Jesus was not the Messiah
Jesus did not come to earth to be
the Messiah…there was a Calvary
conspiracy between Rome, the
high priest, and Herod to execute
Jesus as an insurrectionist…Jesus
refused by word and deed to claim
to be the Messiah, how can the
Jews be blamed for rejecting what
was never offered?
What is a Messiah?
What was he supposed to do?

The LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you
have done this, cursed are you above all livestock
and above all beasts of the field; on your belly you
shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your
life. I will put enmity between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and her offspring; he
shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his
heel.”

Tiamat is the Mesopotamian goddess in the Babylonian
creation myth who brought chaos to the earth in the
Babylonian epic Enuma Elish (1800 BC). In the myth
Tiamat always symbolizes the forces of evil and chaos,
which destablizes the peace established by the
gods. Marduk is the Babylonian hero who saves the world
by killing Tiamat at the end of time. Tiamat is depicted as a
female serpent or dragon who is slain at the end of time.

You are a lion’s cub, Judah; you return from the
prey, my son. Like a lion he crouches and lies
down, like a lioness—who dares to rouse him? The

the nations shall be his.

After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had
given him rest from all his enemies around him, he said to
Nathan the prophet, “Here I am, living in a house of cedar,
while the ark of God remains in a tent.” Nathan replied to the
king, “Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for
the LORD is with you.”
(2 Sam 7:1–3 NIV)
But that night the word of the LORD came to Nathan,
saying: “Go and tell my servant David, ‘This is what
the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house
to dwell in? I have not dwelt in a house from the day I
brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I
have been moving from place to place with a tent as
my dwelling.
(2 Sam 7:4–6 NIV)
‘The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will
establish a house [dynasty] for you: When your days
are over and you rest with your ancestors, I will raise
up your offspring [seed] to succeed you, your own

the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will
establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be

What will the Messiah do?
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was
crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the
chastisement that brought us peace, and by his
wounds we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have
turned—every one—to his own way; and the LORD
has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53:5-6
How will the Messiah die?
My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why are
you so far from saving me, from the words of my
groaning? O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest. Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel. In you our fathers
trusted; they trusted, and you delivered them. To you they
cried and were rescued; in you they trusted and were not
put to shame. (Ps 22:1–5 ESV)
But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by mankind and
despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they
make mouths at me; they wag their heads; “He trusts in
the LORD; let him deliver him; let him rescue him, for he
delights in him!” Yet you are he who took me from the
womb; you made me trust you at my mother’s breasts. On
you was I cast from my birth, and from my mother’s womb
you have been my God. Be not far from me, for trouble is
near, and there is none to help. Many bulls encompass
me; strong bulls of Bashan surround me; they open wide
their mouths at me, like a ravening and roaring lion. (Ps
22:6–13 ESV)
I am poured out like water, and all my bones are
out of joint; my heart is like wax; it is melted
within my breast; my strength is dried up like a
potsherd, and my tongue sticks to my jaws; you
lay me in the dust of death. For dogs

Were Jews Expecting
A God-Man?

Jews who believe that the
Torah is from God agree on
almost every important issue of
life with Christians who
believe…the Old Testament --
is divine. [however] As a Jew, I
have many differences with
Christians’ theology. We differ
on the Trinity; and the divinity of
Jesus.

Critical NT Scholars
The Christian belief that
Christ died, rose again, and
was a God-man originated in
Greek Gnosticism.
Rudolph Bultmann
(Bultmann, 1941, p. 8)
Historical NT Scholarship
In the eyes of the multitudes, it was blasphemous to
proclaim the Messiah to be God (Wescott, 1860, p. 145).
The idea of a Divine person…[was] foreign to the Jewish
audience of Jesus. (Edersheim, A., 1886, p. 173).
Jews expected Messiah to be a human king, and ruler.
(Schürer, E., 1891, p. 160).
When I first began thinking
about a divine human within
Judaism it was an enigma:
Jews were monotheists and
believed in only one God.
How could they say Jesus
was God?
(Erhman, B., 2014, Kindle Loc. 593)
[Now] I argue that there
were Jews…who thought it
was altogether acceptable
to worship a divine human
as god.
(Erhman, B., 2014, Kindle Loc. 593)
Is Jesus God?
1. Did Jesus say He was God?
2. Did the Jewish Bible say the Messiah will
be God?
3. Did any Jews at the time of Jesus think
the Messiah will be God?
Is Jesus God?
1. Did Jesus say He was God?
At that time the Feast of Hanukah
took place at Jerusalem. It was winter,
and Jesus was walking in the temple,
in the colonnade of Solomon
(John 10:22–25 ESV)
So the Judaeans gathered around him and
said to him, “How long will you keep us in
suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us
plainly.” Jesus answered them, “I told you,
and you do not believe. The works that I do
in my Father’s name bear witness about me.
(John 10:22–25 ESV)
I and the Father are one
(John 10:30)
The Judaeans picked up
stones again to stone him!
(John 10:31–32)
Objection!
Being One with the Father
Is not the same as
claiming to be God!
Rabbi Shmuly Boteach
Jesus asked: “I have shown you many good
works from the Father; for which of them are you
going to stone me?” They answered: “It is not for
a good work that we are going to stone you but
for blasphemy, because:
You being a man, made yourself out to be God.”
(John 10:33)
Objection!
They just misunderstood
what Jesus said!
Richard Dawkins
Your father Abraham rejoiced that
he would see my day. He saw it and
was glad.” The Judaeans said to
him, “You are not yet fifty years old,
and have you seen Abraham?”
(John 8:56–59 ESV)
Jesus said to them, “Truly,
truly, I say to you:
Before Abraham was, I AM.”
(John 8:56–59 ESV)
John 8:58
I AM
Ego Eimi
Exodus 3:14
“I am that I am”
Ego Eimi (I AM)
They picked up stones to
throw at him, but Jesus hid
himself.
(John 8:56–59 ESV)
Jesus said He is Divine
• Jesus called Himself the “I Am” (Jn 8:58)
• He said he has the same divine nature as the
Father (John 10:30)
Jesus said He is divine
• Jesus said He is equal to the Father (Jn 5:18)
• Jesus’ disciples called Him God: “My Lord &
my God!” (Jn: 20:28)

Messiah Before Jesus Jewish Gospels How Jesus Became God Two Powers in Heaven
Messiah’s Divine and Human
nature are clearly found in the
messianic [literature of
Qumran and] influenced the
emergence of Christianity
(Knohl I., 2000, p. 52).
There were many Jews who
believed in…something like the
incarnation [of God]…Jesus when
he came, came in a form that many
Jews were expecting: a divine
figure incarnated as a human.
(Boyarin, 2013, Kindle Loc. 241)
Is Jesus God?
1. Jesus clearly claimed to be God
2. The Jewish Scriptures clearly said the Messiah will

3. Some Jews in the first century clearly understood the

4. Mainstream (including Jewish) scholarship is now
acknowledging that some Jews believed it.
