WORKPLACE OH&S
INDUCTION
Welcome!
Welcome new and old workers!
We are happy to have you on board our friendly team.
This presentation has been produced to help make you feel
comfortable in our workplace.
We want to ensure all of our new and old employees are
up-to-date with OH&S policies.
What is expected of you
By now your role in our team and your work duties should
have been established. If you are unclear on any of this,
please speak to your team leader or manager. Don’t
hesitate to ask questions.
Most importantly, we expect that everyone working for us
abides by the rules of the workplace and follows the health
and safety policies at all times. We do our best to ensure
that you all feel safe when you come to work but it is also
the duty of the employees to maintain a safe environment
and follow proper procedure to further ensure the safety of
you and others around you.
Employees responsibilities
• Obey all reasonable instructions.
• Follow the safe procedures for doing your job.
• Use any equipment (including personal protective equipment)
safely and correctly.
• Not put yourself or your co-workers at risk.
• Report hazards, incidents or near misses.
• Work with your employer and co-workers to improve work
health and safety at your workplace.
Employees rights
• Work in a safe workplace
• Work in a safe manner
• Ask questions and raise concerns about work health and
safety
• Get information, be supervised and trained
• Be involved in work health and safety
Employers responsibilities
• Properly orientate, train and supervise staff to ensure safe work practices are
understood and followed by all employees.
• Consult with all employees, including YW, about decisions that will affect safety in
the workplace.
• Provide suitable personal protective equipment (PPE) to make sure workers can
do their job safely and train workers how to use PPE correctly.
• Regularly check WHS systems and procedures to make sure that workers are
adequately protected from workplace hazards.
• Provide adequate facilities for the welfare of employees. This covers everything
from providing suitable toilet facilities to conducting risk assessments on premises
and procedures.
• Be aware of employers’ legal obligations under the TAS Work Health and Safety
Act and meet those obligations in full.
Emergency evacuation plan
In case of fire or emergency, our evacuation plan is as follows:
• Immediately stop whatever it is you are doing. Do not continue work
and do not try and collect your personal belongings.
• Leave the building via one of the designated safe exits. There are
many maps around the floor detailing where all of these exits are.
• Meet at our designated area outside of the building so that we can do
a head count and ensure everyone is safe.
• Do not leave the designated area, even once you are outside of the
building (unless you are instructed to do so from Aileen or a safety
official).
• Follow further instructions from Aileen (manager and safety
evacuation leader).
OHS Representative
The OH&S representative for our workplace is Jessica
Chambers. She has worked in this position for the past 8
years and has an extensive amount of experience and
knowledge.
If you have any concerns or suggestions that you would
like to express, please contact her on 123 456 789 or you
can email her at: jessica.chambers@ohs.org.au
Safety hazards to look out for
• Slippery floors
• Open cabinets/drawers
• Obstructed paths
• Messy cords and cables on the ground
• Headaches/eye strain
• Sore wrist from overuse or repetitive activity
• Back or neck pain
• Stress
Safe work procedures
It is important that you follow safe work procedures at all time to ensure
your own health and safety.
• Posture must always be straight. There are signs in each room which
outline correct posture and how to adjust your chair and other
surroundings to ensure you are sitting correctly.
• Adequate breaks and stretches are a must. Take a break once every
half an hour to an hour to walk around and stretch your legs.
• Adequate eye breaks are also a must. Look away from your screen
every ten minutes for a minute or two before returning back to work.
• When lifting heavy equipment, ensure you are following the correct
lifting procedure (knees bent, straight back). If it looks too heavy, ask
someone else to help.
Healthy work environment
• Suitable lighting (Blinds open during the day, lights on during
evening work)
• Temperature is right (AC on during Summer and heater on
during Winter). Usually we aim for 18 – 20 degrees Celsius.
• Friendly attitude and communication between employees at all
times. This is a bully-free zone and any kind of intolerance,
hatred or harassment of others won’t be accepted. If you feel
like this is happening towards you or someone else, please
report it immediately to your team leader.
• If you feel that the environment is not following a healthy
procedure e.g. not enough adequate lighting, temperature is
too hot or too cold, report this immediately to your team leader.
What to do in the case of an accident
or emergency
• If you witness or are victim to an injury or accident, call 000 if
you or someone else is badly injured.
• There is a first aid kit in every room in our building. They are
located in a clearly marked cabinet.
• Locate your OHS representative and inform them of the
emergency and/or accident.
• Fill out a report form and give it to your supervisor to be lodged
to the health and safety organization.
• If you see a safety hazard or anyone else following incorrect
procedures, report this immediately to your team leader or
supervisor.
Safety hazard symbols and signs:
Maintaining the health and safety of
our workplace
We treat the safety of our employees with the upmost importance.
We regularly ensure all first aid supplies are up-to-date and available at
all times.
We touch base with the health and safety organization once a month
and they regularly perform routine checks of our building and facility.
OH&S is a key topic at staff meetings which are held once a fortnight
and we welcome the opinion and feedback of our employees on this
topic and subject.
You are welcome to come directly to any one of the team leaders,
supervisors or managers on this floor with any suggestions you may
have to help improve our current workplace procedure and standards.
