CASE STUDY 2: Smart Teams and
Dumb Teams
Group 8
Saumya Jain
Shiva Chaudhary
Shrivriddhi Jaiswal
Shweta Chauhan
Soumya Mukherjee
Sumit Kumar Singh
Features of Smart Teams
 Do not allow individual members to dominate. Equal comes from each member.
 Members are able to read minds of other members & work in sync to achieve their
common goal.
 Have more women (as women scored higher in the Reading the Mind in the Eyes
test)
 High level of emotional intelligence
 Excel in logical analysis, brainstorming, coordination, planning, and moral
reasoning.
Features of Dumb Teams
 Individual members try to dominate the other members to outshine themselves.
 Low level of logical analysis
 Interpersonal conflicts due to low level of emotional intelligence.
 Comparatively lesser number of women.
 No Brainstorming of ideas and have planning, communication, coordination and
reasoning.
 Polarization in ideas & Lack of Empathy
Results produced by Smart Teams
 Efficient, Economic and optimised solutions
 Seamless Engagement and execution
 Productive Collaboration on projects
 High level of commitment and accountability. No Blame games.
Results produced by Dumb Teams
 Compromised, delayed and defective results
 Friction in communication, engagement and execution.
 Un-balanced Participation in the projects.
 No established accountability. Blame games happens when something goes wrong.
From your experiences in teams, Do you agree with
the researchers' findings on the characteristics of smart
teams? Why or why not?
We agree with the researchers’ findings on characteristics of the described smart
teams to a considerable extend because:
 In smart teams individuals do not dominate other members and equal inputs are
taken from each member,
 Members of smart team have high trust, synergy, commitment and productivity.
 The findings of the researchers is something which we can relate to irrespective of
the nature and size of teams.
However the fact that smart teams have more women doesn’t seem to have a cause
and effect relationship. Diversity, Gender equality and proper representation of women
is important but a generalization cannot be made on the finding of a single research.
On the highly functioning teams in which you've been a
member, what other characteristics might have
contributed to success?
 Conflict Resolution : When people with different personalities work together,
conflicts happen. Smart teams know that the best way to deal with hat the best
way to deal with conflict is address the issue directly, quickly, and gracefully.
 Pre defined responsibilities: Every team member needs to know which
responsibilities need to be looked upon so that a group task can set a pace. By
this process the most critical components of the project are finished when the
team gets together.
 Target problem, not people: Smart teams know to separate people from the
problem. If people are targeted, it will breed resentment. But if problems are
targeted, it will result in solutions.
Do you think this spill over effect would happen equally
for people in smart teams and dumb teams? Why or
why not?
Spill over Effect refers to the tendency of one person's emotion to affect how other
people around them feel.
Spillover effect will always occur in both smart and dumb teams because no matter
how good a team is in acting as a group, the impact of individual’s emotion on the
team is inevitable.
However the spillover effect will not happen equally in both teams. This is because
both the teams differ significantly in their fundamental traits which suggest that Smart
teams will have positive effects of the spillover and the dumb teams would have the
negative effects of the spillover.
