Mise-En-Scene
Analyse
We start the scene withaslight pantothe right thisisa mid-shot of a character, they
use a mid-shot so the audience cansee what attire he iswearing sothat they canmake
an assumptionabout him, he is wearing atrenchcoat anda scarf whichcouldportray
that he Is a middle classcitizen, there isnon-diegetic soundinthe background it isan
eerie soundwhichisrelatively fast paced, there isalow-key lighting where the only light
source isthe window
It then hasa quick cutsbacks tothe character whoseemsasthey are analysing the scene thiscouldleadthe
audience tobelieve that he isthe protagonist. The cameradiagonally tiltsdown tosee the protagonist’shands
touchthe wall. The non-diegetic backgroundsound startstoincrease involume.
It thenquickly cutstoa flash back close up of an unknowncharactershandsdrag against the wall, they useda
close up so we cansee indetail what ishappening, the non-diegetic soundincreasesandthe tone changesto a
more dramatic sound, faintly you canhear the diegetic soundofthe hands scratching against the wall which
thenfades out of focus, there ismore low key lighting whichaddstothe suspense of the scene
It thencutstoa another scene ofan elderly lady being draggedupaflight of stairs, the scene startswithafast
tilt of the cameraandthenit turnsintoaslow motion, they usedthisto convey that it isa flash back, there is
diegetic soundofthe lady screaming for help, there isalsothe non-diegetic backgroundsoundplaying alongside,
her facial expressionisconveying fear and distraught making the audience questionwhat ishappening toher.
There isthenashot reverse shot of whenthe protagonist isanalysing the scene, most of it is inslow motionthis
is how the audience canknow that thisis a flash back and not in real time, the low key lighting isstaying
consistent throughout toaddtothe emotionsthat the character isfeeling, there isstill alow non-diegetic
backgroundsound.
It thencutstoanother close upof the protagonistsface, the camerathenslowly zoomsintohisface thisis to
demonstrate hisexpressiontowardswhat hashappened, hisfacial expression portraysthat he isdeterminedto
confront the people that didthis,he also shows anger and hatredtowardsthe people whohurt that victim.
The next shot that we see isina different location, the camera tracksthe people inthe centre tothe left theuse
of the tracking shot is for an establishing shot so the audience can understandwhere we are.The lighting Isnot
highkey and not low key,the room look relatively expensivemeaning thatthe people that ownit are ofamiddle
or higher class thanothers,+there isdecorationsfor examplepaintingsandsculpture inthe backwhichcould
meanthe owner ofthat room iswealthy, there isadiegetic noise whichisunclear inthisshot, there is2 men
dressedformally and one is holding a gun tothe elderly ladieshead whichdemonstratesthat he hassome sort
of power that he canthreatenothers,
Thenthere isafast cut to a mid-shot of the elderly lady sitting inachair, there only
sound that you can hear isthe diegetic soundofher talking she says the name:
‘Sherlock’whichconveysthat the mainprotagonist iscalledSherlock ,you cansee
that she is in fear from the people aroundher, the elderly lady iswearing ascarf
whichisnormally wornby people ofa middle or higher class, she is also wearing
ear ringswhichcanreinforce the statement about her higher class,
We thencut tomidshot left panof Sherlock, there isdiegetic soundofhim
talking, and he thenidentifiesthe elderly lady as‘MrsHudson’, the lighting ishigh
key as we canclearly see him
We thenquickly cut toanover the shoulder mid shot of the protagonist talking to
what we assume to be the antagonist. The lighting ishighkey and you can hear
the diegetic soundofthe protagonist talking, the use ofhis talking conveysthat
he is intelligent.
There isthenacut toa midtolong master shot where all ofthe charactersof
relevance are inthe scene,in thisshot we canfully see the antagonist, andthey
are wearing afully blacksuit whichcanconvey that they are middle tohigher
class, by the Englishaccentswe assume that thisisset inEnglandhowever tobe
inpossession of a pistol in the UK isillegal thisreinforcesthat thischaracter isthe
antagonist as they have done illegal activities. Thisshot is the longest sofar as it
lasts 5 seconds, there ismore diegetic soundofthe charactershave a
conversation
Thenthere isaclose up of the protagonistshandsidentifying any harm whichcouldhave beenmade tothe
victim the lighting islow key,but there isstill enough lighting sothat everything isvisible, thereisonly diegetic
audio whichisMrsHudson crying. It thencutsbackto the main protagonist’sface
thisis so that we can see hisreaction.
There isthenanother zoomedclose upofthe victimsinjuries, inpost the editors
have decidestomake it a jaggedzoom, this is tofocus the audience attentionto
that specific area, there isa distorted non-diegetic soundwhenthe camerazooms
in, that shot thenpans tothe left and zoom intoan extreme close up ofthe
antagonist ring withbloodon it,conveying that some sort of violence hastaken
place
It thencutstoa close up point of view shot of the protagonist looking at the antagonist, the lighting ishighkey
on the right ofhisface and low key on the left of his face, and the only sound that you can hear is the non-
diegetic backgroundsound.
We thencut toamid-shot of Sherlockwhere he isstanding upstraight withhishandsbehindhis back, this
conveysthat he is confident of what isgoing tohappen thiscould leadtothe audience making anassumption
that he is skilledand confident inhisown abilities, there isnon-diegetic soundofabackgroundtune anddiegetic
sound of the protagonist talking,
It thencutstoa master long shot at a different angle where all ofthe charactersare inplay, the lighting islow
key there isa non-diegetic backgroundsound anddiegetic soundofSherlocktalking andMrsHudson crying
1:53. We thencut toalong shot of the antagonist frisking the protagonist, inthisscene Sherlock isallowing
himselftobe checkedfor any weapons, thisfurther reinforcesmy statement about him having confidenceinhis
abilities, thisgivesthe impressionthat tothe audience that he hasnothing tohide, the lighting islow key and
there isonly diegetic soundpresent ofthe clothesbeing movedaround
It thencutstoa close up panto the right, where the protagonist attacksthe antagonist thisshowsthe audience
that Sherlockcanbe violent ifneeded,it also shows he isintelligence ashe usesa spray to confuse the
antagonist and thenhitshim withhisownhead, portraying that he has a violent side, the lighting islow key and
there isdiegetic soundofthe spray and the headhitting eachother
It thencutstoa wide angle shot of a new locationthere isacar arriving, the wide shot focusesonthe opening of
the door of the car tomake the audience focuson the character leaving the car, there isnon-diegetic
backgroundtune andfaintly you hear the diegetic soundofthe cars, the lighting ishighkey, that shot thenpans
tothe left and we see the character leave the car andreadanote ona door
That thencutstoa close up of a note onthe door, there is non-diegetic backgroundsoundandthe lighting is
highkey so that we canreadwhat is onthe note.
