We can build anything we want with PHP, be it a small little blog for ourselves to a giant world-spanning social media network. There are times though that we do not need all of the dynamic goodness that PHP brings and we just need a site that sits there. Sculpin is a static site generator that leverages the power of PHP and Twig to allow developers to quickly generate flat HTML sites, but completely automate the process of stitching all of that HTML together. We’ll quickly run through getting started with Sculpin and the power that it provides.

Functional testing, as any other testing, is important to ensure the health of our apps. However, functional tests are often tricky, too susceptible to change, and their maintenance ends up being a nightmare. Are we hopeless then? Not at all! Luckily, there are tools to ease this task like Geb and Spock, which help us to create well structured, comprehensive, and easy to maintain tests. In this talk we will review these tools, showing different options for creating the tests.

With the rise of Docker, we have seen an unprecedented interest in container technologies where small companies and big enterprises bet their future on these technologies. This trend bases on an immense adoption of containers from software developers. And it has been agreed upon that they are considered highly beneficial for modern engineering practices like Agile and DevOps. But there is a new kid in town that proclaims a more radical approach: Serverless or FaaS: Function-As-A-Service. This paradigm suggests that a developer should only write functions and react to events. The functions are written in high-level programming languages like Javascript, Java or Python, and the underlying compute infrastructure like containers or VMs is transparent to the user. That raises the question: Is the container revolution already dead before it really started? And who now needs container technologies in a serverless world? In this talk we discuss these questions from both a containers advocate and serverless fanboy viewpoints. We confront these two approaches, show the differences, individual strengths and weaknesses and where they complement each other. This talk will also discuss motivations from different involved parties so that the audience can build their conclusion. Vaclav Pavlin (Containers & OpenShift guru): Containers will rule the world!. Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
