The Motivation / What is UX?
UX, or user experience, is the practice of developing
software, web sites, web portals and mobile apps
which is usable by design.
It includes disciplines such as:
- Interface
- Architecture
- Look and feel
- Behaviour
- Content
- Functionality

In an ideal world, UX is interwoven into the design
and development process as a fundamental
practice.
In the real world, UX is often ignored until a
problem makes it impossible to ignore.
Often this can lead to a vicious circle.

Eye tracking measures where a user is looking as
they undertake a task.
Watching a user’s eyes move can give us an
objective insight into:

How easy a piece of software, web site or web
app is to us

-

And more importantly, how to improve it

Eye tracking can give us insights that talking to
users alone would not.
For example:
More women notice an advert with a pretty model
Whereas more men just notice the pretty model
It’s not just a pretty face – readers pay more
attention to a product if the model is looking at it too

read, understand, work and learn is not new.
Nor is looking at eye movements to give insight into
thought.
Experimental psychologists began studying eye
movements during the 1800s.

How Eye Tracking Works / Hardware
The commonest technique uses near-infrared
light, and measures the angle of light reflected by
the eye.
This angle can then be used to calculate where the
eye is currently looking.
Other techniques include image processing web or
video camera images to estimate eye position but
these are generally less accurate.

How Eye Tracking Works / Hardware
Eye tracking glasses are available for
understanding mobile behaviour and
perception, for example how shoppers behave. The
newest generations allow real-time viewing.
Eye trackers will typically produce 15-120 rows of
data per second. 30-60 rows of data is adequate
for most commercial applications.
This data must then be interpreted

How Eye Tracking Works / Software
The interpretation software is a significant
investment in the eye tracking setup.
There are off the shelf packages, which will
produce picture visualisations, videos and statistics
(some examples of these later).
For research or specialist applications, bespoke
software development is often used.

Watching a user’s eyes move can give us an objective insight into: - How easy a piece of software, web site or web app is to us - And more importantly, how to improve it What are your Users Thinking? 06/11/2013 13

  • 22. How Eye Tracking Works / Hardware The commonest technique uses near-infrared light, and measures the angle of light reflected by the eye. This angle can then be used to calculate where the eye is currently looking. Other techniques include image processing web or video camera images to estimate eye position but these are generally less accurate. What are your Users Thinking? 06/11/2013 22
  • 23. How Eye Tracking Works / Hardware Eye tracking glasses are available for understanding mobile behaviour and perception, for example how shoppers behave. The newest generations allow real-time viewing. Eye trackers will typically produce 15-120 rows of data per second. 30-60 rows of data is adequate for most commercial applications.   • 24. How Eye Tracking Works / Software The interpretation software is a significant investment in the eye tracking setup. There are off the shelf packages, which will produce picture visualisations, videos and statistics (some examples of these later). How UX Works / Collecting Data Data collection usually involves: - Pre-screening participants – people with certain conditions cannot be eye tracked - Interviewing participants before, after or both - Eye tracking the user, usually whilst undertaking specific tasks.
