One of the biggest animal testing scandals was exposed
by the Sunday People, which printed its “smoking
beagles” front page in 1975.
Reporter Mary Beith took the picture of dogs forced to
inhale smoke from up to 30 cigarettes a day at the ICI
animal-testing laboratory in Macclesfield, Cheshire.
