1. Dr. Sandra Trejos is a Professor of Economics at Clarion University of Pennsylvania and a Costa
Rican native. She has been part of the Clarion University Faculty since 2004 where she received
tenure and promotion to full professorshipin 2009. She is a member of the International Who’s
Who Historical Society, Phi Eta Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, and Beta Gamma Sigma. Dr. Trejos is a 2009
and 2010 Who’s Who in America, and a 2010-2011 Who’s Who of AmericanWomen. She previously
taught at the University of Costa Rica, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis,and the
University of South Dakota. Nationally, Dr. Trejos received the Outstanding Latina Faculty:
Service/Teachingin Higher Education Award at the 2014 American Association of Hispanics in
Higher Education (A.A.H.H.E) Conference in Costa Mesa, California.
She is fluent in Spanish and English, and holds a diploma in Frenchlanguage. She earned the
2009 Clarion University Outstanding Faculty Equity Award, and she has also been awarded
research awards by the College of Business and several teaching awardsfrom different
organizations throughout the years. She earned the 2010 Clarion University Faculty of the Year
award at the Student-Athlete Luncheon.
At the university-level,she was a member of Faculty Senate from 2008 to 2011, Chair of both the
Sabbatical-Leave Committee and the General Education Council for two terms, and the Study
Abroad Coordinator for the University from 2005 to 2008. She has also been an active member of
the Presidential Commissionon the Status of Women and a Board member of the former University
Theater Council. She is currently part of the Women and Gender StudiesCouncil.
Dr. Trejos has been the founding advisor of three clubs: the Study Abroad Club, which she advised
for five years, the Clarion University Model United Nations (C.U.M.U.N.) Club, which took off in
2013, and the Latino club, S.A.L.S.A which started in 2014. She has also been advising the
Economics club, P.E.A.C.E. for ten years.
Dr. Trejos implementsinnovative methods in her teaching,and enjoys mixing them to satisfy the
different learning styles of her students. For instance, she has used the student response system
(clickers) to engage students actively in critical thinking questions in the principles of economics
classes, group wikis in her online teaching, and multimedia and discussion while covering current
events,in addition to lecturing.She led the first Clarion in Costa Rica experience last Summer 2014,
a course that provided a better understanding of the Costa Rican society, through lectures, visits to
museums and art performances,firms, government agencies,and ecological trips. Furthermore, she
has sponsored many students for their undergraduate research. Under her mentorship, students
have presented at both the Midwest Economics Association, where few studentsare competitively
selected, and at the Pennsylvania Economic Association.
In the economics profession, she has worked with the American Society of Hispanic Economists,
officially recognized by the American Economic Association as one of the affiliated organizations of
the Allied Social Science Association (A.S.S.A.), and the Pennsylvania Economic Association of
which she was the 2011-2012 Vice-President of Publicity, the 2012-013 Vice-president of Program
and Proceedingsand the 2013-2014 President Designate.She is currently the president of such
professional organization.
Dr. Trejos has received multiple grants towardsresearch and professional development at both the
college and the university levelsthroughout the years, and was the principal investigator for a grant
by the Pennsylvania System of Higher Education. She is an active reviewer for different publication
outlets and presents at conferences nationally and internationally.She has also served as external
reviewer for promotion purposes of colleaguesin the field,at other institutions of higher education.
She has done work for Pearson Publishing,and published scholarly work in several peer-reviewed
journals in the fields of economic education (as inspired by classroom-based research),
international economics, and economic development. She has recentlystarted doing research in the
field of happiness economics.
2. Dr. Trejos has served as judge for the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science (P.J.A.S) for six years
at both the regional and state levels, and she was a member of the Clarion University Campus
Ministry Board for seven years. Dr. Trejos is married to Dr. Gustavo Barboza and they have four
daughtersof ages twenty-one, nineteen,sixteen, and eleven. She enjoysspending time with her
family and friends, listening to music, being outdoors, and planting and taking care of flowers.
