 Manipur is situated in the Eastern-most corner of NE India.
 Nongda Lairen Pakhangba (33–154 AD) is the ruler
considered as the creator of Manipur (or Kangleipak )
 Meiteilon (Manipuri) is the state language, although, English
and Hindi are also commonly used.
 Vaishnavism came to Manipur during the rule of King
Pamheiba (1709~1748 ) and caused a significant change in the
history of Manipur. The Meitei script was replaced with Bengali
script.
 During the World War II Imphal was occupied by the Japanese.
After Indian independence Manipur became a Union Territory
and subsequently achieved statehood in January 21,1972.
Climate : Manipur enjoys a sub -tropical monsoon climate.

Culture & Traditions
Manipur, in the company of vibrant dances and music boasts of a rich culture. The people of
Manipur are very creative and their artistic abilities are best seen in their handloom & handicrafts.
People
Manipur people comprise of various communities, including Meitei, Naga, Kuki, Meitei Pangal and other
colorful communities. For centuries these people have lived together peacefully, however, each ethnic
group has its own distinctive culture and traditions.
Religion
Manipur, being mostly inhabited by the tribals, the state has numerous followers of
animism. Besides animism, there are many people in the state who follows
different religions, like Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, etc.
Language
Meitei-lon, also called Manipuri, is the native language of the state of Manipur.
Many local dialects are also prevalent among the tribals.
Hindi is not very common like other parts of the country though it is understood by
many people. English is mostly used for official purposes.

built in 1846 A.D in the city of Imphal,
The main deity in the center is Govindaji.

Dances
The true culture of Manipur lies in its dance and drama. The Raas Lila (love story of Radha and Krishna)
dominates the state's performing arts. The 33 tribes of Manipur have their different dances to present.
Games & Sport
The tradition of sports dates back to the ancient history of Manipur - a history of small kingdoms which were in
keen competition with one another. Wars among themselves and with Ava (Myanmar) resulted in a martial
tradition which in turn gave due impetus to the development of indigenous games.
Festivals
The state observes numerous festivals, keeping the cheerfulness alive in its people.
Some of the important festivals of Manipur are Dol Jatra, Rath Jatra, Lai Haraoba, Kut, Gan-Ngai, Christmas,
Cheiraoba, Heikru Hidongba, Ningol Chakouba etc.
Food
The staple diet of Manipur consists of rice, large varieties of leafy vegetables and fishes.
Manipuris typically raise vegetables in a kitchen garden and rear fishes in small ponds around their house.
The taste is very different from mainland Indian cuisines because of the use of various aromatic herbs and
roots that are peculiar to the region .

→ At current prices, the total Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP)
of Manipur was about US$ 2.12 billion in 2011-12.

Economic Snapshot – FDI Inflows &
Investments
→ According to the Department of Industrial Policy &
Promotion, the cumulative FDI inflows to the Northeast
states from April 2000 to January 2014 amounted to
US$ 73 million*.
→ In 2011-12, the outstanding investments in the state
were US$ 17.2 billion.
→ Electricity sector accounted for 48.3 per cent of the
outstanding investments in the state followed by the
services sector (42.8 per cent). Irrigation and real
estate sectors accounted for the rest.

→ Manipur has a domestic cum international airport at Imphal
(Tulihal airport) which is located at 8 km from the heart of the city.

Road Connectivity:
The state has four National Highways (NH)
1. NH-39 connects Dimapur in Nagaland and Myanmar.
2. NH-53 connects Imphal with Jirighat in Assam border.
3. NH-150 runs southwards, connecting Manipur with
Seling in Mizoram.
4. The Government of India has a trilateral agreement
with Thailand and Myanmar to construct a trans-Asian
highway connecting India (through Manipur) to the two
countries.
Railway:
→ A railway-line from Jiribam (Assam border) is under
construction as a national priority project. This railway line is
expected to connect Imphal with the rest of India by 2016.

→ Manipur has a pleasant climate, exotic greenery and varied flora, besides a rich tribal culture.
→ According to the Ministry of Tourism, 114,451 tourists visited Manipur in 2010.
→ The key tourist destinations in the state include the following:
→ The Keibul Lamjao National Park on the bank of the Loktak Lake, the only habitat of brow antlered deer which
is locally known as ‘Sangai’.
→ The Indian National Army Memorial at Moirang where Indian National Army (INA) hoisted tri-colour flag for the
first time on the Indian soil.
→ The Siroy National Park at Ukhrul.
→ Loktak lake, the biggest fresh water lake in the Northeast.

M.C. Marykom a very talented lady in the field of boxing from the small state like Manipur has made the
nation proud of her and admirer of every woman boxer in the country.
No other woman player has enjoyed the popularity that she did for such a long period. After having won for
most of the national and international titles and receiving many privilege awards, Mary could finally win the
Olympic medal when ladies boxing was added for the first time in London Olympics in 2012.

 He was conferred Padmashri in 2006
for his contribution to Indian Cinema
 His films have won 16 national awards
 He was also conferred the prestigious V. Shantaram
lifetime achievement award in 2006 for his contribution
documentary film making.
First Indian to win the Grand Prix at Nantes, France in 1982
for his well crafted and sensitively portrayed Imagi Ningthem
With his film Imagi Ningthem (My son, my precious), he put North-East India on the map of World Cinema.
It was acclaimed by the International film community as a masterpiece. The film was the first Indian Film
to receive the Grand Prix at the Festival des Three Continentes, Nantes ‘82.
His film Sangai: The Dancing Deer of Manipur was declared the 'Outstanding Film of the Year' by British
Film Institute at London Film Festival, 1989.
A rare achievement of Indian Cinema came when Ishanou (The Chosen One) was officially selected for 'Un
Certain Regard' section at Cannes Film Festival, 1991. The film represented India in many major
festivals.

Irom Sharmila
( Iron Lady of Manipur)
 Awarded the 2007 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights,
which is given to "an outstanding person or group,
active in the promotion and advocacy of Peace,
Democracy and Human Rights“.
 In 2010, she won a lifetime achievement award
from the Asian Human Rights Commission.
 Later that year, she won the Rabindranath Tagore
Peace Prize of the Indian Institute of Planning
and Management,
On 2 November 2000, in Malom, a town in the Imphal Valley of Manipur, ten civilians were shot and killed
while waiting at a bus stop. The incident, known as the "Malom Massacre“ was allegedly committed by the
Assam Rifles.
Sharmila, who was 28 at the time, began to fast in protest of the killings, taking neither food nor water.
Having refused food and water for more than 500 weeks, she has been called "the world's longest hunger
striker".

Popular festivals in Manipur
Dol Jatra ( Holi)
The connotation of the term ‘Dol’ is the idol of Lord Krishna; while the meaning of ‘Jatra’ is ‘journey’.
Therefore, ‘Dol Jatra’ is the ‘Journey of the idol of Lord Krishna’.
During this festival, the womenfolk religiously carry in their arms the idol of Lord Krishna & sing the hymns.

Rath Jatra
One of the greatest festivals of the Hindus of Manipur, the Ratha Yatra Festival is celebrated for about 10
days in the month of Ingen (June/July). Lord Jagannath, Lord Baladeva and Subhadra rani are being
placed in a Ratha locally known as Kang pulled by devotees in the street

• Lai-Haraoba ( Festival of God), Meitie community offer prayers, perform different dances

• It is celebrated during the spring season every year.

rather than an annual festival of merry making and fanfare.

Ningol Chakkouba
In Manipuri, 'Ningol' means daughter and 'Chakouba' means invitation for a lunch in the mother's house.
It is a special day for the married daughters in Manipur, and ningol's kids are the happiest ones
at the idea of wearing new cloths and meeting bobok(grand-ma), pupu (grand-pa), mamma(uncle) and others.

• Basanta Ras is a dance drama, which depicts the union of Lord Krishna with
his female devotees, the gopis, and in particular, his consort-devotee Radha.
• It is one of the five traditional Manipuri Ras leelas, based on the Bhagavata tradition.
• It was initially visualised by Maharaja Jay Singh in AD 1700.

  • 2. 2 Manipur – An Introduction Parameters Manipur Capital Imphal Geographical area (sq km) 22,327 Administrative districts (No) 9 Total population (million)* 2.7 Number of tribal community 33 Sex ratio (females per 1,000 males)* 987 Literacy rate (%)* 79.8  Manipur is situated in the Eastern-most corner of NE India.  Nongda Lairen Pakhangba (33–154 AD) is the ruler considered as the creator of Manipur (or Kangleipak )  Meiteilon (Manipuri) is the state language, although, English and Hindi are also commonly used.  Vaishnavism came to Manipur during the rule of King Pamheiba (1709~1748 ) and caused a significant change in the history of Manipur. The Meitei script was replaced with Bengali script.  During the World War II Imphal was occupied by the Japanese. After Indian independence Manipur became a Union Territory and subsequently achieved statehood in January 21,1972.   • 3. 3 Culture & Traditions Manipur, in the company of vibrant dances and music boasts of a rich culture. The people of Manipur are very creative and their artistic abilities are best seen in their handloom & handicrafts. People Manipur people comprise of various communities, including Meitei, Naga, Kuki, Meitei Pangal and other colorful communities. For centuries these people have lived together peacefully, however, each ethnic group has its own distinctive culture and traditions. Religion Manipur, being mostly inhabited by the tribals, the state has numerous followers of animism. Besides animism, there are many people in the state who follows different religions, like Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, etc. Language Meitei-lon, also called Manipuri, is the native language of the state of Manipur. Many local dialects are also prevalent among the tribals. Hindi is not very common like other parts of the country though it is understood by many people. English is mostly used for official purposes. This Hindu temple in Manipur was originally built in 1846 A.D in the city of Imphal, The main deity in the center is Govindaji. 1/2
  • 4. 4 Dances The true culture of Manipur lies in its dance and drama. The Raas Lila (love story of Radha and Krishna) dominates the state's performing arts. The 33 tribes of Manipur have their different dances to present. Games & Sport The tradition of sports dates back to the ancient history of Manipur - a history of small kingdoms which were in keen competition with one another. Wars among themselves and with Ava (Myanmar) resulted in a martial tradition which in turn gave due impetus to the development of indigenous games. Festivals The state observes numerous festivals, keeping the cheerfulness alive in its people. Some of the important festivals of Manipur are Dol Jatra, Rath Jatra, Lai Haraoba, Kut, Gan-Ngai, Christmas, Cheiraoba, Heikru Hidongba, Ningol Chakouba etc. Food The staple diet of Manipur consists of rice, large varieties of leafy vegetables and fishes. Manipuris typically raise vegetables in a kitchen garden and rear fishes in small ponds around their house. The taste is very different from mainland Indian cuisines because of the use of various aromatic herbs and roots that are peculiar to the region . Culture & Traditions 2/2

  • 6. 6 Economic Snapshot – FDI Inflows & Investments → According to the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, the cumulative FDI inflows to the Northeast states from April 2000 to January 2014 amounted to US$ 73 million*. → In 2011-12, the outstanding investments in the state were US$ 17.2 billion. → Electricity sector accounted for 48.3 per cent of the outstanding investments in the state followed by the services sector (42.8 per cent). Irrigation and real estate sectors accounted for the rest.   • 7. 7 Airport: → Manipur has a domestic cum international airport at Imphal (Tulihal airport) which is located at 8 km from the heart of the city. NH-39 connects Dimapur in Nagaland and Myanmar. 2. NH-53 connects Imphal with Jirighat in Assam border. 3. NH-150 runs southwards, connecting Manipur with Seling in Mizoram. 4. The Government of India has a trilateral agreement with Thailand and Myanmar to construct a trans-Asian highway connecting India (through Manipur) to the two countries. Railway: → A railway-line from Jiribam (Assam border) is under construction as a national priority project. This railway line is expected to connect Imphal with the rest of India by 2016. 3/4

M.C. Marykom a very talented lady in the field of boxing from the small state like Manipur has made the nation proud of her and admirer of every woman boxer in the country. No other woman player has enjoyed the popularity that she did for such a long period. After having won for most of the national and international titles and receiving many privilege awards, Mary could finally win the Olympic medal when ladies boxing was added for the first time in London Olympics in 2012.   • 15. 15 Popular Manipuris Aribam Shyam Sharma  He was conferred Padmashri in 2006 for his contribution to Indian Cinema  His films have won 16 national awards  He was also conferred the prestigious V. Shantaram lifetime achievement award in 2006 for his contribution documentary film making. First Indian to win the Grand Prix at Nantes, France in 1982 for his well crafted and sensitively portrayed Imagi Ningthem With his film Imagi Ningthem (My son, my precious), he put North-East India on the map of World Cinema. It was acclaimed by the International film community as a masterpiece. The film was the first Indian Film to receive the Grand Prix at the Festival des Three Continentes, Nantes ‘82. His film Sangai: The Dancing Deer of Manipur was declared the 'Outstanding Film of the Year' by British Film Institute at London Film Festival, 1989. A rare achievement of Indian Cinema came when Ishanou (The Chosen One) was officially selected for 'Un Certain Regard' section at Cannes Film Festival, 1991.   • 16. 16 Popular Manipuris Irom Sharmila ( Iron Lady of Manipur)  Awarded the 2007 Gwangju Prize for Human Rights, which is given to "an outstanding person or group, active in the promotion and advocacy of Peace, Democracy and Human Rights“.  In 2010, she won a lifetime achievement award from the Asian Human Rights Commission.  Later that year, she won the Rabindranath Tagore Peace Prize of the Indian Institute of Planning and Management, On 2 November 2000, in Malom, a town in the Imphal Valley of Manipur, ten civilians were shot and killed while waiting at a bus stop. The incident, known as the "Malom Massacre“ was allegedly committed by the Assam Rifles. Sharmila, who was 28 at the time, began to fast in protest of the killings, taking neither food nor water. Having refused food and water for more than 500 weeks, she has been called "the world's longest hunger striker". A. 7/8
  • 17. 17 Popular Manipuris Haulianlal Guite ( 33rd Rank in Civil Services Exam 2010) The 23 year old IAS topper Haulianlal Guite, is a Bachelor student of Philosophy & graduated from St. Stephen College, Delhi University.   • 18. 18 Popular festivals in Manipur Dol Jatra ( Holi) The connotation of the term ‘Dol’ is the idol of Lord Krishna; while the meaning of ‘Jatra’ is ‘journey’. Therefore, ‘Dol Jatra’ is the ‘Journey of the idol of Lord Krishna’. During this festival, the womenfolk religiously carry in their arms the idol of Lord Krishna & sing the hymns. A. 1/6
  • 19. 19 Popular festivals in Manipur Rath Jatra One of the greatest festivals of the Hindus of Manipur, the Ratha Yatra Festival is celebrated for about 10 days in the month of Ingen (June/July).   • 22. 22 Popular festivals in Manipur Ningol Chakkouba In Manipuri, 'Ningol' means daughter and 'Chakouba' means invitation for a lunch in the mother's house. It is a special day for the married daughters in Manipur, and ningol's kids are the happiest ones at the idea of wearing new cloths and meeting bobok(grand-ma), pupu (grand-pa), mamma(uncle) and others.   • 24. 24 Popular Dances of Manipur • Basanta Ras is a dance drama, which depicts the union of Lord Krishna with his female devotees, the gopis, and in particular, his consort-devotee Radha. • It is one of the five traditional Manipuri Ras leelas, based on the Bhagavata tradition. • It was initially visualised by Maharaja Jay Singh in AD 1700.
