TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER
Safty Instructions
These instrument are meant for temperature control applications. It is advisesable to read the user manual before
installation of the unit. All safety related instructions in this manual should be strictly observed to ensure the safety of
operating personnel as well as the instrument.

The instrument must be configured correctly for intended operation.             Incorrect configuration may damage the
instrument or the process under control or it may lead to personnel injury.

Warning
Dangerous voltages are present in this instrument. Before installation or begining of any trouble-shooting procedure
the power to the instrument must be switched off. Instrument suspected of being faulty must be disconnected &
removed to a properly equipped workshop for testing & repair.

To minimize the possibility of hazards like fire or shock,don't expose this instrument to excessive humidity or water.

Avoid using this instrument in areas subject to hazardous conditions like excessive vibration,dirt,excessive humidity
corrosive gases & oils etc. The average ambient conditions should not exceed the maximum ratings specified in
Technical Details section.

Unpacking
Upon receipt of the shipment remove the instrument from the carton & check for the instrument,mounting clamps,User
mannual. Inspect the instrument for shipping damages.In case of damage report it to your nearest dealer & shipping
agency for the claim.Write down the model no. Serial no. for future referance when corrosponding with our service
department.

Installation
The controller in its installed state in panel must not come in close proximity to any corrosive or combustible gases,
caustic vapors, oil, steam or any other process by-product.

The controller in its installed state should not be exposed to carbon dust, salty air, direct sunlight or radiant heat leading
to ambient temperature more than 55 0 C.

Ambient temperature and relative humidity surrounding the controller should not be exceed the limits specified.

The controller in its installed state must be protected against excessive electrostatic and electromagnetic interferences

Mounting
The instrument has been designed for panel mounting to afford ease in installation & inspection.

a) Cut the panel according to the illustration as shown. Then insert a series EAP control unit through the cutout into the
panel ( the panel mounting template shown, will assist panel cutting.)

b) Securely tighten the screws of the mounting clamp with a screw driver. Do not fully tighten one screw but do it
alternatly till the controller front panel is fitted snugly in the cutout.

Control unit is now mounted on panel.

Wiring
a) Before wiring, verify the lable for correct model no. & options. Switch off the power while checking.

b) Care must be taken to ensure that maximum voltage ratings specified in Technical deatails section are not
exceeded.

c) It is always recomonded that the power to the instrument be protected by fuses or circuit braker rated at the
minimum value possible.

d) The instrument must be installed inside a suitably grounded metal enclosure to prevent the live parts being accesible
to human hands & metal tools.

e) All wiring must conform to appropriate standards & regulations. Wiring must be suitable for voltage, current &
temperature ratings of the system.

f) Crimped terminal lugs are recomonded for power & sensor connections.

g)Take care not to over tighten the terminal screws.

h) Unused terminals should not be used as jumper points as they may be internally connected causing damage to the
instrument.

i) Verify that the ratings of the output relays & outputs are not exceeded.

j) Electric power in indusrial environments contains a certain amount of noise in the form of transient voltages & spikes.
The electrical noise can enter & adversaly affect the operation of the instrument to some certain extent. For this
reason it is recomonded that the use of shielded thermocouple extension wire which connects from the sensor to the
controller.

Power Supply Wiring
These controllerare supplied to operate at 90 - 270 VAC. Check that installation voltage corresponds with the
power rating.

Local requirements regarding electrical installation should be rigidly observed. Consideration should be given to
prevent from unauthorised person access to the power terminals

Input Wiring
Thermocouple and RTD wiring
For thermocouple input connections the correct type of thermocouple lead wire extension or proper compensating
cable must be used for entire distance between the thermocouple and the instrument, ensuring that the correct
polarity is observed throughout. Joints in cable must be avoided. If the length of thermocouple plus extension wire
is too long it may affect the measurement value. A 100 ohms lead resistance induce an error of about 2 0 C.

For RTD connections the single end leg wire(generally RED) is connected to terminal no. 1 while other two ends
are connected to terminals 2 & 3 respectivly. The three wire leg offers the capability of lead resistance
compensation provided that three leads should be of same length and gauge. For two wire RTD terminals 2 and 3
must be shorted.

Output Wiring
Connections for output are as below. The rated relay is for 5 Amp @ 230 VAC. The load must be resistive for
rated output. If load is inductive the current ratings must be less than 60% of rated output. Snubber attacment is
recomended for inductive load.

 With this output these instruments can be connected to PC, only one instrument at a time. A conventional 9 pin
 RS-232 cable can be used with some modifications as shown.

Programming Set-Point1

                               When MENU key is pressed for about 3 seconds SET level is entered and display
                               is as shown. Press the DECREMENT key.



                               The lower display shows flashing prompt while upper display shows its
                               corresponding value. Press the DECREMENT key.



                               The lower display shows steady prompt while upper display shows its corresponding
                               value with a flashing digit. The value can be incremented or decremented by proper
                               keys. The flashing digit is shifted to rotating left with SHIFT key. When MENU key is
                               pressed value is entered and by pressing it twice comes to default mode.




Programming Set-Point2
                               The lower display shows flashing prompt and upper display shows its
                               corresponding value as shown. For 4 digit model display shows flashing prompt.
                               Press the Shift key.


                               For 4 digit model display shows flashing prompt. The next set-point will be
                               displayed. The lower display shows flashing prompt while upper display shows its
                               corresponding value. Press the DECREMENT key.


                               The lower display shows steady prompt while upper display shows its corresponding
                               value with a flashing digit. The value can be incremented or decremented by proper
                               keys. The flashing digit is shifted to rotating left with SHIFT key. When MENU key is
                               pressed value is entered and by pressing it twice comes to default mode.

                               Lock value is displayed. There are five lock values from 1 to 5. Lock1:all levels
                               are open, Lock2:calibration is locked,Lock3:calibration and configuration are
                               locked, Lock4: all levels are locked except SET level, Lock5: all are locked no
                               changes can be made. Lock value can be incremented by INCREMENT key.

Description of Operation
When mounting and wiring are complete unit is ready to turn on. Turn on the power supply. Display will show the current
process temperature. Press the selector switch/key, now it will show the set value. By means of set screw, set it to
desired value. For EAP series instrument again press the selector switch, process temperature will be on the display.

Now if wiring is done in relay energised mode the relay will be in energised state and the LED will be ON. Now process
temperature starts increasing, when it crosses the set value the relay will be off, disconnecting external electrical
circuit.The relay- on LED will go off. There are only two states that is relay on and relay off . Due to heat mass of the
system the temperature will go on rising to a certain value and starts decreasing. When it crosses the value about 2 0 C
below the set value, relay again goes on connecting the electrical circuit so that heaters will be on again. The process
temperature drops to a certain minimum value due to heat mass and again starts increasing. The cycle goes on
continuously. The nature of control is of oscillating type.

On--Off Control Action
This type of control action is widely used in industrial processes. There are only two states ON state & OFF state and
no intermidiate step is there. The controlled temperature cycles around the set point as shown in fig. The maximum
temp. above set point is called overshoot while minmum temp. below set point is called undershoot. The degree of
overshoot or undershoot depends upon the system characteristics & not upon the controller. It generally
depends upon sensor response time, time lag, capacity of heating systems, total heat mass of the systems etc.. When
heat mass of system >> than the heat mass of heating system, on-off controller shows good results with minimum

Sensor Placement
Proper sensor placement can eliminate many problems in a control systems. The sensor should be placed so that it can
detect any temperature change with minimum thermal lag. The sensor tip is the sensing element in the system & must
be in direct contact with the process material to provide optimum sensing accuracy. One inch immersion is usually
satisfactory for either liquid or solid applications.

In a process that requires fairly constant heat output,the sensor should be placed close to the heater . In a process
where heat demand is variable, the sensor should be closer to the operating area. Some experimenting with the sensor
location is often required to find the optimum location. In a liquid prosess, the use of stirrer will eliminate the thermal
lag. As thermocouples are point measuring devices placing more than one sensor in parallel will provide an average
temp. reading & produce better results in most processes. Proper sensor type is also a very important factor in
obtaining precise measurements. The sensor must have the correct temp. range to meet the process requirements.
Standard sensor limits of error are +2 degree celcius plus drift caused by improper protection or an over temp.
occurance. This error is far greater than the controller error & can not be corrected at the sensor end except by proper
selection & replacement.

Cautions
As the signals generated by the thermocouples & resistance bulbs are at low levels, complete protection
against induction noise of external origin should be provided.
1 ) Place the thermocouple circuit as wide apart as possible from the power supply circuit. Shielding wires
are recommended.

2 ) Keep the thermocouples at a distance from strong magnetic fields.

3 ) Extend the compensation conductors to the terminals of the
instruments.
Manual Calibration Procedure
Step 1: To enter the Calibration Level
Open Lock position to 1.
Hold Menu key for at least 9 seconds.
Program will enter the Calibration Level and Display will Show
Press the Decrement key and display will show
Again press the Decrement key.

Step2: To calibrate the zero of ADC
Short terminals 1 and 2.
The Display will show arbitrary value.
Press the Increment key.
The program calculates the zero value of ADC and display will show
If input is not shorted then Display will show and calibration of ADC0 fails.

Step3: to calibrate the Gain of ADC
By pressing of the Menu key enter the sub-level 2 of calibration level
Press Shift key and the Display will show
Press the Decrement key
Send a 50 mV signal to terminals 1 and 2 with proper polarity.
Press the Increment key.
The program calculates the Gain value of ADC and display will show a value between
9000 and 9999.
If input is not proper then Display will show         and calibration of ADCG fails.


Step3: to calibrate the Zero of PT-100
By pressing of the Menu key enter the sub-level 2 of calibration level
Press Shift key twice and the Display will show
Press the Decrement key
Send a 100 ohms signal to terminals 1, 2 and 3 with proper polarity.
Press the Increment key.
The program calculates the zero value of PT-100 and display will show
If input is not proper then Display will show         and calibration of PT-100 fails.


Step4: to calibrate the Span of PT-100
By pressing of the Menu key enter the sub-level 2 of calibration level
Press Shift key thrice and the Display will show
Press the Decrement key
Send a 300 ohms signal to terminals 1, 2 and 3 with proper polarity.
Press the Increment key.
The program calculates the Span value of PT-100 and display will show a value between
9000 and 9999.
If input is not proper then Display will show         and calibration of PT-100 fails.

Step4: to calibrate the Ambient
By pressing of the Menu key enter the sub-level 2 of calibration level
Press Shift key four times and the Display will show
With Increment key, Decrement key and Shift key adjust the ambient value.
Troubleshooting Chart
Although all EAP & ETP series instruments are manufactured &shipped under a strict product quality control system,
should any trouble occur, please inform the manufacturer. The troubleshooting chart provided here can be used in
case any trouble occurs. The causes marked with asterisks (*) can be repaired simply. You are requested to check
these items before informing us.


Trouble : Temperature Indication
1] No display at all

2] Display shows “oPEn”
For T/c input
Sensor is open                                  :Check & replace the sensor. Compensation coil is open:Replace

For Rtd input
Short-circuit of sensor connecting part         :Check & correct.
Internal short-circuit of sensor                :Check & replace if necessary.
Single wire end of sensor disconnected          :Connect the wire end.

3] The temperature doesn’t change from ambient for T/C input
Short ckt of sensor connecting part       :Check & correct.
Internal short-ckt of sensor              :Check & replace.
Power to external heater ckt is off       :Check & correct.
Relay driver circuit

4] Unstable Temperature Indication
Trouble in sensor itself                        :Check & replace.
Faulty contact of sensor connections            :Check & correct.

Entrance of noise to the power source           :Check and remove the noise or sensor line source.

How to receive data from instrument to PC?
1)    Start the hyper terminal which is integrated component of MS-98 and upwards. Start >
Programs > Accessories > Communication > Hyper Terminal

2)    Click on hyperetrminal. A dialog box New connection will open. Name the file as per
your choice, choose the icon you prefer and click OK.

3)     Again Hyper Terminal will open another dialog box Connect To. In this dialog box the
fourth data field connect using is to be filled with proper com port number on your computer
e.g. com1 or com2 etc. Click OK.

4)     Again Hyper Terminal will open another dialog box Com Properties. In this box proper
values are to be filled in respective data fields.
              Bits per second               9600
              Data Bits                     8
              Parity                        None
              Stop Bits                     1
              Flow Control                  None
Click on OK.

5)     Hyper Terminal connects your computer to external instrument. Now you will have to set
Properties. For this go to File menu. Click Properties. Hyper terminal will open a dialog box
(File name) Properties. Click Settings Tab. Select Auto Detect on Emulations. Again click on
ASCII Setup Button.
ASCII Sending                     select Send line ends with line feeds
                                  deselect Echo type……..
                                  Fill line Delay with 100 msec
                                  Fill character delay with 2 msec.

ASCII Receiving                   deselect all three fields.

Click OK. Now hyper terminal is configured correctly.

6)       To receive data in text format, click Transfer on Menu Bar. Click Capture Text. Enter
the correct path you desire using browse button. Click Start. Hyper terminal will create a text
file in desired folder and stores data in it.

7)     To start receiving data click Transfer on Menu Bar. Click Send Text File. Enter the
correct path of the file to be send using browse button. Click Open, now the data starts coming
from the instrument to computer and logs in the file specified in capture.

8)    This saved file is in text format and can be opened in Excel and can be further
processed accordingly.

TEMPERATURE CONTROLLER USER MANUAL

  • 2. Safty Instructions These instrument are meant for temperature control applications. It is advisesable to read the user manual before installation of the unit. All safety related instructions in this manual should be strictly observed to ensure the safety of operating personnel as well as the instrument. The instrument must be configured correctly for intended operation. Incorrect configuration may damage the instrument or the process under control or it may lead to personnel injury. Warning Dangerous voltages are present in this instrument. Before installation or begining of any trouble-shooting procedure the power to the instrument must be switched off. Instrument suspected of being faulty must be disconnected & removed to a properly equipped workshop for testing & repair. To minimize the possibility of hazards like fire or shock,don't expose this instrument to excessive humidity or water. Avoid using this instrument in areas subject to hazardous conditions like excessive vibration,dirt,excessive humidity corrosive gases & oils etc. The average ambient conditions should not exceed the maximum ratings specified in Technical Details section. . Unpacking Upon receipt of the shipment remove the instrument from the carton & check for the instrument,mounting clamps,User mannual. Inspect the instrument for shipping damages.In case of damage report it to your nearest dealer & shipping agency for the claim.Write down the model no. Serial no. for future referance when corrosponding with our service department. Installation The controller in its installed state in panel must not come in close proximity to any corrosive or combustible gases, caustic vapors, oil, steam or any other process by-product. The controller in its installed state should not be exposed to carbon dust, salty air, direct sunlight or radiant heat leading to ambient temperature more than 55 0 C. Ambient temperature and relative humidity surrounding the controller should not be exceed the limits specified. The controller in its installed state must be protected against excessive electrostatic and electromagnetic interferences Mounting The instrument has been designed for panel mounting to afford ease in installation & inspection. a) Cut the panel according to the illustration as shown. Then insert a series EAP control unit through the cutout into the panel ( the panel mounting template shown, will assist panel cutting.) b) Securely tighten the screws of the mounting clamp with a screw driver. Do not fully tighten one screw but do it alternatly till the controller front panel is fitted snugly in the cutout. Control unit is now mounted on panel.   • 3. Wiring a) Before wiring, verify the lable for correct model no. & options. Switch off the power while checking. b) Care must be taken to ensure that maximum voltage ratings specified in Technical deatails section are not exceeded. c) It is always recomonded that the power to the instrument be protected by fuses or circuit braker rated at the minimum value possible. d) The instrument must be installed inside a suitably grounded metal enclosure to prevent the live parts being accesible to human hands & metal tools. e) All wiring must conform to appropriate standards & regulations. Wiring must be suitable for voltage, current & temperature ratings of the system. f) Crimped terminal lugs are recomonded for power & sensor connections. g)Take care not to over tighten the terminal screws. h) Unused terminals should not be used as jumper points as they may be internally connected causing damage to the instrument. i) Verify that the ratings of the output relays & outputs are not exceeded. j) Electric power in indusrial environments contains a certain amount of noise in the form of transient voltages & spikes. The electrical noise can enter & adversaly affect the operation of the instrument to some certain extent. For this reason it is recomonded that the use of shielded thermocouple extension wire which connects from the sensor to the controller. Power Supply Wiring These controllerare supplied to operate at 90 - 270 VAC. Check that installation voltage corresponds with the power rating. Local requirements regarding electrical installation should be rigidly observed. Joints in cable must be avoided. If the length of thermocouple plus extension wire is too long it may affect the measurement value. A 100 ohms lead resistance induce an error of about 2 0 C. For RTD connections the single end leg wire(generally RED) is connected to terminal no. 1 while other two ends are connected to terminals 2 & 3 respectivly. The three wire leg offers the capability of lead resistance compensation provided that three leads should be of same length and gauge. For two wire RTD terminals 2 and 3 must be shorted.   • 11. Description of Operation When mounting and wiring are complete unit is ready to turn on. Turn on the power supply. Display will show the current process temperature. Press the selector switch/key, now it will show the set value. By means of set screw, set it to desired value. For EAP series instrument again press the selector switch, process temperature will be on the display. Now if wiring is done in relay energised mode the relay will be in energised state and the LED will be ON. Now process temperature starts increasing, when it crosses the set value the relay will be off, disconnecting external electrical circuit.The relay- on LED will go off. There are only two states that is relay on and relay off . Due to heat mass of the system the temperature will go on rising to a certain value and starts decreasing. When it crosses the value about 2 0 C below the set value, relay again goes on connecting the electrical circuit so that heaters will be on again. The process temperature drops to a certain minimum value due to heat mass and again starts increasing. The cycle goes on continuously. The nature of control is of oscillating type. On--Off Control Action This type of control action is widely used in industrial processes. There are only two states ON state & OFF state and no intermidiate step is there. The controlled temperature cycles around the set point as shown in fig. The maximum temp. above set point is called overshoot while minmum temp. below set point is called undershoot. The degree of overshoot or undershoot depends upon the system characteristics & not upon the controller. It generally depends upon sensor response time, time lag, capacity of heating systems, total heat mass of the systems etc.. When heat mass of system >> than the heat mass of heating system, on-off controller shows good results with minimum Overshoot Setpoint Hysterisis Temperature Undershoot Startup period Time Sensor Placement Proper sensor placement can eliminate many problems in a control systems. The sensor should be placed so that it can detect any temperature change with minimum thermal lag. The sensor tip is the sensing element in the system & must be in direct contact with the process material to provide optimum sensing accuracy. One inch immersion is usually satisfactory for either liquid or solid applications. In a process that requires fairly constant heat output,the sensor should be placed close to the heater . In a process where heat demand is variable, the sensor should be closer to the operating area. Some experimenting with the sensor location is often required to find the optimum location. In a liquid prosess, the use of stirrer will eliminate the thermal lag. As thermocouples are point measuring devices placing more than one sensor in parallel will provide an average temp. reading & produce better results in most processes. Proper sensor type is also a very important factor in obtaining precise measurements. The sensor must have the correct temp. range to meet the process requirements. Standard sensor limits of error are +2 degree celcius plus drift caused by improper protection or an over temp. occurance. This error is far greater than the controller error & can not be corrected at the sensor end except by proper selection & replacement. Cautions As the signals generated by the thermocouples & resistance bulbs are at low levels, complete protection against induction noise of external origin should be provided. 1 ) Place the thermocouple circuit as wide apart as possible from the power supply circuit. Shielding wires are recommended. 2 ) Keep the thermocouples at a distance from strong magnetic fields. 3 ) Extend the compensation conductors to the terminals of the instruments.
  • 12. Manual Calibration Procedure Step 1: To enter the Calibration Level Open Lock position to 1. Hold Menu key for at least 9 seconds. Program will enter the Calibration Level and Display will Show Press the Decrement key and display will show Again press the Decrement key. Step2: To calibrate the zero of ADC Short terminals 1 and 2. The Display will show arbitrary value. Press the Increment key. The program calculates the zero value of ADC and display will show If input is not shorted then Display will show and calibration of ADC0 fails. Step3: to calibrate the Gain of ADC By pressing of the Menu key enter the sub-level 2 of calibration level Press Shift key and the Display will show Press the Decrement key Send a 50 mV signal to terminals 1 and 2 with proper polarity. Press the Increment key. The program calculates the Gain value of ADC and display will show a value between 9000 and 9999. If input is not proper then Display will show and calibration of ADCG fails. Step3: to calibrate the Zero of PT-100 By pressing of the Menu key enter the sub-level 2 of calibration level Press Shift key twice and the Display will show Press the Decrement key Send a 100 ohms signal to terminals 1, 2 and 3 with proper polarity. Press the Increment key. The program calculates the zero value of PT-100 and display will show If input is not proper then Display will show and calibration of PT-100 fails. Step4: to calibrate the Span of PT-100 By pressing of the Menu key enter the sub-level 2 of calibration level Press Shift key thrice and the Display will show Press the Decrement key Send a 300 ohms signal to terminals 1, 2 and 3 with proper polarity. Press the Increment key. The program calculates the Span value of PT-100 and display will show a value between 9000 and 9999. Troubleshooting Chart Although all EAP & ETP series instruments are manufactured &shipped under a strict product quality control system, should any trouble occur, please inform the manufacturer. The troubleshooting chart provided here can be used in case any trouble occurs. The causes marked with asterisks (*) can be repaired simply. You are requested to check these items before informing us. Trouble : Temperature Indication 1] No display at all No power supply :Check power supply Loose power supply connection :Correct connections None of above Consult dealer or manufacturer 2] Display shows “oPEn” For T/c input Sensor is open :Check & replace the sensor. Compensation coil is open:Replace it & re-calibrate. Loose sensor or coil connections :Correct connections. For Rtd input Short-circuit of sensor connecting part :Check & correct. Internal short-circuit of sensor :Check & replace if necessary. Single wire end of sensor disconnected :Connect the wire end. 3] The temperature doesn’t change from ambient for T/C input Short ckt of sensor connecting part :Check & correct. Internal short-ckt of sensor :Check & replace. Power to external heater ckt is off :Check & correct. Relay driver circuit 4] Unstable Temperature Indication Trouble in sensor itself :Check & replace. Faulty contact of sensor connections :Check & correct. Unstable mounting of sensor :Check for sensor mounting. Entrance of noise to the power source :Check and remove the noise or sensor line source. Trouble in signal amplifier or power :Refer to dealer/ manufacturer. Source 5] Temperature decreases instead of increase in Temp. Polarity of T/C is reversed :Connect T/C as shown.   • 14. How to receive data from instrument to PC? 1) Start the hyper terminal which is integrated component of MS-98 and upwards. Start > Programs > Accessories > Communication > Hyper Terminal 2) Click on hyperetrminal. A dialog box New connection will open. Name the file as per your choice, choose the icon you prefer and click OK. 3) Again Hyper Terminal will open another dialog box Connect To. In this dialog box the fourth data field connect using is to be filled with proper com port number on your computer e.g. com1 or com2 etc. Click OK. 4) Again Hyper Terminal will open another dialog box Com Properties. In this box proper values are to be filled in respective data fields. Bits per second 9600 Data Bits 8 Parity None Stop Bits 1 Flow Control None Click on OK. 5) Hyper Terminal connects your computer to external instrument. Now you will have to set Properties. For this go to File menu. Click Properties. Hyper terminal will open a dialog box (File name) Properties. Click Settings Tab. Select Auto Detect on Emulations. Again click on ASCII Setup Button. ASCII Sending select Send line ends with line feeds deselect Echo type…….. Fill line Delay with 100 msec Fill character delay with 2 msec. ASCII Receiving deselect all three fields. Click OK. Now hyper terminal is configured correctly. 6) To receive data in text format, click Transfer on Menu Bar. Click Capture Text. Enter the correct path you desire using browse button. Click Start. Hyper terminal will create a text file in desired folder and stores data in it. 7) To start receiving data click Transfer on Menu Bar. Click Send Text File. Enter the correct path of the file to be send using browse button. Click Open, now the data starts coming from the instrument to computer and logs in the file specified in capture. 8) This saved file is in text format and can be opened in Excel and can be further processed accordingly.
