The hub aims to provide students with hands­on training in
areas such as IT networking, digital forensics and security
operations, in order to increase the pool of trained cyber
security specialists.

SINGAPORE: To increase the pool of trained cyber security
specialists, an IT security and forensics hub has been set up at
Temasek Polytechnic.
The hub, a new facility at Temasek Polytechnic’s (TP) School of
Informatics & IT, was launched on Monday (Jul 27) by Minister for
Communications and Information and Minister­in­charge of Cyber
Security Yaacob Ibrahim.
Dr Yaacob said the opening of the hub was timely, as it will help to
nurture more professionals to support a growing cybersecurity
industry. He added that cybersecurity is taken very seriously in
Singapore, given the increase in connectivity, and as there are
various degrees of cyber crimes it is important to have strong
defences.
"There will be a need to produce a sufficient pool of cyber security
professionals to support a growing cyber security industry," said Dr
Yaacob. "Practitioners will also need to upgrade their skills to deal
with threats of growing sophistication. And this is an area where the
institutes of higher learning, such as our polytechnics and
university, play a very important role."
HANDS­ON TRAINING
Students will receive practical hands­on training in areas such as IT
networking, digital forensics and security operations. They will also
benefit from the mentorship of industry experts.

For instance, Temasek Polytechnic has established two Security
Operations Centres in collaboration with IBM and RSA. Senior
students from the Cyber & Digital Security and Digital Forensics
diploma courses will work alongside IBM professionals on security
projects. The first batch of interns started work at the TP­IBM
Security Operations Centre on Jul 6 to take on various roles, such
as alert analysts or incident responders.
"A major project group upstairs were working with the router and a
Raspberry Pi," said 19­year­old Tanujah Swaminathan, a Year 3
student at Temasek Polytechnic. "Raspberry Pi is a small
computer, a mini computer. When they plug in the router with the
access point, there was a connection with the servers in China with
some malware going on with the Raspberry Pi. So all of us got
really excited to experience this real­life thing."
At the same time, the TP­RSA Security Operations Centre will
provide students with the opportunity to work in an environment
that is equipped with advanced technologies in IT security and
analytics.
Said Deputy Director of Capability & Industry Development at the
School of Informatics & IT Oh Chin Lock: "Apart from having a
classroom environment, this hub actually makes it a really
operational environment. So students are dealing with real issues,
monitoring real networks, and they are dealing with real customers
as well."
TP takes in about 100 students per year in its Cyber & Digital
Security and Digital Forensics courses. The Cyber & Digital
Security course takes in 50 to 60 students per year, while the
Digital Forensics course takes in 40 to 50 per year.
From October, TP will also be offering a Specialist Diploma in
Information Security & Forensics for working adults. Those
undergoing the course will be trained to investigate and manage
security incidents.
