PREFACE
Welcome. You are journeying to a different place, a different dimension and a
different universe. One that you shall never be able to delete from your
consciousness. Indeed, if you were not specifically invited take this trip, your mind
may implode during the journey. Are you still there? Yes? Good. Then let me tell you
something.
I am you. And you are I. We are one and the same, and we coexist in a universe called
the Angel's Gate. This universe is nearly identical to the one you (not I, although
we are the same) originated from. Only one thing has changed. Can you guess? Yes. It
is I (and you, although it is mostly I, even though we are the same). In becoming one
with me, you have acquired a great power. It is not the power to heal hearts, for
everyone possesses this power to varying degrees. Some choose not to exercise this
power, or abandon it completely. What curious creatures we are. No, that is not what
you have gained. In contrast, you have acquired the power...to break hearts.
For the sake of your sanity, from here on and thereafter I shall refer to us in the
third person. Or else I would have to disrupt the time and space continuum every
other sentence to explain why something that we did is really more I, and not you, or
more you, and not I, even though we are essentially the same. The difference may only
be distinguishable by me (not you), and may only serve to wring your brain into an
even more painful configuration than it already is in.

Seri walkedpastone of the practice studiosand
immediatelybacktrackedtoaverybizarre sight.
She knockedonthe door and peeredincautiously.
There wasonlyone personoccupyingthe studio,
but that wasn'tthe mainfocus.What had caught herattentionwas
the humongouspile of tatteredclothingsittinginnocentlyinthe
middle of the studio.Theirsupposedownerwaschugginga bottle of
waterin the corner."Oppa!What the heck are you doing?"
Hoya crumpledthe bottle anddiscarded ittoone side,noddingtowardsthe pile of clothesasif it
explainedeverything."Ihave asolodance stage at the SMTOWN concertnextweek."
Seri nudgedthe pile withthe tipof hershoe.Atfirstglance,itseemedlike apitiful piece of blackfabric
torn here,hole there.Butthenshe realizedthatitwasin fact a tank toprippeddownthe front."Are you
practicing...howtoripyourshirtoff on stage??"
He regardedherwitha slightlyrebelliousgrin."Gota problemwiththat?"
Seri crossedherarms and leanedagainstthe wall,amused."Yeah,Iguessyouwouldbe the one to

arrow.

back to practicingthe art of tank

Seri rushedthroughthe doorsof SMEntertainment,discardingherwetanddrippingumbrellaand
changinghershoes.Flashingherpassat the frontdesk,she speedilywoundherwaythroughthe maze
of hallwaysandreachedherdance studiowithlessthanaminute tospare.Hopefully,herdance trainer
wouldn'tmind.Itwaspouringoutside andthe trafficwasterrible,makingthe journeyfromthe dormsto
the companya veryunpleasantchore.
"Annyeongha-"Seri beganasshe entered,butstoppedasshe
realizedthatshe wasgreetinganemptystudio."Where..."

She quicklyanswered."Yeoboseyo?"
"Seri?Your dance trainerwon'tmake it today.Anaccident
happenednearhisplace andthe traffichas stopped."

comingup andhe wassupposedtohelpme prepare!"
"I knowyouneedto learnthe choreographysince we changedit
lastminute,soI arrangeda replacementforthe day.He shouldbe
arrivingsoon."

Andas if right on cue,someone enteredthe studio,hiswethair
plasteredtohishead.He shookhishead,sprayingwaterdroplets
inall directions.Runninghisfingersthroughhisplatinumblond
hair,he lookedupwithaslightlyirritatedgaze.
It lookedlike somethingrightoutof a commercial.
Seri'seyeswidened, alittle surprisedbyhisappearance (butnotin
a bad way...)."K-Kai oppa,"she stammered."Gwenchanayo?"
Kai lookedupand sawSeri,and hisexpressionbrightened."Oh,heySeri!You're alreadyhere?The
trafficfromthe dormwas reallybad.Toobad the sajang-nimdidn'ttell me earlierorI wouldhave g-"He
cut himself off ashe realizedthathe wascreatinga puddle onthe studiofloor.He removedhisdripping
coat, but hiswhite t-shirtwassoakedthroughaswell.Itmoldedtohisbody,slightlytranslucent;the
thinlayerof cotton wasn'tenoughto hide hiswell-tonedabs.

Kai glanceddownat himself andrealized hiswardrobe malfunction."Whoops…"

It was pastmidnightwhenshe finishedherpractice.Gatheringherbelongings,she signedoutandwent
to retrieve herumbrella.She wasdismayedtofindthatitwas still raining,evenharderthanthe
morning.Howwas she supposedtowalkhome?
Someone tappedheronthe shoulderandshe started,turningaroundwithherbackpressedtothe
window.Kai'sface wasdangerouslyclose tohers;she couldfeel hisbreathonherskinuntil he tooka
pace back."Needa ride?"
"Um...yeah."
"I'll take you home."Withoutwaitingfora response,he grabbedherarmand ledheroutthe door.Seri
struggledtoopenherumbrella,butthe mechanismshad rustedandrefusedtomove.Obviousfromthe
episode thismorning,Kai didn't have anotherumbrella.Watchingherbattle withthe umbrella,he took
it fromherand triedto openit,but itdidn'topenfor himeither."Waithere.I'll bringthe carover."
"Oppa,wait-"Before Seri couldstophim, he flickedthe hoodof hisjacketupandran intothe rain.She
frowned.Like hisjacketwasgoingtodo himany good.
He pulledthe carup to hermomentsafter,andas she predicted,he lookedlike awetdogbehindthe
wheel.
"You're goingto catch a cold,"Seri saidwithconcernas he pulledoutof the SM building.
He shother a sidewayssmile."Don'tworryaboutme."Butas theydrove closerto Seri'sdorm, the rain
became muchheavier,anditwas gettinghardertosee the road. Seri noticedKai intensely
concentratingondriving,the lightsreflectingfromthe waterdropletsinhishair,andshe knew the road
conditionswere worsening.TheypulleduptoSeri'sdormsafely,butthe weatherdidn'tshow signsof
improvinganytime soon.
"Oppa,"Seri saidas she undidherseatbelt."Do youwantwait outthe raininmy dorm? It'sdangerous
to drive inthese conditions."
Kai peeredoutthe window,grippingthe steeringwheel.Seri knew he washesitantandwantedtoget
home before itgotany later,soshe continued,"It'snotworth risking anaccidentto gethome earlier."
"Okay,"he relented,andparkedthe car.Seri wasgoingto openthe door, buthe grabbedherhand.

Seri triedto refuse it."No,you'll justgetmore wet."
Kai ignoredher,arrangingthe sleevesbelow herchin.
"Justdo as I say. Do youknowhowmany girlswould
kill tobe you rightnow?"
Withoutgivinghera chance to protest,he gave her a
sexygrinand exitedthe car,joggingthroughthe rainto the dormentrance.
Seri had nochoice but to follow.
Once inside, Seri openedthe closetandpulledoutacleanwhite towel.
Throwingitat Kai,she pointedtowardsthe washroom."You'll getacold if
youkeepwearingthose clothes,sotake ashowerfirst.Putyourclothes
overthe ventand they'll dryup."
Seri waschangingintoa freshsetof clothesas she heardthe showerturn
on.Shiveringslightly,she headedtothe kitchenandrummagedaroundin
herstash of food,until she extractedsome instantramyeonandhelditupvictoriously.Alternatively,
theycouldgettake-out...She headedovertothe washroomto findoutwhatKai wanted.
"Oppa!"she yelledoverthe soundof cascadingwater."Whatdo youwant toeat? Is ramyeonokay?"
"Yeah!"he yelledback.
Seri dumpedthe driedramyeoninapot of boilingwaterandtookout twobowlsfromthe cupboard.
She made the soup base next,addinginaslice of cheese andsome driedkimchi.Finally,she transferred
the hot noodlesintothe bowls."Oppaaa!Ramyeon'sready!"
She broughtthe bowlsto the table,andhearinghisfootsteps,she rushedtosetthe table. Returning
withtwopairs of chopsticks,she froze nearthe kitchenentrance atthe sightof Kai.
"What's wrong?"he asked."Whyare youstaring at me?"
