3. TEACH FOR ALL MODEL CAN EFFECTIVELY ADDRESS 3 MAJOR ISSUES IN
SLOVAK EDUCATION
1
Unattractive
teacher
career
2
Low
education
level at
Roma
communities
3
Lacking
leadership
We urgently need to attract young talent into classrooms
Less than 1% of our brightest graduates are selecting education as their career of choice
Tests of students entering teacher studies revealed that recruited students had lowest
scores on generic knowledge compared to students of any other field
We need to engage country’s best talent to educate Roma children
for the first time in our history we experience 2nd-generationunemployment and poverty,
where unemployment rate in Roma communities is 95%
only 20% (compared to national average of 88%) of Roma children complete higher
education
traditional techniques and teachers fail in attempt to educate Roma people
We need to cultivate new generation of strong education leaders
Leadership at school level is critically low, where 65% of teachers say they are
demotivated by school principal
Majority of Slovak do not trust our education leaders and 92% of them think, that
education system is not preparing our children for their jobs

5. SEE HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS AND DELIVERS IMPACT
23 years ago, a fresh Princeton graduate Wendy Kopp started Teach For America. She could not accept situation where
millions of kids where receiving poor education, not even being able to read or count at age 10. She setup for a quest that
One Day, All Children will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. 23 years later we are starting to see how
her vision is starting to materialize across the country.
Watch clips illustrating impact of her idea and the secrets behind Teach For America - Click on the photo to watch the video
It all begins with vision everyone at Teach For America believes: "Now we see, it is absolutely
possible, to ensure that all of our kids can attain an excellent education"
Wendy Kopp, Founder of Teach For America:
Teachers do much more than is expected: "Teach For America teachers went over and beyond
the duty of the teacher. They taught kids how to learn, how to think, they taught them the life"
Tonya Johnson, Holmes Elementary School Specialist
And foremost – they take full responsibility for education of „their“ the children: "I don't care from
what environment the child is. I don't care if it's drugs, if it's single parents, if the parents don't speak
English. If that kid comes to me, that kid will get an excellent education"
Geoffrey Canada, Founder of Harlem Children Zone
To transform education, Teach For America understands creating thousands of great teachers is
not enough. Their objective is to develop education dedicated leaders: „None of us will be surprised,
when one day, a women sitting in the White house, will be Teach For America alum“
Kaya Henderson, Chancellor of DC Public schools, Teach For America Alum
One person can change the world, but cannot accomplish it alone. Teach For America was designed
from beginning to become a movement: "I believe the education movement being led by the Teach For
America alumni is the most important civil rights movement of our time“
Walter Isaacson, President of Aspen Institute
