   73% of teens 12-17 are using Facebook.
   Is this good or bad?
   Facebook brings about well being, at the
    same time undermines it.
   Allows young adults discover new ways of
    communication and connecting with one
    another.
   Meet new friends and explore new interests.
   Not necessarily meeting new people, they are
    enriching current friendships.
   However limits valuable learning experiences
    and limits social life, away from the internet.
   Bullying, cliques etc. are just as prevalent
    online as they are offline.
   Social Media makes this more readily
    available.
   “Facebook Depression” results from heavy
    use of social media, an individual displays
    signs of depression due to the intensity of
    the online world.
   Social Media can make children feel
    inadequate due friend tallies, statuses, and
    pictures of people having a good time.
   Well Adjusted Kids tend to filter what they
    post, and only show positive aspects, and
    qualities of themselves.
   Resulting in positive comments from friends,
    when less-well adjusted read these positive
    comments, they end up feeling worse.
   Can also occur in adults in the same manner.
   Most of the older generation does not
    understand the online world, but supervision is
    very important.
   Checking in regularly with children is important,
    but can be counterproductive.
   Frequent monitoring can drive a child away
    ◦ Important to build relationship early with child regarding
      social media.
   Adults who may be suffering from this don’t have
    parents to monitor this phenomenon
    ◦ Close friends should examine one another to see if
      someone close to them may be experiencing this.
   Businesses thrive on the use of social media
    platforms.
   With these platforms under so much scrutiny
    in the news they should be worried about
    what happens next to these social media
    platforms.
   One form of action would be to raise
    awareness, and show their concern on this
    issue to the social media community.
