  1. February Update February 2023 Welcome to the February Newsletter February Update Page 1 View our upcoming courses from page 7. It is really great that Apprenticeships are being given an increasingly higher profile. New government regulation requires schools to ensure that students have the opportunity to hear about apprenticeships regularly as they progress through school. As a result, SBC Training is being invited to talk to more year groups in local schools. In February we celebrated National Apprenticeship Week and were part of the All About Apprenticeships event at the Shrewsbury Town Football Stadium. A little more about that later. We are now in to our campaign to register apprenticeship opportunities for this year’s school and college leavers so do get in touch if you feel you can benefit from a keen extra pair of hands. Featured In this newsletter: • New partnership lays the foundations for plastering • National Apprenticeship Week • Apprenticeship Tips and Hints • Business Workshops and Construction “Have a Go” event success! • Course Dates 2023
  2. February Update Page 2 New partnership lays the foundations for plastering SBC Training is really excited to have partnered with V&D Interiors to offer apprenticeships in plastering. V&D Interiors is a specialist drylining and exteriors contractor that delivers large complex projects across the Midlands, North West and Yorkshire and has become one of the UK’s leading drylining contractors with over 150 operatives across three regional sites. Paul Nightingale of V&D Interiors said “We are aware that there is a serious skills shortage in the industry so we decided to develop our own training centre. Based in Dawley Bank, Telford the facility has been delivering short courses and is now ready to progress to offer full apprenticeships. The apprentices will be employed by V&D Interiors and attend for skills training guided by SBC Training” Colin Thaw MD of SBC Training said “This is a very important step for the construction sector in this area, as previously Dudley was the nearest training centre for plastering. We have been working with the CITB and V&D Interiors to support its development and are looking forward to welcoming the first cohorts of apprentices this year, with intakes planned for May and September.”
  3. February Update Page 3 National Apprenticeship Week & All About Apprenticeships This year's National Apprenticeship Week was held from February 6th through February 12th. We had an incredible response from our apprentices, businesses, and the media to help publicise apprenticeships, and we would like to extend our thanks; all the videos were fantastic. We have some exceptional apprentices and employers! Amanda Carpenter was invited to speak to several media outlets about how apprenticeships benefit both young people and employers. She was shining a spotlight on apprenticeships and celebrating their successes, as well as raising awareness of the many different pathways available. Here is a link to her podcast produced with ROUS+ https://bit.ly/3jUpKRB. Our BDOs Emily Challender and Colin Preece, were also out and about that week talking to the next generation of apprentices. Colin spoke at The Priory School in Shrewsbury and Sir John Talbot’s in Whitchurch, whilst Emily represented SBC Training at The Marches School careers fair. Thank you very much to the schools for hosting us! We were also at the All About Apprenticeships Event, which was organised by MSPN and held at Shrewsbury Football ground; we had a fantastic turnout at our stand. We spoke with so many people during the event, and hope to see you all after you finish school and college. We were joined on our stand by Paul Nightingale from V and D Interiors. We will be collaborating with V and D to provide plastering apprenticeships from summer. We hope you had a good time, Paul! Visitors may have noticed two huge balloons at our stand. This year is our 40th birthday, and to celebrate, we held a competition in which visitors to our stand could win an SBC Training party bag containing an Amazon voucher, sweets, and other party bag essentials. Marley, who currently attends Shrewsbury Sixth Form, was the lucky winner; congratulations, Marley!

  5. February Update Page 5 Apprenticeship Tips and Hints – Apprenticeships are a Partnership Apprenticeships are a Partnership Employer, Apprentice, Training Provider; this is such an important partnership and all must work together to have the maximum impact. If employer and training provider are working in isolation then the programme will be disjointed and confusing for the apprentice. The ideal scenario is the employer working in conjunction with the training provider to plan and co-ordinate the learning and experience, with the apprentice at the heart of the programme. Communication and co-operation are key to successfully developing a skilled and motivated employee. Business Workshops and Construction “Have a Go” event success! This month, we hosted events for potential apprentices to learn more about two sectors we offer apprenticeships in. We held a Business sector workshop for people to come and learn more about apprenticeships in Business Administration, Customer Service, Digital Marketing, Finance, and Digital Support, and we held a Construction “Have a Go Day” for carpentry, bricklaying and electrical trades. At the Business workshops attendees were able to talk to the trainers who deliver the apprenticeships to learn more about the apprenticeships, what they entail, and future progression once the apprenticeship is completed. The construction "Have a Go" day, enabled attendees to participate in hands-on activities. They were able to practice laying bricks, have a go at some carpentry, as well as speaking with the trainers who deliver the apprenticeships. At both events they met the head of recruitment, who spoke with them about the process of applying for an apprenticeship, where to find them advertised online, our vacancies, how to find potential employers and joining our talent pool. We had some construction naturals in the group and we are now keen to recruit more employers who will benefit from having these great youngsters as apprentices.
