What is Research?
Research is defined as the creation
of new knowledge or the use of
existing knowledge in a new and
creative way so as to generate new
concepts, methodologies and
understandings.
What is Research Paper?
A research paper is a piece of academic
writing that provides analysis,
interpretation, and argument based on
in-depth independent research.
Research papers are similar
to academic essays, but they are
usually longer and more detailed
assignments, designed to assess not
only your writing skills but also your
skills in scholarly research.
1. KNOW the
focus of your
paper.
What? Why?
When?
2. READ related
works
&
COLLECT data.

 Title :
 To summarize the main idea or ideas of your study.
A good title contains the fewest possible words needed
to adequately describe the content and purpose of your
research paper.
Structure of a Research Paper
 Abstract :
To briefly introduce the reader to the aims of
the study, methodology and findings.
It contains about 150- to 250-word paragraph.
Structure of a Research Paper
 Introduction :
 To state a clear overall purpose for the study, often
framed in a discussion of the need of the research is
satisfying.
 To define the research question(s) of the study.
 To give a very brief background of relevant theory and
practice for your topic.
Structure of a Research Paper
 Literature Review:
 To summarize what conclusions have been reached in
the research literature and whether different writers
agree or not.
 To highlight main issue and controversies around the
problem.
Structure of a Research Paper
 Methodology :
 To demonstrate that you are aware of the research
methods used to study this topic.
 To explain and justify the method of data collection
and analysis.
Structure of a Research Paper
 Experimental setup:
 In this section, you describe how the experiment was
done and summarize the data taken.
 One typically describes the instruments and detectors
used in this section.
 Describe the procedure followed to collect the data.
Structure of a Research Paper
Data Collection :
 This is where you include the date you took the data.
 Put the data in tabular form if appropriate.
 This section and the Experimental Setup sections can
be combined for short papers
Structure of a Research Paper
Data Analysis :
 In this section, you use the theory developed in the
introduction to analyze the data.
Structure of a Research Paper
 Result :
 To present the findings of your research in an
orderly manner , using heading planned in your
methodology or heading arising from patterns
found in research.
Structure of a Research Paper
 Discussion :
To comment on the trends/findings and show
your understanding of what your data suggests.
To highlight anything unexpected that came up.
Structure of a Research Paper
 Conclusion :
To sum up your findings and highlight the
significance of the outcomes of your study.
To discuss the limitations of your study and
indicate where further research is needed.
Structure of a Research Paper
 Acknowledgments :
To consist of a piece of writing in which you
thank to all the people who have helped you
throughout your research in any way.
Structure of a Research Paper
 Reference :
To list alphabetically all the reference materials
that have been cited in the text of the report.
Copy
Structure of a Research Paper
 Appendix :
 To consist of supporting information for the research
that is not necessary to include in the text.
 This section provides further insight into the topic of
research but happens to be too complex or too broad
to add to the body of the paper (Additional Diagram,
Additional Tables summarizing data , Long list, Raw
data, details of equipment etc.)
5.Be ORIGINAL and Don’t
PLAGIARIZE
PLAGIARISM
Plagiarism is the representation
of another's language, thoughts,
ideas, or expressions as one's
own
original work.
How to Avoid PLAGIARISM?
 Quoting:
If you don’t want to alter a source, use quotation marks to enclose all
verbatim phrases.
 Summarizing:
If you find multiple relevant points in a lengthy text, simplify them
into your own condensed synopsis.
 Paraphrasing:
If you want to use a source’s information, restate it in your own
words through “new wording and phrasing in just as many words or
slightly more words than the original.”
6. FORMATTING the research paper.
Which one?
MLA Format
[Modern Language
Association of America]
ACM Format
[Association of
Computing Machinery]
APA Format
[American Psychological
Association]
7. Using template of target
CONFERENCE and JOURNAL
IEEE Template :
https://www.ieee.org/conferences/publishing/templates.html
What is THESIS?
A thesis is a type of research
paper based on your original
research.
It is usually submitted as the final
step of a master’s program or a
capstone to a bachelor’s degree.

 Title :
A thesis title is a statement that frames the
argument you are presenting in an academic
paper.
It is a short phrase that tells the audience what
the content is about.
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
 Authors :
The first author should be that person who
contributed most to the work, including writing
of the manuscript.
The sequence of authors should be determined
by the relative overall contributions to the
manuscript.
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
 Abstract :
An abstract is a 150- to 250-word paragraph that
provides readers with a quick overview of your thesis
paper and its organization.
It should express your thesis (or central idea) and your
key points; it should also suggest any implications or
applications of the research you discuss in the paper.
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
 Keywords :
An important part of submitting your thesis is selecting
keywords and subject categories.
These elements become part of the information about
your thesis and will help other researchers to find your
work.
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
It should include :
1. You must have at least one keyword. You can enter up to 6
keywords for your thesis.
2. Capitalize the first letter of keywords.
3. Use full phrases rather than acronyms or abbreviations.
4. Keywords may be a single word or several words. Keywords
may include phrases.
5. Add a keyword if the concept or concepts covers at least 20%
of your thesis.
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
 Introduction (CHAPTER-1)
When writing a thesis, you will need to write an introductory
chapter. This chapter is critical as it is the first thing that the
examiner will read and it is therefore important to make a good
first impression.
It may contains – 1. Motivation 4. Problem Statement
2. Objectives 5. Applications
3. Features 6. Report Layout
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
 Literature Review (CHAPTER-2)
The literature review is a written overview of major
writings and other sources on a selected topic.
There are five key steps to writing a literature review :
1. Search for relevant literature.
2. Evaluate sources.
3. Identify themes, debates, and gaps.
4. Outline the structure.
5. Write your literature review.
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
 Methodology (CHAPTER-3)
A key part of your thesis , the methodology chapter
explains what you did and how you did it, allowing readers
to evaluate the reliability and validity of your research.
It should include:
1. All types of diagram related to your thesis paper.
2. Circuit diagram, block diagram, flow chart.
3. Algorithm.
4. Pictorial explanation of all requirements.
5. Any tools or materials that used in the research.
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
 Experimental setup(CHAPTER-4) :
 In this section, you describe how the experiment was done
and summarize the data taken.
 One typically describes the instruments and detectors
used in this section.
 Describe the procedure followed to collect the data.
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
 Result Discussion (Chapter-5)
A results section is where you report the main findings of
the data collection and analysis you conducted for
your thesis or dissertation. Your results should always be
written in the past tense.
It should include:
1. All types of analysis of your output.
2. Output pictures, graphs, tables.
3. How many times it is good or bad (“%”).
4. Feature wise results.
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
 Conclusion & Future work (CHAPTER-6)
The conclusion should concise and engaging, leaving your reader
with a clear understanding of your main findings, as well as the
answer to your research question.
 It should include:
1. Clearly state the answer to your main research question.
2. Summarize and reflect on your research process.
3. Make recommendations for future work on your thesis .
4. Show what new knowledge you have contributed to your field.
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
 Reference List :
A reference list is a list of the publication information for the
sources you’ve cited in your paper and is intended to give your
readers all the information they need to find those sources.
Here are a few things to keep in mind about reference lists:
1. Do not include sources you read but did not cite.
2. Organize your references alphabetically by the author's last name.
3. Do note bold the title of the list.
4. Italicize titles of longer works (e.g., books, names of newspapers).
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
5. Authors' first and middle names should be written as
initials.
Example:
 The reference entry for a source written by Jane Marie
Smith would begin with "Smith, J. M.“
 If a middle name isn't available, just initialize the
author's first name: "Smith, J."
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
 List of Figures:
A list of figures and tables compiles all of the
figures and tables that you used in your thesis
along with their corresponding page numbers.
Writing process of a THESIS PAPER
What is the Difference
Between Research Paper
and Thesis?
Differences between Research Paper
& Thesis
Research Paper Thesis
1. A research paper is a piece of academic
writing that provides analysis,
interpretation, and argument .
1. Long academic paper that typically
serves as the final project for a university
degree.
2. Shorter than thesis and takes less time. 2. Longer than research paper and takes
more time.
3. Usually not the final project. 3. Usually the final project.
4. Usually not written under supervision. 4. Written under the supervision of an
academic supervisor.
5. Students write research papers to expand
their knowledge.
5. Have to complete a thesis in order to
complete degree.
