Guide to Choose an Overhead Crane

by step to get your right overhead crane

An overhead crane, mostly called a bridge crane due to its look-like, which is widely
used to lift heavy load especially in production flow. It consists of a hook-andwirerope lifting mechanism dropping from an overhead beam running on rails
supported by a steel structure called runway beams which normally are attached in
modern steel-structure workshop;
The lifting system most of the time on a single girder crane is a hoist travelling along
the bridge or overhead beam, while on a double girder crane runs a trolley or verbally
called crab carrying a hoist or winch.
Single girder or double girder depends on the load capacity; generally 25Ton is a
dividing point for this issue; i.e. select single girder design under 25 and double girder
above 25 ton. A hoist will be applied when the load capacity is under 32 tons while a
winch when the capacity is above 32 tons.
It is very critical to select the right overhead crane; efficiency and safety are highly
required in a workshop esp. during production process. So there are many things to
consider in selecting a right overhead crane.
Factors in to sections to be considered in proper overhead crane selection:

Load rating (Capacity)

tailor-made overhead crane.
1. What is the load capacity you need (Ton)?
The Max. weight of load to be handled with the crane.
2. What is the crane span needed?
The span or traverse width of the overhead beam is an must to determine the size of
the crane designing. Normally it may be the full width of your workshop; For some
exceptions like under-hung running overhead crane for those workshop without
attached runway beams, or some gantry cranes on the floor in a specific work area.
3. How long and often the crane will be used?
E.g.: how many hours per day and how many days per week.
4. Free standing or building built-in runways?
Conventional overhead cranes are supported by runway beams that are built into the
workshop building to save more space. Another option is a free standing runway to
support the run way beams.
