Introduction:
I work as a Scrum Master and Coach at AGL, I have been in scrum master role around 3 years, and I am
The reason I was attracted towards this topic was, because I have been performing this role through several organizations and every single one had their own version of it… only one thing I found common was the Job adverts.
My initial understanding of the role was:
Having the understanding of the scrum master role and responsibilities, the reality hit me, that's how the team was …
My team had really good people, they were tech savvy and smart, having those awesome qualities they were not getting along well.
Couple of them were about 2 years old on the project and had witnessed few of the SM’s on the team!
And the time I changed my company, I was couple week’s down,
I found the team was bit flat,
primarily because of the volatile environment where approaches, decisions, solutions were changing on daily basis and series of other organizational changes were imposed intermittently, and one of those unwelcome changes was me :P
as;
I switched jobs and:
I was trying to get along with the team and one morning I took something to the team and this is what happened. (I love Dilbert, speaks to peoples mind!)
I was being challenged from every possible way, for e.g. Meeting expectations from Stakeholder, Managers, Peers, Team members and most importantly myself.
Although I had bit of experience from past, but I was striving to make a difference and help achieve goals!
“Finding Good players is easy. Getting them to play as a team is another story”
-Casey Stengel (Quote)
I realized something has to change drastically, This is the System and I have a role to play, and I have to gather the myself to accomplish the outcome
Moving to the activity;
May I ask you all to mimic me please…. My 7 year old daughter brought my attention to this and I found it interesting!
And,
Now, Can you try this !
Did you find how hard it is to change ? ☺
Well that’s lead me to open up a conversation with myself how can I work towards being present in both roles
What I planned to do;
I decided to create a vision for myself, a vision that will support my thinking, motivate me, and achieve better outcomes for all! (Showing a picture slide)
With help of those valuable discussions I made sure I will practice it in real terms with my teams and every possible opportunity.
And the last, measure what, how, when I am achieving goals, what are the pitfalls, Indeed all did not go as per the plan.. Being human
VISION
Servant leadership, searching for the better potential for people
Mentoring
To receive and incredibly honest feedback
How do I make my vision real, I was feeling bit empty without any guidance, path finder, then I realised, I was in need of a Mentor to help me show the light, how can I achieve goals and importantly coach me being my mirror.
Mentor: Nish
And I would like to thank Nish for being my mentor, for sharing the wealth of knowledge you have that helped me getting a direction and always being there!
Measure
What I actually did and why:
Myers-Brigg's personality test - Your personality type: “The Campaigner” (ENFP-T)
Strength of individual traits: Extraverted: 63%, Intuitive: 55%, Feeling: 61%, Prospecting: 54%, Turbulent: 54%.
Life Coaching for understanding the personal traits,
DISC profiling, to have a gauge on self and others on why people behave when they behave in a certain way
Finally Off-course, the Servant leadership.
Scrum Master as servant leader is a perfect testimony, and it starts with you…hence its just cant be achieved by a certification, and this is why its a mindset, you need to shift your thinking to be a servant leader, it simple… but hard.
here is what I started with;
‘What can I bring to the team in order to make them succeed..’,
‘How can I help you to achieve your team goals..’
‘Imagine, there are no constraints, how would you solve the issues..’
As Mahatma Gandhi says, “You must be the change you wish to see in the world”
