Our group created a 2-minute psychological thriller media product. We researched codes and conventions of the thriller genre including elements of suspense, tension, and excitement. Our product featured conventions such as low lighting, claustrophobic locations, and jump cuts. Through the process, we learned new filming, editing, and sound design skills. Audience feedback indicated that the product was confusing yet effective at building tension as intended for the psychological thriller genre.

2. Introduction
A Thriller genre is defined as a genre consisting
elements of suspension, tension and excitement to
build a climax atmosphere
Our group was assigned to construct a media product
that consists of codes and conventions from the
media genre for a maximum of 2 minutes.
During the project it consisted of the following:
Research- Analysis of existing media products,
codes and conventions, target audience
Planning- Storyboards, shot list, costumes,
locations, script, Dates and times, props, equipment
Media product
And
Audience feedback, evaluation
3. Codes and conventions
Our media product has used conventions from the thriller
genre of the following:
Element of darkness/Low lighting- Noir
Claustrophobic locations- College/Corridor
Obtrusive editing- montage, jump cuts, sound bridge
Photographs/Stairs- To create tension
Two or more characters psychological preying each
other’s mental ability- protagonist/antagonist
Flashbacks- montage scene from the photograph
Contrast of black and white for colour representation
conventions
Variety of tracking, close ups, medium shots, POV
Soundtrack is slow and builds up suspense
Conventions researched from

4. “Face Off” was our biggest inspiration because it contained mostly
useful and different mise-en-scene techniques which our group found
both interesting and different. Some techniques that we applied were:
•Dreamscape colour filter- making the environment link to memories and
create confusion for the audience
•Colour representation- the white horse used to represent innocence but
however blood on the horse represented death
•Use of slow motion to enthuses the death of the protagonist
•Contrast between protagonist/antagonist
•Soundtrack of the carousel creating suspense and tension for the
audience
•Diegetic Childs laughter which linked to the relationship between father
and son
The carousel scene
consists of

environment was one of
making it perfect our main
for the developed
psychological conventions
thriller sub genre
5. However our media product has challenged some
conventions of the thriller genre but the main convention is
including more horror aspects which can affect the
narrative of the media product. Horror films show
supernatural, explicit gore, use of nightmares and haunted
locations.
Our media product has shown more horrific aspects through
out the following scenes:
g Burning montage- Fairground from the film Terminator 2/
photograph
Death scene with the use of his characteristics and explicit
gore
Antagonist representing as nightmare, protagonist
responds to him through fear and horror
t Diegetic heartbeat building up nightmares
6. Throughout the conventions used for the media product
our group had decided that our media product was to
be classified as a psychological thriller sub genre and
some aspects of the action sub genre as well.
The antagonist has

7. Also another thriller media product that has inspired us is “The Dark
Knight” although its similar to “Face off” as an action thriller our
group was more interested in the mise en scene. Some
conventions used in the media product were very useful such as:
White Clown masks- used to convey and hide the identity which
created a false impression of innocence
Sophisticated Clothing- Links to their representation of masculinity
making the antagonist seem stronger and masculine
Composition of shots- during our ideas we were thinking for our
media product to include similar shots such as the following clip
from 1.22-1.29 a close up of the mask (

8. Social groups
Gender
Our actors are represented as stereotypical men , as the males are represented
as strong, athletic and social important compared to women e.g. Smoking
because our research for our target audience has shown most expect the
antagonist to be 25-40 yrs old. No women are used because our group
though males would be more interesting
Age
The age group in our opening sequence are represented as adults around 25-40
yrs old. This is represented by the two male actors and the research expect
a psychological to relate to 15 or over ratings.
Class
Our actors in our thriller are represented as middle/ working class through out
the use of clothing from hoodies, jeans and t shirt which creates realism.
This also links to sociology that its proven that working class does commit
most crimes.
Stereotypes
The antagonist is represented as a stereotypical stalker whereas the protagonist
is represented as a typical victim with scared characteristics.
Nationality
Our characters are represented as British because most people during the
questionnaire have mostly mentioned the filming location to be in the USA.
But however due to travelling, our group has decided to choose the UK and
England in order to make it simplistic and affordable.
9. Media Institutions
Our media product would be distributed by a major
Hollywood studio such as Paramount pictures or Warner
Brothers similar to other thrillers such as Face off and the
Dark knight for global distribution.
Our media product would be mass produced and globally
distributed for multimedia from both cinema and DVD- linked
to the audience feedback
Our media product is made in the UK so therefore our
media product can be funded from the UK film council. Also
it can be distributed into locally as a TV movie on TV
programmes such as Film 4 which shows a lot of British
films.
Our media product is rated 15 or over due to explicit gore
and use of horrific images which may be restricted for
younger audiences
10. Our media product would be successful because other psychological
thrillers such as “Inception” was also distributed by Warner brothers similar
to the “Dark knight”. By researching reviews most critics thought “Inception”
had contained individual twists and turns that are exciting to discover as
their cumulative visceral, intellectual and emotional impacts.
Therefore “Inception” does contain allot of dreamscape and supernatural
elements similar to our media product. Therefore our media product can
have similar distribution and reviews as Inception. But however Inception’s
mise en scene is more highly developed compared to our film so therefore
in order to receive the same reputation our group must considered
developing the technologies and mise en scene in order to gain high
potential. And also our group has used the main soundtrack in order to
alter and create a mixed soundtrack.
11. Audience of our media
product
Our target audience
15+
Males and females
Males and Females that are particular teenagers or adults that are 18+
in hard working social employment
People that particularly enjoy psychological thrillers that create
mystery and suspense for them and that go to the cinema monthly
Other films that are similar to ours with similar audiences
Face off- their media product had acclaimed both audiences and
critics. The film included lots of dreamscape elements and dramatic
surprises for the audience, which is similar to our target audience for
psychological aspects.
The Dark Knight- They had a broad range of audiences making
themselves very popular and successful. The opening sequence
covers allot of mise en scene of the composition of camera shots and
clothing making the audience feel confused and scared of the
narrative.
12. •BBFC (British Board of Film classification)
By researching on the BBFC website
http://www.bbfc.co.uk/ our group has
discovered that the 15 age certificate contains
the following:
•Strong and painful violence that images as sadistic or gory
•Easily accessible weapons aren’t glamorised
•Horror contains threat and menacing images unless sadistic
•Dangerous behaviour should not effect detail which could be copied
•Drugs- not to be used to promote or encourage younger audiences for miss
use
•Language- there may be frequent use of strong language , stronger terms
may be acceptable, aggressive use of language acceptable.
•Theme- no theme is prohibited provided treatment is appropriate for 15 year
olds
Therefore our media product has shown loads of characteristics for 15 age
certificate making it more easier to aim for 15 or over audience members.
13. Attracting/addressing the
audience
•Our audience profile is 15- 40 yrs old because our group felt that most of the
scenes were too horrific and confusing for younger audiences.
•Our media product has attracted most of the target audience through the use of
the climatic narrative through the staring scene it progressiongly builds tension
and psychological atmosphere allowing the audience to feel very concerned of
the protagonist
•Our media product has included lots of conventions that the audience has
thought about in our questionnaire such as including 15 rated content , set in
urbanised location but our group has chosen isolated as well in order to create
change in emotions and makes it more mysterious.
•Our media products has also included using the present time period and for our
gender in both the protagonist/antagonist both are male.
•For our colour representation most of the audience believe that black clothing
does associate the antagonist to become present with evil
14. •Mise en scene
•Through the use of camerawork from basic shots to more complex shots
such as side angles our target audience has shown different emotions and
interpretations making the narrative very complex and confusing. Most
camera angles are related to the “Dark Knight” so therefore our media
product would gain similar meaning and atmospheric moments. However
during our first ideas in story boards our group had changed camera
angles/shots in order to make it more psychological and mysterious for our
target audience.
•The characters in our media product are young males which relates to
the questionnaire, this establishes connections between the media
product and the audience because our audience are young and teenagers. Our
characters played by Luke Parker and James Mellor would show realism and act
like ordinary people. Also people found that our soundtrack was very depressing
and weird. A screen shot to show
our group has
changed ideas that
originally it was a close
up of the hand that
flicks the cigarette
instead our group has
used an over the
15. Our group had decided to publish our media
product onto a facebook page in order to
show more feedback from our target
audience: This shows that loads of audience
members particularly love the film. And it
shows great interest showing that our
media product is very interesting and
climatic.
These comments show both dramatic and
psychological aspects showing that some
audience members are confused and
some believe the film is more horrific.
Our group has felt that the horror aspect
has effected our sub genre. It also
attracted older audiences such as the
couple which widens our target audience
range.
During our audience feedback most of the comments have been said that the media product
was very confusing which links to the sub genre of our media product. Most audience
members thought the use of montage and jump cuts made the media product very effective
and emotional. And finally most people also thought that most believe it was a psychological
thriller.
16. Technologies learnt
During the preliminary task I had little knowledge of technologies but
during the main task I have learnt so much different media such as:
Different camera shots/ angles- by using new camera angles/ shots,
my ability for the hand held camera has improved since the
preliminary tasks
Editing software- During the main task I have learned to use imovie
by experimenting different filters and montages for example during
the photograph scene our group has edited scenes in order to build
a montage showing that our skills are developing. Our group has
also improved our knowledge for colour representation and cross
cutting editing. And included special effects such as slow motion and
cross dissolve in order to build up interesting composition.
Garage band- By using current songs/ soundtrack our group has
edited with the use of garage band in order to create sound bridges
and synchronous sounds to make a soundtrack that would appeal to
the audience. I have learnt, with the use of garage band, how to
alter the pitch, tempo and form of the soundtrack.
17. Camera Strengths and weakness
Strengths
3. The camera was easy and simple to use it for our media product
4. During our filming we have used different angles for the camera such as low/
high angles by using either a tri pod or hand held strap showing that our depth
of field has improved
5. It was easily connected to the imacs in the college allowing us to import/export
footage more faster
6. The camera was small and hand held with a hand strap allowing us to use
POV shots and tracking shots with high mobility
Weaknesses
W The camera was less advanced showing that it made some scenes didn't
show the characters due too being too dark, because the camera didn't focus
much even with the torch.
h The camera was hard to focus on particular objects or characters due to the
lack of concentration of the shot.
a The camera size enabled us to record some of the complex shots such as the
character turning 180 due to the lack on technology and accessories for the
hand held camera
18. •Soundtrack/ sounds
During our editing our group had used different soundtracks from copyright free
sources from YouTube such as:
Dead space trailer soundtrack
Inception soundtrack
Untitled 7 by Signor Ross
Welcome to limbo
After searching for soundtracks we have altered and edited them in order to blend
it with the footage so we can create great composition and form.
Our group has also researched on the imacs for diegetic sounds in order to make
the scenes more realistic. Our group has managed to find a copyright free
website and our group has included the following diegetic sounds:
Heart beat
Door
Footsteps
Electrifying sounds
Screeching sounds
19. •Unreliability's during the main task
During our filming our group did had problems during filming that
during some scenes were too complex due to being the camera out
of focus and too much movement. So our group had decided to
change the scenes from the storyboard in order to make it less
complicated and effective. For example the ending scene with the
blood on the hand had shown too much movement which has made it
very unstable and too dark.
Also our group had problems with the light and darkness that during
our planning our group have had to decided so much in order to film
on a low light date for the opening scene.
However during our filming and editing, our group had decided that
our ideas have expanded that has cause us to go over the brief of 2
minutes eventually adding 3 minutes in total. Our group has felt that
we shouldn't interfere with the footage because we believed that with
our skills and knowledge our film had built great tension and
suspense which would receive high potential for the target audience.
20. Preliminary Task
Since our preliminary task I have learnt to follow acquired and briefed
shots in order to build and create an opening sequence that would
shows the following specific shots:
Shot/reverse shot
Match on action
180 degree rule
The preliminary task therefore has helped me to gain more confidence
and improved knowledge of the camera and different composition of
shots. This has also helped me to understand technologies and to
become more confident.
The preliminary task has also helped me to plan more detail and factual
observations in order to plan out a detailed and scene with different
meanings. After filming I have learnt basic editing techniques about
montage and jump cuts which has given me basic skills in order to
start the main task with my group.
21. Planning
After the preliminary task the main task has helped me to develop my
skills even further and to acquire new techniques in order to extend
my knowledge. I have learnt from the following during the main task:
Research- our group has learned lots of new analysing techniques
such as narrative and mise en scene in order to analyse current
media products. This has helped us to identify and acquire the
conventions from the genre so our group can considered using
similar techniques.
Locations- our group has expanded our ideas by considering bigger
and wider areas that allow better variety
Storyboards – during the main task our group has learned to combine
and discuss ideas so we can acquire structure and show teamwork
also dedication
Clothing/ Props- this has helped us how to show the roles of the
characters through the use of colours representation
Shot list- our knowledge for different type of shots and time
management has increased allowing us to consider which shots are
the most effective for particular scenes
22. Filming/ Editing
Our group during our main task have developed our filming skills
and techniques, it’s also development our time management
and developing ideas. During filming I have also learned how to
control and have learned how to use the equipment more
effectively since the preliminary task. Also during our editing our
group’s knowledge for new technologies has been enhanced
since the preliminary task. By learning new editing techniques
this has enhanced our media product to become a
psychological thriller such as using colour filers and sound
bridges. And our group has learned to be more expressive and
learnt to become more enthusiastic and considering new ideas
and developments in order to prevent any problems from
affecting the preliminary task.
23. Conclusion
Overall I believe that our media product did succeed in
fulfilling the task. But however although our planning and
research has been helping us to develop lots of ideas and
forms, I feel that the media product does include more
horror aspects which can affect the main narrative and
sub genre of the media product giving people the wrong
impression for our media product.
Notes de l'éditeur
I will discuss all of these topics in my evaluation in order to understand my development over the preliminary task, referring to the choices and outcomes that our group has made and understand the main issues around audience, institution, technology, representation, forms and conventions in relation to production.
For our foundation portfolio task, we have been instructed to construct a media product relating to the thriller genre. From our genre research our group have discovered that a thriller genre is defined as a genre of film/ literature that uses suspense, tension and excitement for the main elements. A thriller genre has many sub genres such as psychological, religious, conspiracy and mystery . For our opening sequence we wanted to include a suspense and emotional narrative structure making the audience encouraged to watch the media product, it will also lead to other depths of fields allowing us to consider what the film could develop. Before the media product was planned our group considered closely about the target audience and codes and conventions to include for our media product in order to build development and response. During our questionnaire results our group had discovered that our target audience consists of mixture of male and female aimed for 15 or over. This age rating shows that most teenagers aged 15 or over would gradually observe our thriller media product. During the development of ideas we have also decided what codes and conventions to include to ensure high potential and structure for our film product. Also during our planning we have considered what skills and technologies we have learnt and developed in order to build and create this media product. The main task was a great form to help develop our time management and planning for the 2 minute opening sequence.
Our media product has most conventions from the thriller genre because it uses usual aspects of the thriller genre. During our media product we have used elements of darkness particularly within the building where the protagonist emerges. This has helped us to create tension and suspense for our audience showing a range of emotions that the film has produced. Another conventions which we have used is claustrophobic areas in order to sustain and cause mental disturbance in the protagonist’s point of view. An example of the entrapment of the protagonist is the corridor scene that the character’s body language makes him weak and powerless resisting any temptation to escape the location of the opening sequence. Throughout the use of POV and over the shoulder shots our group has created suspension to ensure that the audience was lured into the narrative of the thriller genre. During our research, our group felt that we should consider the psychological sub genre because our group felt it created more purpose and lead to Todorov’s narrative theory. The theory consists that during the beginning equilibrium is outset but eventually disequilibrium is shown making the narrative a climatic narrative. Also the film does consist of good/evil contrast that through the use of clothing, the black clothing represents the antagonist more powerful and sinister than the protagonist. Whereas in contrast, the white clothing represents the protagonist as innocent and weak which links to one of the main conventions in the thriller genre. Our group has also considered using obtrusive editing such as montage and jump cuts in order to build atmosphere and tension for the audience so it can link to the thriller genre. This has also helped us to experiment different variety of techniques to create different meanings such as using jump cuts/ cross cutting in order to show confusion and back story of the protagonist during the protagonist scene. The next convention for our thriller that we have included is using photographs/ stairs to create tension and shock factor for the audience. Our group believed that the photograph had represented as innocence and the back story of the protagonist which eventually builds up the atmosphere for our target audience. The photograph has also linked to the role of the protagonist that the child is linked to his secret past either as a father or a related person associated with the little girl. This also creates confusion for the audience allowing us to link to the sub genre that we initially wanted for our target audience. Another convention that our group has included in order to create the media product more into a thriller is including psychological aspects that two characters are psychologically preying each other’s mental ability which is referring to the protagonist/ antagonist. For example during the corridor scene the protagonist has seen the antagonist but after is scared which creates horror and the shock factor for our target audience. Another use for the psychological aspect is during the ending scene that the antagonist had ended the protagonist's life through the use of his characteristic of killing. The next convention that our group has included is using flashbacks particularly montage in order to create a dreamscape environment. Our group felt that after the analysis of Face off that the dreamscape environment would be considered a effective and brilliant use of editing in order to create confusion and change the atmosphere for our target audience. The flashbacks also represent back-story and realism for the audience creating a psychological background story for the audience making it very interesting and expressive for the media product. Also the contrast of black and white technique was also sued from Face off, our group felt that by using this conventions to develop our titles and clothing this would create colour representation of opposite sides between innocence and danger. Our group has also included black and white for the titles at the ending scene, which makes it very creative and expressive for the target audience which links to our sub genre. The camera work such as POV shots and medium shots has helped us to create different meanings and interpretations for the audience which makes the media product an emotional roller coaster. And finally the soundtrack has been our greatest conventions because by using Dead space’s soundtrack, the soundtrack has created mystery and has created horror for the audience. Although this has experimented with mental emotions, our group has felt that with the soundtrack it has shown more horror aspects which has given us the impression that our media product may become more horrific than psychological. Overall by including these main conventions this has developed structure and form for our media product creating, confusion, curiousity, suspension, tension, mystery, horror and a dramatic climax which has setten the audience on the roller coaster effect. This is linked to the psychological sub genre showing that our conventions are developing into the sub genre.
Our group felt during research that Face Off was our inspiration that although it’s classified as a action- tragedy thriller the film does show allot of useful editing and mise en scene that our group can distribute in order to enthuses the horror and tragic moment of the protagonist's death. For example in the carousel scene, the use of editing throughout the dreamscape background was an interesting and surprising scene, the colour differentiation was a useful editing technique in order to enthesise the protagonist’s death which we applied to for our media product making the red contrast against the darkness. Face off also gave us inspiration to consider the use of POV that during the assassination scene, the use of POV makes the scene create tension and action. Our group also felt the use of slow motion was particular useful for adding more horrific and surprising elements for the thriller genre, in which our group had included during the silting scene of our media product. And finally we also felt that the soundtrack to Face Off was also effective due to the diegetic children’s laughter and fairground music making the atmosphere very sinister and link to Todorov’s theory of narrative. Also the characters also applied allot of good/evil contrast which made us develop the convention to a more psychological sub genre. The dreamscape filter was very useful and particularly effective because it makes the environment link to memories and create confusion for the audience. During the carousel scene, it creates a false impression of innocence making the atmosphere seem very surprising and exciting for the audience. Our group felt that the dreamscape filter would also link to the flashback and back story aspects of the psychological sub genre which can effectively help to achieve our target audience. Colour representation has also been a great convention for the media product as well, for example during the death scene a reaction shot is shown on a white horse with blood showing that innocence has died. This has also combined with diegetic horse sound enthusing the suffering and pain of the carousel. The carousel is represent as a dreamscape and fun filled area where innocence father and sons enjoy each other but however the assassin has interrupted this presence of innocence by trying to kill the protagonist. But however the atmosphere shifts from the father to the son that although the father is suffering the audience feel sympathy for the child, as his life is sacrificed for his father. Also after the horse scene, a tilt shot is used to show balloons drifting away to the sky which represents the child’s soul flying away to heaven and the child is now at rest. Our group wanted to show colour representation during scenes like the slitting scene that James Mellor is wearing a white t shirt to represent innocence whereas Luke Parker is wearing a black hoodie representing evil and no presence of evil. During the ending scene, our media product has shown a POV shot/ reaction shot it shows the protagonist’s blood is covered on his hand which represents innocence. The opening titles to Face off also show black and white as well, showing the ideas that we have developed from the current media product to our media product in order to build and develop conventions of the thriller genre. The next idea that we felt was effective was the soundtrack of the carousel that it was a continuous beat which built up allot of atmosphere making it very dramatic and create suspense. Also our group felt that the soundtrack was a great way to show dramatic aspects which also links to the psychological sub genre. Although Face off isn’t a psychological sub genre, its mise en scene still relates to the aspects of the psychological hybrid thriller. Also we particular found the diegetic child’s laughter to be particularly emotional and effective. The child’s laughter relates to the relationship between the father and son showing the child’s love for his father making it seem very happy and emotional for the audience. Originally we wanted to include the child’s laughter for the same meaning and also to include as a false impression for innocence and purity of the soul. But however during our filming we have decided not too because the photograph would work in the same effect but in a different format, although it was too complex so we had to change it during the filming in order to keep the narrative detailed and structured. And the final convention that we have found particularly useful was the contrast between good and evil that this is a typical aspect from the thriller genre that our group felt to include for our media product. This would also help to show competition and mentality of each other, that the protagonist/antagonist are preying each other’s mind in order to succeed. But however for our protagonsit, he’s represented as scared and feeble with feminine characteristics but still he wants to survive from the antagonist in order to survive from his fate. So overall Face off was our biggest inspiration because of the relationships and dreamscape environment it has created for its audience making it very confusing and create a dramatic climax which links to the psychological aspects of the psychological sub genre. Although Face off isnt a psychological thriller, but more of an action thriller, it still has mise en scene that it’s linked to the mysteriour and dramatic experiences of the psychological thriller.
However our media product has also challenged some conventions of the thriller genre as well by mostly including horror aspects instead of psychological aspects. The horror genre can easily affect the thriller genre which may affect the narrative, during our research most like the psychological genre so therefore our media product must appeal to the audience as a psychological thriller not a horror. A horror genre shows supernatural elements full of fictional content which may be too gruesome or horrific for younger audiences. Horror genres also show nightmares and haunted locations, our media product has shown some examples of the horror genre such as the burning scenes, some audience members from the audience feedback believe that the burning montage scene of both the photograph and playground were to confusing and represented as nightmares. The roundabout scene was believed to be represented as a apocalyptic future making it seem terrifying and horrific to teenagers. Although this shows a dramatic and a emotional climax, it still contains conventions of the horror genre which may frighten and cause horror to other audiences. Another scene that we have sued that includes more horror aspects of the death scene that the horror genre consists the antagonist ending he protagonist’s life with his characteristic also most people from our audience feedback believe that there was too much explicit gore creating too much supernatural and explicit atmosphere scaring the target audience. Our group decided this scene has significantly started to threaten the sub genre of the psychological thriller genre, also our group originally believed that the burning montage would represent the protagonist's emotions establishing a connection between the media product and the audience. But however this useful technique has clearly been uneffective and given the wrong impression for the media product being a horror genre more than a psychological thriller. This also affects the structure and form of the media product effecting our target audience’s interests. The next scene that our group felt endangered our media product from being a psychological thriller was the antagonist, that the antagonist was representing itself as a nightmare and the protagonsit responds to him through fear and horror. Most of the audience through feedback believed that this scene made the antagonist more stronger and more athletic than the protagonsit making him as the dominant male and the stereotypical stalker killer. Most of the audience from the questionnaire results believed that the antagonist would wear black clothing to represent as no emotion and stronger than the protagonist. But however our group had also felt that the antagonist was represented as a nightmare because of his clothing and his machete that by the BBFC it classifies 15 age certificates as use of explicit gore and violence. That the antagonist's violence is very dramatic and contains strong gory images to represent as sadistic and horrific. Therefore the media product has used sadistic and gory images to display the protagonist's death making it create the shock factor for the audience. And finally diegetic sounds such as the heartbeat, door movement and footsteps has created suspension for the audience making them feel scared and worried about the antagonist that creates fear. Few audience members though the heartbeat sound was stereotypical and built too much supernatural elements to the atmosphere making it link more to the horror genre. The footsteps at the ending scene has shown the scene is developing emotions and feelings for the audience which also links to the mysterious aspects and perception of the human mind for a psychological sub thriller genre. However the footsteps represent end of life and death for the protagonsit that the antagonist has no purpose left for the protagonist that evil has triumphed over good which makes it very climatic and leaves a cliff hanger for the audience.
For our media product, our group believes that from the media product the conventions are more linked to the psychological sub genre due to the following aspects and similarities. During the photograph scene, it represents the back story and purpose of the protagonsit making it follow a stream of consciousness which leaves a description of an individual’s life. The photograph has psychological confused audiences due to the burning of the photograph scene which makes it creates tension and mystery. Also the antagonist had hidden his identity with the use of a white innocent mask. During our research we initial had the colour representational ideas form the dark knight because during the robbery scene, the clown masks that the robbers wear are represented as innocent and most audience wouldn't expect an innocent figure such as clown to have presence of evil or any horrific emotions. But as the scene progresses it develops, the media product shows the true identity of the robbers making it very surprising and create the shock factor of the true antagonist’s identity which is linked to the Joker. Our group believed that by including the white innocent mask, this would create a false impression of innocence for our target audience over the true identity of the antagonist. This makes the media product very interesting and encourages the audience to observe more of the narrative in order to find links between the antagonist and the protagonsit so they can profile his character and life. The next scene that would make our media product an psychological thriller would be the use of flashbacks that particularly from Face off the use of flashbacks represent past events and links to the character’s life making it very realistic and create drama. The burning screens of the photograph represent secrets making it more mysterious and it doesn't give enough of the storyline to the audience making it very secretive and develop allot of emotions. Whereas the burning of the photograph represents his passion and emotion for the child on the photograph showing his link between himself and the child but however this also creates the impression that the child could have either affected the life of the protagonsit or relate to himself. Therefore creates mystery allowing he audience to figure out who the protagonsit truly is and what’s his purpose which links to one of the themes in a psychological thriller of reality, identity and purpose for the protagonist. Another element that makes our media product an psychological thriller is the use of the dreamscape filter that by including similar editing techniques similar techniques from Face off our group has acquire the same meaning and theme for the media product. The dreamscape environment represents confusion and reference to the backstory of the characters making the audience feel very scared and worried about the fate of the protagonist and the horror of the memory. This also links to Face off but however their use of representation is different compared for our media product that they use the assassin to kill and try to end the protagonist's death but instead it dramatically changes to the son making it very emotive and depressing for the audience. Whereas our film only ends the life of the protagonsit only consisting of drama elements. The dreamscape environment also makes the location very sinister that during the antagonist’s scene a tilt is used to observe the building but however the building is covered with darkness making it represent a nightmare and the urban area into a dream. This create different atmospheres, environments and impressions over the media product. The next characteristic the media product contains that links to the psychological thriller sub genre is realism, that all psychological sub genres are placed in ordinary and realistic areas such as towns/ cities but however as the narrative gradually develops the location starts to reveal its purpose making the audience consumed of confusion and fear. The audience feel that the media product shows interesting mise en scene that the audience cant trust due to false impression and false identity making the actual media product represent less of a memory and more of a reliability. That the narrative is more horrifying and dramatic showing that audience members can’t trust or confused about which characters are good/evil. This definitely links to our psychological thriller, which shows that our media product does include this state of confusion atmosphere and tension environment that nothing in the media product can’t be trusted, making it very mysterious. The soundtrack of the media product also improves the suspension of the thriller genre because at the opening scene it starts continuous as a sound bridge. But after the jump cuts, it slowly develops into a higher pitch and slower tempo making it very intensive and feel trapped for the audience. The nursery rhyme builds allot of irony that most audience members assume that the rhyme from dead space “twinkle little star” should be childish and soft pitched. But however in this media product, the soundtrack is twisted and turned into an obtrusive soundtrack making it a twisted alternate atmospheric song opposite to the original making the atmosphere more fearful and loathsome. This shows that our media products has taken realistic literature and forms of speech and turned it around so it can build up different impressions and link to the psychological thriller. But however this soundtrack could seem more horrific than psychological for some audience members so therefore our group muss consider the generic conventions for both psychological thriller and the horror genre. This will help us create difference and allow us to achieve high success of attracting our ideal target audience. And finally the final aspect that would make our media product seen like a psychological thriller would be the observing of the Robert Saul's book. The book is represented as a form of literature to present iconic structure of purpose that as the protagonist observes and scans the book, he wants to find answers to his past by finding new forms of media. The book also represent knowledge and power that by observing the book, the character is passive and wants top absorb the potential for survival. The book prop also represents the stream of consciousness that it describes the individual's point of view on it’s own identity, purpose and existence of mind. From Face off, similar effect is shown through the use of the shallow focus and silhouettes of the assassins that although he seems powerful and dominant he also seeks answers to his past, which makes the audience feel very confused and unappeased to him. After the death scene, the antagonist has realised the consequences of his actions this makes the audience feel little sympathy for him as the death was a mistake that took the life of an innocent child.
Our next biggest inspiration was the Dark knight because it contained allot of camera angles and clothing that our group found particularly interesting that would help our media product. The first useful conventions in the action thriller that we found particularly useful were the white clown masks that although the clowns are represented as figures of happy and joyful innocent people this gives the false impression of innocence making it very unusual for the audience. Particularly the Joker although he’s represented as a clown he’s only represented as an n nightmare because his white make up represents innocence and creates a false identity. Whereas the red mouth represents danger and threat to the audience allowing the audience to see that the Joker is being represented as the opposite to a clown making it an alternate version of the clown in order to shock and make the audience very scared due to his presence. During our media product our group had decided to use the same sort of mask in order to convey the antagonist's identity making it very complex and confusing for the audience of the character’s identity and personality. Another convention that our group found useful was the sophisticated clothing that are robbers particularly the Joker were wearing different types of clothing such as suits and few were wearing sub cultural clothing making it creating different classes and status. This also links to the representation of masculinity making the Joker very strong and intelligent which also links to the stereotypical representation of men. And finally the last conventions that our group found particularly interesting were the composition of shots that during the opening scene our group felt there were lots of variety of shots and angles in order to create different meanings and create different atmospheres for the audience. Particular examples that our group felt were interesting were the following that during one of the robbers scene while holding his clown mask for own original ideas our group wanted it include this sort of shot for our antagonist allowing us to have a zoom for a close up of the white clown mask. This represents hidden identity that the camera doesn’t reveal the antagonist’s face and instead it relates to the mask which creates mystery and confusion for the audience. But however instead our group had decided to develop this shot into another form in order to gain a similar effect but it developed a different form. The Dark knight is classed as a action/ thriller similar to Face off but however the genre also consists of drama showing that it links to the psychological thriller because the psychological thriller is defined as a thriller with mystery and drama effects. Another shot that our group had found useful were the close ups involved such as the vault scene. Our group felt that including close ups of the protagonist would show his feelings and emotions of the situation that he’s currently involved with. And the final scene that our group had found effective was the use of the long shot during the bank scene, our group believed that the long shot would be useful for our media product in order to develop the use of tension and the feelings for the audience.
For social groups we have decided to consider all the different variety of gender, age, class, stereotypes and nationality of representation. Our characters of the antagonist and the protagonsit show allot of representation and conventions. For gender our actors are represented as stereotypical older en because from our research on the target audience, most people answered on our questionnaire that they believe that the protagonsit and the antagonist to be male. Our group also felt that if we chose women to represent as either of the roles this may challenge stereotypical representation of gender and effect the narrative of our media product. Our group also feel that men are represented more socially popular particular in lots of thriller films such as the dark knight starring Heath Ledger and Christian Bale. Also we believe that men would be linking and attracting to our target audience. Also during our questionnaire most audience members believe that the protagonsit/ antagonist to be aged 25- 40 yrs old due to time management our group couldn’t find adult actors so therefore we chose teenage actors in order to establish connections and links to the target audience members of under 18. But however our group felt that by including adult characteristics to our young male actors we can attract our target audience more effectively and show more representational conventions of gender. Throughout the use of clothing and appearance for example smoking, sub cultural clothing our actors have shown lots of characteristics for being adults which can also attract adults audiences as well. The next group that our group has concerned with was age that during our opening sequence we had represented our characters to act like 25-40n year old adults which also relates to the psychological sub genre to a 15 rated genre. The age range would also allow less restrictions of realism and perception of history which gives the impression to the audience that the actors are portrayed to have a long historical back story. By making them act like adults, this has helped to entheise this development allowing more narrative and better links between the protagonsit/antagonist. But however our body language must be considered and not seem like a teenage this may affect the interpretation of the characters. The next group that our group has considered were social class that our class are represented in middle/working class making it very realistic and relating to the audience members creating connections. From our sociology knowledge as well, its proven that working class does commit most crimes making it climatic and link to the horrific realism of the media product. Our group has also thought that the use of stereotypes would be considered less because not including lots of stereotypes has open new advantages and opportunities for us giving us new possibilities to develop the characters of our film. The only stereotypes that we have included were victim/ stalker in order to create a very complex and high intension atmosphere for our target audience allowing the narrative to create different emotional factors for the environments. The use of clothing has also helped to present these stereotypes such as using black clothing to make the antagonist seem emotionless and strong but however the white trainers has only challenged this by indicating there is little innocence inside of him similar to the antagonist in Face off. Whereas the victim is shown stereotypical through the use of the white t shirt and the femininity characteristics feeling very passive, scared and unsure about the location and unaware of the antagonist. This links to the mental contrast between the protagonist and the antagonist making it very interesting and argumentative. And the final social group that our media product has present is nationality that during our target audience questionnaire most people associate the area of the location to be set in USA however due to economic reasons our group has decided to use England which is more locally and more cheaper. This also helps us to build it’s own nationality film that this filmwas made in the UK making it very interesting and unexpected whereas most institutions such as 20 th century FOX and paramount pictures are associated in the USA.
Our media product would be successful to be associated with different media institutions because of the audience feedback that our group has received mainly positive. Our media product is mostly linked to current media products such as Face off and the Dark knight that both media products are associated with big film institutions such as Paramount pictures and Warner Brothers which allow global distribution for current media products. However from the target audience our target audience is similar to the audiences of both Face off and the Dark knight, therefore the similarities have the same meanings making links between current media products which shows that our media product will receive high status similar to blockbuster films such as the Dark knight. Our media product would be mass produced because of the reviews that we have received on both our face book page and audience feed back sheet. It would be distributed for multimedia for both cinema and DVD, this currently linked to our research for the target audience that most audience members go to the cinema monthly and from our audience feedback we have asked in one of our questions what sort of sub media would you want to see our media product on either on cinema or DVD or both. By considering to submit our media product on multimedia we have followed our target audience and have gained high reputation allowing us to distribute our media product at a bigger scale and global/locally as well. Our media product is made in the UK which is currently linked to our research for the target audience what nationality would they associate the media product to be set in. Most audience members have associated with the USA but however due to economic reasons our group has deduced to make it simplistic by filming in our own nationality in England. This might not achieve much for our target audience but however this has made it allot easier and less time consuming giving us extra time to consider the elements of mise en scene, composition of camera angles/shots and the characters portrayed in the media product. So therefore our media product can be funded from the UK film council which can help us catalyse our production allowing us to develop our contribution and create a bigger range for the global and local distribution of the media product. Also if the media product was created and funded in the UK this will help us to distribute our media product a lot easier onto localised TV channels as a TV movie on channels such as Film 4. Film 4 is one of the biggest British film channels that most of the audience enjoys and hosts most of the British films which can allow us to distribute our product onto their channel. This will help improve variety of British made media product and help reach out to our target audience eventually creating reputation and success for our media product. But however TV channels such as sky movies wouldn’t be necessary because sky movies show more American films and different range of age certificates whereas film 4 only shows any age certificate for young/ teenage/adult audiences. This will allow us to reach out to teenagers allowing us to spread and develop our campaign across all media institutions. And finally our media product is rated over 15 or over due to explicit gore and use of horrific images which creates restriction for younger audiences such as children to not watch out media product. The content of our 15 age rated media product allows us to link to both adultery and teenage audiences giving us a bigger and better range. However if our media product wants to distribute with global institutions such as Warner brothers our group must consider the technical aspects of typical psychological thrillers such as Inception and develop ours in order to receive and achieve high status and similar formality.
Also our group feels that our media product would be successful because it links to other psychological thrillers such as “Inception” which contains supernatural elements based on Face off and The Dark knight. Inception is distributed by Warner Brothers similar to the Dark knight. So therefore if our media product is linked to Inception therefore it can have the same global distribution similar to the psychological thriller genre. By researching the reviews most critics believe that Inception has contained individual twists and turns making it into an emotional roller coaster for all audiences that are excited to discover the cumulative visceral, intellectual and emotional impacts of the sub genre. However Inception is rated as a 12 whereas ours is linked to 15 year olds so therefore our content would be more sadistic and horrific compared to the content displayed in Inception. Although that our media product has similar dramatic and mysterious aspects compared to Inception however content will effect the distribution of audiences which may restrict younger audiences from observing and watching our media product which also affects the reputation and status of our media product. There fore Inception contains allot of dreamscape and supernatural elements similar to our media product but however Inception’s mise en scene for types of editing such as special effects and different composition shots may create differ nation between the two media products which effects the different global/local distributions that both media products would have. So therefore in order to receive the same reputation our group must consider develop the technologies and mise en scene in order to gain high potential and reputation so that it’s likely to be distributed with institutions such as Warner Brothers. And also our group must also consider creating new soundtracks that create the same meaning and effect for the audience eventually building up structure and clarity over the media product.
Our target audience consists of teenagers being around the age range of 15 or over. Our group has chosen this category because most audience members are under 18 and our group felt that teenagers would be great for targeting because this will able us to consider establishing connections between our young actors with the audience members. Also if our group had chosen younger audiences this would restrict some adult content enable us to include violence and sadistic moments linking to the psychological sub genre of our media product. Our audience is aimed for a mixture of males and females because the 40 people that we have asked were equal males and females this would also achieve equality and please both gender audience allowing us to widen our audience range of social groups. Also males and females that are particularly teenagers that are 18 or over even adults as well. Adults are an option but mostly we are targeting teenagers because our group felt that it would be easier and would establish lost of connection between us and them allowing the audience to be interested in our narrative of our media product. During the questionnaire some people were 25- 55 yrs old allowing us an option to increase our audience range. But however our group mostly wanted to appeal to teenagers in order to maintain the links and connections for the social groups. Also our target audience people who enjoy psychological thriller and go to the cinema monthly, as shown in the questionnaire results, the psychological sub genre has allowed us to consider the mystery and drama elements of the congruity of our film. Our group have also targeted people who go the cinema monthly because our group are considered using multi media to express our media product in different forms allowing better distribution. Other films such as Face off are similar to ours with similar audience. Face off has acclaimed both audiences and critics gaining positive reviews. The film ahs included dreamscape elements and dramatic surprises for the audience which is linked to the mise en scene to our psychological thriller media product allows better links and connections. Another thriller film that has simialr audience is the Dark Knight which has a broad range of audiences making themselves very successful and attractive. The openings sequence of the robbery has covered most of the mise en scene from the composition of the camera shots and the clothing in order to make the audience feel confused and feared of the narrative. This is also similar to our media product.
During our research for the target audience our group found that most people watch 15 rated media products which our group had decided was particular fair. After doing researching and planning on the BBFC website (the British board of film classification) I have discovered the following features that a 15 age certificate must contain in order to show their rating. First classification is the use of strong and painful violence which shows sadistic or gory images, during our media product our group has shown this through the use of the ending scene that the antagonist with the use of a machete had ended the life of the protagonist unfortunately causing him to bleed which can be too explicit for younger audiences. However this scene also endangered the sub genre which is currently a psychological thriller but however due to the survival and nightmare characteristics of the film this can affect the structure and form of the media product. The second characteristic for the 15 age certificate is use of easily accessible weapons that aren’t glamorised. Our media product has shown this through the use of the machete that due to safety reason our group has used a plastic one but still it contained the same representation of a real one. The machete represents as a tool of threat and despair making the audience feel scared and feeble as it ends the life of the protagonist. The weapon that our group has use isn’t glamorise our group has only decided to use the machete in one scene in order to not show over usage and too much enthuses of the threat of the machete. This has created the shock factor for our audience that during feedback most people thought the machete scene was very unsuspecting and made them horrified of the image they experienced. The next characteristic is the horror shown through threat and menacing images unless sadistic, during our media product some images have been sadistic such as the ending and the photograph scene making it very unstable and it threatens the genre of our film that most people may consider our film to become more of an horror than a psychological thriller. Next characteristic is the use of dangerous behaviour that it shouldn’t effect detail and it could be copied, our group has shown this through the use of control and management that all violence and psychological behaviour relates either to the back story and contrast if the protagonist and the antagonist. This will help us to not effect the detail and facts of our media product which can keep the congruity of our media product. Next characteristic is drugs that they shouldn’t be used to promote or encourage younger audience for miss use. Our group has shown this through the opening scene, due to safety reasons our group decided to use burned paper in order to not mise use any real cigarettes our group wanted to create realism and makes the antagonist seem stronger and masculine compared to the protagonist. The cigarette is real but however our group felt that the antagonist needed all tools for a typical smoker allowing to link the realism and perception of the audience minds which also links to the sub genre of the film. If younger audiences have observed this film, this wouldn't promote them to use drugs but it would make them feel very confused and uncomfortable for the images that are shown for a teenage audience. Next characteristic is the use of language that it can be in frequent use of strong language, stronger terms may be acceptable and aggressive use of language is also acceptable. Our group hasn’t included any dialogue because our group felt this would be effective creating mystery and different interpretation of the feelings and emotions that the protagonist/ antagonist are experiencing. This would also link to the sub genre of our media product making it very symmetric and different from current media products. Face off during the opening scene has used no dialogue for similar effect of our media product showing that our group has developed more conventions from thriller films. Also our group thought that with dialogue this would give clues and representation of the narrative, so therefore our group felt that we wanted to develop and build the narrative similar like a typical psychological thriller. And the final characteristic that our group has considered was the theme that no theme is prohibited provided treatment is appropriate for 15 year olds, our group felt that the theme of our media product. Also our psychological thriller would provide treatment for 15 year olds because it contains relief moments allowing the audience to express and calm themselves either from the stress and stream of consciousness the media product has shown. So overall for our media product has shown all these characteristics for a typical 15 rated media product allowing us to follow and attract our target audience better and our group has shown that we can develop our ideas in order to fit the needs for the audience allowing us to attract and address our target audience that consists of teenagers and optionally adults. By choosing a age rating our group has developed content and the theme of our media product allowing us to consider the technical codes and mise en scene which can show that our group is considered how to represent 15 age con tent and different meanings by considering the stages of our planning.
During our research our target audience consist of 15 yrs or over that are a mixture of males and females which is create a wide range of audience members and age ranges. Our group felt that most of the scene in our media product were too horrific, showing explicit gore/violence and use of sadistic imagery which is linked to our structure of the film. Younger audience may feel very worried and frightened by horrified and confusing imagery shown in the media product. So therefore our audience is older compared to child audiences because of the content restricted for younger audience. Based on the research from the BBFC (British Board for film classification) our film shows a lot of conventions that are linked to the 15 age certificate, this also links to our research of the target audience that most watch 15 or over rated movies. Our media product has attracted lots of the target audience through the use of a climatic narrative and a psychological atmosphere which builds the following elements: drama, mystery, suspension, fear, horror, perception of the min, stream of consciousness, realism and the contrast between the protagonist and antagonist against each other in a mental competition for survival. Most thought the opening scene had built up tension and as the footage builds up and shows more of the narrative, this eventually effects the psychological atmosphere allowing the audience to feel very concerned of the protagonist and to feel afraid of the antagonist. Also most audience members, however, believe the antagonist does portray as more of a fear than a figure making him represent as a killer. This isn’t what our group had intended to portray, our group had portrayed him as a stereotypical stalker which hunts and consumes the protagonist. Our media product has also included lots of different conventions based on allot of inspirational films particularly Face off- mise en scene, editing and sound and The Dark knight- clothing, props and camera angles. The next convention that we have included in order to attract and address our audience is setting the environment in the present time period as most of the target audience wants the location to be set in the present time period, we have included this also from the Dark knight which was also set in the present. Other films such as Terminator would have a mix time period such as future/present which our group considered not including due to the high technology and mise en scene of the sequence. And therefore films such as Face off include having it set in the past period to trigger it like a memory but however ours is different due to being set in the present time period. And the final characteristic that we have included in order to attract and address our audience is the use fo colour representation similar to Face off, that by using contrast of black and white in the titles our group has attracted our audience by using the black to represent the antagonist which also links to our questionnaire for the target audience where as most people believe that black clothing does associate with the antagonist making him present with evil so therefore the use of white has represented innocence which links both to the psychological sub genre and the regualr thriller genre due to the contrast of 2 characters having an mental survival agaianst each other in one particular claustrophobi location.
Most of the audience members during the feedback have said they thought the mise en scene was the most effective elements to our psychological sub genre. Through the use of camerawork from basic shots such as POV, close up, extreme close up and shot/reverse shot to more complex shots such as establishing shot, long shot and the side angles. Our target audience has shown different emotions and interpretations of the different type of meanings making the narrative very complex and create sadistic imagery which affects the aspects of the psychological thriller sub genre. Most camera angles are related to the “Dark Knight” such as establishing shots and side angles which shows that by relating to current film product for different elements our group has shown we can use and develop current elements in a typical thriller and amplify it to our potential. So therefore our media product would gain similar meaning and atmospheric moments which can make the narrative contain strong messages and values that link to the meanings and messages for the mise en scene. However during our initial ideas in story boards our group had changed the congruity of camera angles and shots in order to create and experiment different ways of approach. For example during the protagonist scene our original ideas after the book scene that the protagonist was to see the antagonist and follow him. But instead he hears a door sound and our group has used stair in order to show potential and detail of the scene. Also stairs are another conventions that is usually used as a convention for the thriller genre. Therefore by changing our planning we have listened and tried to include as much conventions we can so that our media product applies more to the thriller genre than the horror genre. Another aspect for the mise en scene were the characters and clothing that some of the audience believed that the roles of the protagonist/antagonist were very portrayed and had shown allot of colour representation. This was also asked in the questionnaire of what particular colour does the antagonist wear in most thriller media products. That during our research we have also concentrated on the codes and conventions of the thriller genre making it more useful and reliable in the process. The characters in the media product are also young males which also relates to the questionnaire that we have asked some audience members what gender would they associate the antagonist with and also we believe that masculinity would be very useful and appropriate because most males are represented as socially popular and more athletic which also links to the stereotypical roles of gender which also makes it very interesting and usual for a typical thriller sequence. The males ,however, weren't adults shown in our results of the questionnaire so instead through the use of acting and costume we have decided to portray them like regular grown men showing how typical men carry on with their lives. This also links to realism which is another key aspect of the psychological thriller genre which we target for our audience members. And finally for the use of soundtrack and sounds, most people thought that it was very depressing and had a hint of evil presence making it very sinister and show allot of darkness. The soundtrack from Dead space is a twisted alternate typical nursery rhyme from "Twinkle Twinkle little star” which creates an alternate world that the audience can enjoy to observe and observe all the psychological thriller aspects. Overall the film product is portray as an unexpected and realistic media product that portrays ordinary people but eventually as the narrative developed the mise en scene eventually grasps the audiences attention making it create allot of emotive, dramatic and mysterious climax which also links to our sub genre.
After the editing and finishing for our media product our group had decided to include a facebook page in order to collect more audience feedback and to check if our media product has acquired the target audience that we initial intended to have. From the results I believe that our film did attract allot of feedback and status. There were 6 likes to the video so therefore our media product had gained developing reputation and it was favoured by lots of friends and family. It’s also shown great interest for our media product similar to Face off/ The Dark Knight. From the comments on the facebook page, comments such as “I don’t get it” and “makes you think what’s going on and what’s going to happen next!!” shows that most people do associate our media product to be an psychological thriller. But however few comments such as “It still creeps me out” shows that the media product can show aspects of nightmares and fears which may danger the sub genre of our media product. These comments show both dramatic and psychological aspects making audience members feel confused and scared allowing mystery and drama elements to build up the atmosphere. However the media product has also attracted older audiences which is better because our media product is starting to developing the range of the target audience allowing better reviews and variety of age, gender, class and nationality which it’s building up the distribution that our group initially intended. Hopefully when it progressiongly gets more months there should be more feedback and likes on the video therefore building its reputation. However I feel that as the horror interpretations are also being noticed this can also developed the interpretations of the thriller sub genre. More people may recognise this media product as more of a horror genre than a psychological thriller. Also I felt that our media product could have received more feedback comments on the facebook page as soon as it was uploaded, so therefore it's developing it’s reputation thorough thoughts and ideas. If our media product was distributed globally/ locally by a particular film production company so for example Film 4 or Warner brothers the reputation that it would gain would be slowly. So therefore it gradually builds its image through out the use of creativity and imagination.
During our main task our group has learnt so much knowledge for the different types of technology which had made our technological aspects greater and wider giving us a bigger and better range of skills such as editing, forming and finishing. During the preliminary task I had little knowledge of different soft wares and technologies only knowing the basic technologies such as the computer and camera. But during the main task I have learnt how to use lots of different camera shots and angles that by using new and improved angles and shots for the hand held camera I have extended my courage of using different new ways to entertain and create similar effect for the audience. I have also extended my knowledge of the style of the camera making it very unique and precise for the composition of framework. Also the filming process, I have learned how to use the camera tripod more for still and concise shots. Another technology that I have learnt since the main task is the different variety of the editing software, that I have learned how to use i movie by experimenting different filters and montages for example during the photograph scene our group has edited and combined with diegetic sounds allowing different layers of media to build on each other. Our group has also extended the knowledge for different colour representations and cross cutting editing by using techniques such as jump cuts, sounds bridges and cross dissolve. Our group has also learnt how to experiment and apply techniques in order to make the atmosphere very secretive and mysterious which builds up creativity and prevents the narrative from being revealed and it also doesn't reveal any clues of the storyline and the ending which is typical for a psychological thriller sub genre. And also our group has learned to develop old techniques in different forms such as special effects such as the use of slow motion for the composition of time and space which is linking to the death of the protagonist during the scene in Face off. Also our group has learnt to use cross dissolve scenes particular the introduction of the protagonist which makes it very unusual and confusing imagery which can build unusual questions for the target audience. Finally our group has also learnt how to edit and use different soundtracks with diegetic sounds in order to build a flow of music so the scenes can have differentiation making the atmosphere very intensive. Garage band has also helped us to alter soundtracks in order to create sound bridges and synchronous sounds to make a soundtrack which appeals to the target audience that observes psychological thriller media products. From garage band, I have learnt how to alter the pitch, tempo and form of the soundtrack while editing and altering the elements of music. So therefore I have learnt more technological aspects on editing and how to construct a blended soundtrack while altering the elements of music.
During our filming our group had used the basic hand held camera in order to record and show scenes for our media product of a psychological hybrid genre. During the filming process, our group has gained new strengths and developed them such as the camera that it was easier and simple to use for our media product making it very complicated and allowed us to record our scenes better and stronger. Another strength that our group has shown was that during our filming we had used different angles for the camera such as contrast of low/high angles by using either a tri pod or hand held strap showing that our depth of field for the camera work has increasingly developed and our group had built better composition. Another strength is that the camera is easily connected to the imacs in the college allowing us to import/export footage more faster and better allowing us to experiment and use a series of trail and improvement so we can develop our conventions and ideas for the typical thriller genre. This has also helped us to consider what camera angles/ shots would create the meaning that we initially wanted such as the opening scene by using a montage of side and close up angles this has helped to develop our montage allowing to show reflective and passive emotions for the audience. The side angles reliefs and causes confusion for the audience whereas the close up shows the inner and strong feelings of the antagonist. And the final strength that our group has shown that the camera was small and hand held containing a hand held strap allowing us to create POV shots and tracking shots due to the high amount of mobility. If the camera was bigger and more technological this make the filming process more complicated and less easier in order to do it. Also this would restrict the mobility which enables us to do particular camera angles/shots which restricts some ideas and conventions that our sub genre has created. The weaknesses of the filming process were that the camera was less advanced therefore it made some scenes too dark which didn't reveal the character such as he ending scene. Most audience members from the audience feedback had said that the ending scene was too dark and didn’t show the character walking of the distance along the corridor. This made the narrative more complex and hard to understand, which restricts the effect of the shot and POV of the protagonist. The camera also lacked focus that even with a torch it didn't show enough focus on the camera angle/shot this made it more harder and our group had to improvise new ideas and solutions in order to record the angle/ shot. Although this has developed our time management and developing ideas this has made it allot harder to construct the congruity of our media product. The camera also was hard to focus on particular objects or character due to lack of concentration of the shot. For example during the ending scene of the protagonist’s death, the camera was hard to focus on the protagonist’s hand due to the lack of focus and even with the light it made the image look very abstract and less formal. Finally although the camera’s size has given us mobility and allowed us to construct hand held shots, this still lacks the technology to record complex shots without the proper accessories or technologies such as the character is turning 180 but however due to the technology our group has restricted that shot and instead used a POV shot to make the narrative less complicated and allowed us to build the form.
During our editing our group has learned to edit with the aid of garage band in order to create a variety of different sound such as synchronous/desynchronous and sound bridges. From copyright free sources such as the dead space trailer soundtrack, Inception main soundtrack, Untitled 7 by Signor Ross, and Welcome to Limbo our group has learned to edit and alter their pitch and tempo in order to make it blend and new during the footage of the media product which has allowed us to consider the mood of atmosphere and its allowed us to create a stream of emotions and purpose allowing better structure and composition of the mood of atmosphere for the audience. After researching current media product that already contain the thriller genre, the soundtrack that our group has listened us has built up the tension and emotions of the audience such as the soundtrack of Face off that during the opening it starts of repeating the same sequence but eventually it builds up happier and creates love between the father and the son. But however the soundtrack changes into a sinister and depressing sound which has already over run the happiness and mood of the carousel atmosphere, after the sniper has been fired the soundtrack suddenly stops which creates the shock factor for the audience and builds up the atmosphere for the protagonist that although he has been wounded the sound has been changed into angel and gentle music in order to show the fall of innocence of the father’s son allowing sympathy and depression for the audience to be built on. Also our group has also researched on the imacs lots of different diegetic sounds in order to make the scenes more effective and allow better change in mood for the audience. For example during our research our group had found a copyright free website that allowed us to use the following sounds in order to build the scene’s intensions and composition. The heart beat is used as a stereotypical sounds for changing in the atmosphere that the heart beat symbolises as the human mind and fear which can create confusion and horror for the audience. This can also threaten the genre of our media product that some horror genres also use the diegetic heart beat in order to create a change in the environment and mood of the audience. Another sound used is the door that during the POV this has helped us to represent the protagonist’s fear and emotions about the location he feels trapped and can’t escape from the terrifying horror the building possess. This also links to one of the aspects of the psychological sub genre of 2 or more characters preying upon one another’s minds, decepting mind games, trying to get each other’s mental ability. This is a typical convention used for typical psychological thriller such as Inception to make the contrast between the protagonist/antagonist into an epic, climatic narrative allowing to build the true storyline of the protagonist to build and reflect on the audience. The next sound that we have used is the footsteps followed by the electrifying sounds and screeching sounds which has also helped to changed different meanings for different scene allowing to build the congruity of our media product. This has shown that our group has used allot of ICT and technology by developing and using new skills for the imac by considering new sounds and techniques in order to build a soundtrack that links to the themes of the sub genre such as the backstory, stream of consciousness, realism, perception, purpose/exsistance and the identity of the characters.
During our filming our group did experience problems which has forced us to consider new solutions and forms in order to create the narrative on a different scale. The first problem that our group had faced was that some scenes were too complicated due to the camera being our of focus and to much hand held movement which made some scene look very abstract and unstable, for example during the walking scene, the camera was to show a compositions of three still shots but however due to time management and difficult framing our group had decided on a more simplistic and less complex shot by using a low angle to make the building more powerful and stronger containing mystery and secrets that both the protagonist/antagonist don't know. The camera shot has made the location seem very unusual and a place of torture and misery. Also our group had decided that during the storyboard our group was to use during the protagonist’s scene a POV shot of him as he looks and reads the book on the desk but after hearing a sound a medium shot is used to show him turning 180 degree in understand to show him investigating the whereabouts of the strange presence of the sound. But however our group felt that a side angle of the book would be better because including this type of shot would make the camera movement more abstract and unstable which can give the impression to the audience that the media product contain little quality and not enough detail. This also effects the atmosphere and meaning of the shots eventually effecting the narrative for the audience. The side angle also helps to contain mystery and confusing the audience of the events that are happening in the current location. The next problem for our group on filming is the problems between the contrast of light and dark that during our planning our group had decided to film on a low light scene because too much light would effect the element of darkness and it wouldn’t create an emotionless and depressing background. Whereas if it was too dark, this would give clear structure and wouldn't show the characters and objects making it too complicated and out of focus for the audience. Some days we believed had too much darkness/ light so therefore we need to re schedule different days in order to maintain the ability of the light/dark contrast, this had made out managing skills abit less formal and co ordination wasn't as structures since the preliminary task. And the final problem that our group had experienced was that during filming and editing we have gone over the OCR’s initial brief for the opening sequence of being a maximum of 2 minutes instead our group has gone over the limit and made over a 3 minute sequence. Our group felt that just 2 minutes wouldn't create enough of a emotional and climatic climax which would enable us build the atmosphere. Our group had also felt that the film had stuck to the aspects of the psychological thriller by building on the perception of the human mind and develop the protagonist’s personality and purpose on the location of our media product. Overall the problems of the filming process has made it more complicated for us to re schedule and consider developing the narrative and congruity of our media product which has made us changed our shots and angles in order to make easier and still build similar meaning for our media product.
Since our preliminary task I have learnt how to acquire and do shots that build a typical opening sequence such as shot/reverse shot, match on action and the 180 degree rule this has helped me to acquire the skills of form and structure. This has also gave me basic camera skills to build the congruity of the footage and to help me become more confident for future filming processes for the main task in order to record more complex and harder shots such as the side angles, over the shoulder shot, long shot and medium shot. The preliminary task has given me more confidence and improved knowledge of the camera which has helped me to consider the composition of different variety of camera angle/shots. This has also helped me to extend my knowledge of technologies, since the preliminary task I have learnt how to use i Macs and more knowledge on the hand held camera. The I Macs has helped me to use basic editing techniques such as cross cutting and building scenes also cutting and trimming scenes that would be made more shorter and more concise which has helped us to consider the structure and form of our footage. The preliminary task has also helped me to extend my planning and research for the shot list that during research I have considered the meaning and technical codes for particular shots such as using shot/reverse shot to show connection ship and links between the two main characters. The preliminary task has also helped me to be more stronger with my computer skills, as although I haven’t done ICT A level I gain more confidence and courage to build my media technical aspects in order to construct and create new opening media products, this will help me in future for A2 and it’s also helped me for my main task as well.
During the research and planning for our main task our group’s contribution and encouragement has improved such as during research on the preliminary task our group has learnt how to learn about the meaning, definition and style of each of the three shots. Whereas the genre research has helped us to consider lost of elements developing our knowledge over the thriller genre such as the technological codes, mise en scene, clothing and shot list. During our genre research our group has learnt case studies directors such as Alfred Hitchcock who built and developed the thriller genre in different variety of forms, composition and technical aspect, while considering the representational conventions for the audience. Our group has also learnt lots of new analysis techniques for current media products that while researching and analysis current media products such as Face off our group has learnt to consider the narrative and mise en scene while relating to the narrative theory of Todorov. This has helped us to identify and acquire the conventions from the genre so our group can apply and consider using similar techniques which has developed our media product and our technological skills for editing and the camerawork on the iMacs in the college. During research this has also helped to develop my vocabulary and knowledge over media studies which can help me during A2 and future assignments. The research has also made me more precise and confident on my writing skills. Since the preliminary task I have only learnt few new words and sentences as the main task was developing progress this has helped to expand my knowledge and acquire new skills that I needed in order to construct and edit the media product that our group has constructed. The locations has also helped our group to expand our ideas and scale by considering bigger and wider environment such as sub urbanised areas to allow better variety of atmospheres and emotions for the audience. Since the preliminary task, the locations have been restricted making it myself manage the landscape and mise en scene for the media product. But however the main task has helped me to become more imaginative, creative and expanding new ideas for bigger atmospheres. During storyboards the main task has helped our group to combine and discuss ideas in order to acquire structure and develop out teamwork and dedication. Since the preliminary task, the storyboards has separated ideas making us work together less and not acquire any potential for combing our ideas in order to create high potential and meaning. Whereas the main task has helped me to allow to give myself freedom of speech allowing to become more emotive and strong about the ideas and thoughts about our narrative for the media product. This will also help me during A2 as we continue to explore the use of conventions allowing me to consider new designs and ideas for future media products. Also during clothing and props this has helped our group to consider the roles and purpose of the protagonist/antagonist which has helped developed our knowledge and ideas about representational codes. During the preliminary task not many representational codes were shown but however as the main task has developed its helped me to show more variety of outputs for representation and social groups allowing me to expand and create depth of field for my thoughts and concentration for media studies. And finally the shot list has mostly extend my camera work skills and techniques allowing me to experiment and show different ways of framing and montage. From the preliminary task the three shots: shot/reverse shot, 180 degree rule and match on action have helped us to construct a simplistic and concise opening sequence. But however during the main task I have constructed my own structure and forms of the media product by including new and precise camera angle/shots by researching into current media products. The research has also helped me to think about what different meanings are created from different angles/shots. This has also helped me to consider more opportunities and solutions to the scenes. During the main task, I have increased my depth of field for camerawork by learning and applying new camera techniques such as side angles, over the shoulder, tracking shot and long/medium/close ups. So overall my planning has helped me to show lots more new skills and knowledge over the subject and media product. This will help my goals and achievements when our group develops to A2, this will help prepare us and construct bigger and more complex media products which helps widen our range of vocabulary, knowledge, composition, congruity and to learn more studies of current directors and theorists such as developing our ideas from Todorov’s theory about narrative on equilibrium and it progressing develops into disequilibrium which links to the contrast of the protagonist and the antagonist about media studies and the technical aspects.
During our filming and editing our group during the main task has learnt new filters and techniques in order to build technicality and composition for our media product. For our filming I have learnt how to use equipment more effectively and resourceful such as the tripod and camera that I have learned how to apply and create different depths of field giving myself different distant of shots and camera angle to acquire high factual detail and to become more expressive through the use of technical codes and aspects based on current media products such as Face off and The Dark knight. It’s also improved our development and time management over the media product allowing us to develop more ideas and conventions of the thriller genre. During the filming process, I have learned how to control and have learned how to use the equipment more effectively since the preliminary task allowing myself to experiment and begin initial ideas while considering the forms of media. Also during our editing our group’s knowledge for new technologies has been enhanced allowing us to try out new techniques that allows better experimentation and composition of shots/angles. By learning new techniques such as colour filters of dreamscape and colour differentiation of pink and red also experimenting the contrast of light and dark which allows us to show representation through light and dark atmospheres allowing us to build and create inspiration. This has also enhanced our psychological hybrid thriller by including conventions based on other media products such as Face off and the Dark knight. And our group has also learnt to be more expressive and enthusiastic about combining ideas and solutions allowing us to overcome challenges and developments allowing us to prevent any misshapenness. Since the preliminary task our group has had problems with managing the structure of our media product but however since the preliminary task our knowledge, ideas and thoughts have been expanded which has allowed us to be very subjective and to acquire the skills necessary for future projects such as in A2.
So overall although our media product has included lots of conventions of the typical thriller genre such as the use of claustrophobic conventions and the use of darkness. This has helped us to makes our media product fit into the genre showing similar connections and similarities. But however during our audience feedback most of the audience members believe that the media product contained more horror aspects such as including explicit gore/ violence, our group has decided not to include any dialogue because our group wanted to created a atmosphere full of surprises and tension of the narrative. This would make the media product more climatic and atmospheric allowing us to build emotions and feelings on our target audience. But however scenes such as the burning scene, death scene, heart beat scene have challenged the initial sub genre that our group wants for the target audience which is the psychological thriller sub genre. During our main task we have developed and gain new abilities such as new editing techniques for colour filters and cross cutting form the soft ware i movie on the i macs. The preliminary task has helped us to gain basic skills for research and planning showing us to consider management and developing our initial ideas. Our group has felt that our media product is very successful to sticking to the OCR’s criteria but however the horror aspects has challenged the aspects making it harder and effecting the narrative and structure of the psychological sub genre. Unconsciousness: State of mind has received allot of positive reviews about how it confuses allot of people and its too psychologically challenging. Also our group believes that our group can receive global distribution similar to media products such as Face off and the Dark knight from big media institutions such as Warner Brothers and Paramount pictures. But however in order top achieve high potential, the mise en scene of our media product must be more highly developed and show different technological codes allowing more supernatural elements to be shown and represented. Our skills and knowledge for the camera has definitely improved and acquired new vocabulary and techniques allowing us better experimenting and consideration for the technical conventions for the thriller genre. Since the preliminary task, our group has only learned three basic shots which are match on action, 180 degree rule and shot/reverse shot whereas the main task has allowed us to use a bigger variety of shots such as side angle, establishing shot, and over the shoulder shot. The equipment and props have also been created in a greater variety allowing us to create different representational meanings and conventions for the thriller genre, foe example the cigarette lighter is used to represent a tool for a stereotypical smoker and to create realism for the target audience allowing us to make connections between the audience and the media product. And finally our representation of social groups has also been considered because of the use of gender, age, nationality and stereotypical groups which create more variety and better roles for the actors.
