caring adults for guidance

competence, usefulness,
belonging, and influence, there
by building self-esteem.
Our Mission is the Movement’s
Reason of Being
To inspire and enable all young people,
especially those from disadvantaged
circumstances, to realize their
full potential as productive,
responsible, and caring citizens.

Boys & Girls Club
Executive Director
Dr. Evies O. Cranford
Dr. Evies Cranford is definitely a man of action
and has a long and distinguished history in the
field of education. Cranford's professional career
in education spans 39 years across four states in
the U.S. He began as a science teacher in the
Edna Public Schools in Edna, Texas in 1962.
Over the next 8 years he was elevated to science
department chair, was active in the science
organization across the State of Texas, helped to
organize the first multi-racial teen center and was
involved in the first desegregation effort, serving
as science teacher and department chair at the
former White High School. He also found time to
coach sports, sponsor clubs, and direct dramatic
productions.
Boys & Girls Club Programs
• About Our Programs
– Boys & Girls clubs of America’s national programs
have taken members from the Clubhouse to the
White House; from the games room to the corporate
boardroom; from the high school orchestra to
Carnegie Hall.
– Boys & Girls Clubs has a lineup of tested and proven
nationally recognized programs that address today’s
most pressing youth issues, teaching young people
the skills they need to succeed in life.
Boys & Girls Programs
Programs at the Boys & Girls Club are built
around specific core areas.
• Character and Leadership Development
• Education and Career Development
• Health and Life Skills
• The Arts
• Sports, Fitness, and Recreation
Character & Leadership
The main focus of this program is to help youth become
responsible caring citizens and acquire skills for
participating in the democratic process. They also develop
leadership skills and provide opportunities for planning,
decision-making, contributing to Club and community, and
celebrating our national heritage.
Programs include:
Club Buddies
Boys and Girls Scouts of America
Prison Prevention
TEENSupreme Keystone Club
TORCH Club (ages 11-13)
A Character & Leadership Program
TEENSupreme Keystone Club
Keystone Clubs are chartered small
group leadership development clubs
for young people ages 14-18.
Keystoners elect officers, choose their
own activities and plan and implement
community service projects. A
national charter entitles a Keystone
Club to participate in regional and
national Keystone conferences. The
TEENSupreme Keystone Club
program is sponsored by the
Taco Bell Foundation.
A Character & Leadership Program
Club Buddies
What is Club Buddies?
Club Buddies is a collaborative effort between Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sedgwick
County and Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central Kansas. The Club Buddies program
partners carefully screened adult volunteers from Big Brothers Big Sisters with members
of the Boys & Girls Clubs.
Club Buddies exists to aid children who need the friendship of a special adult in their lives
- a Big Buddy. Little Buddies are from 6 - 17 years old and come from all social, financial
and ethnic backgrounds. Some of these children are having trouble at home or at school.
For others, the biggest problem is interacting with others in a group setting. This
partnership takes place on site at one of these Boys & Girls Club sites:
21st & Grove Club
Oaklawn Club
Holy Savior Academy
Education and Career
This program helps youth create aspirations for the
future, providing opportunities for career
exploration and educational enhancement.
Programs include:
Targeted Outreach Program
Agri-Science/Agri-Business
Rotary Club (Public Speaking)
Chess Club
Club Tech/Core Tech
An Education & Career Program
Targeted Outreach Program
Boys & Girls Clubs of South Central
Kansas saw a need in Sedgwick County
for an outreach program for those youth
that are suspended, expelled, drop-outs,
or need assistance in career planning.
Targeted Outreach Program (for high-
risk youth) began in September 1997.
This program is designed to help assist
the schools, Juvenile justice system, and
other adolescent agencies through out
Sedgwick County. This program will
accept those youth that can not be
placed in other programs due to the
nature of their offense.
An Education & Career Program
Power Hour
• Power is an educational
enhancement program that has
three (3) “circuits”:
– Educational enrichment activities
in the form of Power Pages
– Help with homework
– Tutoring
Although the goals of all three (3)
programs are the same -- to help
members turn on the power of
success in school – each one is
different.
Health & Life Skills Programs
These initiatives help youth achieve and
maintain healthy, active lifestyles.
Programs include:
Kids Kitchen
Passport to Manhood
Risk Reduction
Sight for Students
A Health & Life Skills Program
The Kids Kitchen
Many of our members depend
on the nutritious meals that are
served on site everyday. Last
year, approximately 2,800 kids
were fed at the Boys & Girls
Club of South Central Kansas.
The Arts
This programs help young people enhance
self-expression and creativity, develop
multicultural appreciation, provide exposure
to and develop skill in crafts and visual,
performing and literary arts.
Programs include:
Americorps/Artscorps
An Arts Program
Americorps/ArtsCorps
Children learn in different ways and
that’s where ArtsCorps comes in.
ArtsCorps uses the arts to teach,
making learning fun, stimulating,
challenging – while encouraging
creativity and gaining cultural
exposure. The learning process
involves the children, is energetic,
and allows the children to see, do,
and tell. They learn team-work, after
all, it takes a village to raise a child,
team-work creates a village to
increase learning skills.
Sports, Fitness, & Recreation
This program helps to develop fitness, a
positive use of leisure time, reduction of
stress, appreciation for the environment,
and social and interpersonal skills.
Programs include:
Young Stallions
Collaboration with youth Sports League
Basketball Team
Boxing Program
A Sports, Fitness, & Recreation
Program
Boys & Girls Club Basketball Team
Being involved in sports builds the body and character. Being a team player and
sportsmanship are valuable traits to have in today’s society. Sports are a positive
use of leisure time, and a reduction in stress. Children are able to build social
and interpersonal skills also.
Why the Boys & Girls Club is
Special
Four key characteristics define the essence
of a Boys & Girls Club. All are critical in
exerting positive impact on the life of a child:
1. Dedicated Youth Facility
2. Open Daily
3. A Professional Staff
4. Available and Affordable to All Youth
An Ounce of Prevention
• It takes money to run a Boys & Girls Club
– on average, about $200 per youth per
year. But consider the alternative; keeping
a young adult in jail costs taxpayers
anywhere from $25,000 to $75,000 per
year. Boys & Girls Clubs – a proven
delinquency prevention program – are
one of the bust bargains in America.
Your Support Means All The
Difference
Throughout our history, we have always held a special
concern for children from disadvantaged circumstances.
Our comprehensive youth development programs and
services provide young people with the skills to overcome
their challenges and become responsible citizens and
leaders.
Your investment in Boys & Girls Clubs of America helps
guarantee a strong future for our young people and our
nation. We invite you to invest in America's future. The
choice is yours, but the rewards are shared by everyone --
especially the children who represent America's future.
