The system is constantly changing with a
lot more emphasis on startups and
entrepreneurial driven commercialisation,
as opposed to traditional linear models that
focused on taking HEI and Science Council
ideas through the commercialisation life-cycle.
New money is ﬂowing into the demand for new
products and services, ranging from large
corporation efforts in Enterprise Development,
as well as a local early stage Venture Capital and
angel investment sector that appears to be
picking up momentum.
A third trend is the uptake of social and civil
society driven initiatives, especially in so far as
increased citizen services, Smart Cities and
social innovation.
However, one area that appears to be stalling is
the output of world-class commercialisable
science from our academic research institutions,
and science councils, evidenced in the overall
drop in R&D as a percentage of GDP and the
results from the R&D survey

business models. As a result, AlphaCode was established to identify key
industry entrepreneurs building businesses that will change the landscape
of the industry, and spur the development of other businesses, within the
financial services sector. With a formidable network of members in the
blockchain, data analytics, mobile, payments and other vertical spaces,
AlphaCode unlocks growth by promoting access to resources and events
to take businesses to the next level.
Our co-working office and events space in Johannesburg has been
carefully crafted to provide the ultimate working environment and has
become a hub for fintech disruptors. It is also a meeting place where ideas
are shared, connections are made and new projects emerge.
We actively promote collaboration between our members and work

ENTREPRENEURS BY ENTREPRENEURS, WITH
THE AIM OF PURSUING RESEARCH, POLICY
DESIGN AND STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT
PROGRAMMES TO CATALYSE
ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND JOB CREATION IN
SOUTH AFRICA.
This is done ﬁrstly through research, policy review and advocacy,
SiMODiSA is engaging directly with Government and the private sector to
gather industry insight and feedback to identify the key constraints and
practical solutions needed to create an enabling entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Secondly, through entrepreneurial ampliﬁcation programmes, with partners
and stakeholders SiMODiSA intends on bridging the gap between
universities, research institutions, entrepreneurs and investors whilst
providing the tools, training and networking events needed.
SiMODiSA’s primary goal is to substantially increase the quantity, quality
and success rate of start-ups and SMEs in South Africa, thereby
contributing to economic growth, human capital and the permanent
creation of formal, well-paying “decent” jobs.

THE VISION OF THE DEPARTMENT OF
SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (DST) IS TO
CREATE A PROSPEROUS SOCIETY THAT
DERIVES ENDURING AND EQUITABLE
BENEFITS FROM SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY.
Its mission is to develop, coordinate and manage a national system of
innovation that will bring about maximum human capital, sustainable
economic growth and improved quality of life for all.
Three agencies (the National Research Foundation, the Technology
Innovation Agency and the South African National Space Agency), two
science councils (the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and the
Human Sciences Research Council), the National Advisory Council on
Innovation, the Academy of Science of Africa and the South African
Council for Natural Scientific Professions are accountable to the Ministry
of Science and technology through the Department. A key focus of the
Department is on strengthening connections between business,
government, science councils, higher education institutions and society
thereby increasing the size and the effectiveness of the innovation system,
and ensures closer alignment with companies operating in sectors
consistent with the National Development Plan (NDP) growth strategy.
The Department has also initiated platforms such as the Innovation
Bridge Technology Showcase and Matchmaking event , Science Forum
South Africa etc. with the main objective of creating a platforms for key
role players in the National System of Innovation and international
stakeholders to interact and form collaborations.
South Africa is also building muscle in the areas of health research, earth
observation, renewable energy and the beneficiation of metals.
Information and communication technology are being used in pilot
projects to show how technologies can benefit South Africans, especially
in previously marginalised communities, in respect of education needs,
among others. The DST's Technology Localisation Programme and other
DST agencies programmes e.g. TIA Technology stations are being used to
improve the competitiveness of small and medium enterprises.
As required by the National Development Plan, the DST will continue its
efforts to provide South Africa with enduring benefits from science,
technology and innovation.

STEPHAN J LAMPRECHT IS AN INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER WITH
SEVERAL YEARS EXPERIENCE IN WORKING WITH ENTREPRENEURS,
INNOVATORS, CORPORATE ENTITIES AND FUNDING INSTRUMENTS
(VENTURE CAPITAL AND ANGEL INVESTORS, DEVELOPMENT
FINANCE INSTITUTIONS).
He has worked in several Sub-Sahara Africa countries including South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania, Egypt
and Tunisia, as well as international interventions in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Europe and the UAE.
Through his network of associates, Stephan brings a wealth of experience, subject matter expertise and
energy to any assignment. Stephan formerly ran the Technology Top 100 Awards Programme – at the
time SA’s premier business excellence awards programme celebrating innovation – and was mandated to
do so by the South African Department of Science and Technology.
In an effort to create more awareness of the business of innovation and the important of managing
intellectual assets, Stephan hosted interviews with various IP practitioners, business leaders and
high-tech entrepreneurs about their experience in managing IP. This covered roughly 40 episodes for
the Summit TV television channel and is available for download online.
MS. MATSI MODISE IS THE MANAGING DIRECTOR OF SIMODISA. SHE
IS THE FORMER NATIONAL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE SOUTH
AFRICAN BLACK ENTREPRENEURS FORUM (SABEF) AND IS AN AVID
ENTREPRENEURSHIP ACTIVIST.
She is the founder of Furaha Afrika Holding (Pty) Ltd, a Pan-African advisory company that focuses on
enterprise and business development solutions.
Her experience ranges from Investment Banking at Investec Bank Ltd, and Enterprise Development
advisory with South African banks, institutions of higher learning and corporate entities. She has
coached numerous small business owners in remote areas of South Africa to increase skills and capacity
in small businesses.
She currently sits on the board of the Free State Land Use Advisory Board; Agri-Vie Fund as a trustee;
The Innovation Hub as a Non-Executive Director and Start Up Nations South Africa. She is a member
of the Institute of Business Advisors. She is a subcommittee member of the South African Venture
Capital/ Private Equity Association (SAVCA) and the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS)
Innovation Management committee. She is a World Economic Forum (WEF) founding curator of the
Soweto Global Shapers Hub in Gauteng.

Claire has BBBEE, infrastructure, energy and social impact investment experience from
heading up the Isibaya Fund at the Public Investment Corporation where she and her team
managed R 40 billion worth of unlisted assets.
Claire has SME ﬁnancing experience from her time as Chief Investment Officer of the
National Empowerment Fund and has listed equity investment experience as a Senior
Portfolio Manager at Eskom Pension & Provident Fund.
Early in her career Claire spent time as an investment banker as an Executive Director of
ABN Amro South Africa and as in house corporate ﬁnancier for Rebhold, a listed company.
Claire is an experienced private equity investor as the head of SCMB’s Leveraged Investments
Division and has insight into the overall workings of banking institutions from her time as Head
of Strategic Planning for the Standard Bank Group.

Dominique has an entrepreneurial background and has worked throughout Africa, Russia, and

TYME, a South African based technology company that was launched out of the Deloitte
Innovation Incubator. TYME was sold to Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) in early 2015.
Prior to this, Dominique’s career spanned both banking and management consulting at McKinsey &
Company and the Standard Bank Group.
Dominique holds an M.Sc. (Finance) from the London Business School and a B.Bus.Sci from
Rhodes University.

Industries SBU, which was established in April 2015, is to support the development of new industries

Since starting his career with Bain & Co and later as a corporate strategist, Jason has spent the last 10
years starting, advising, incubating, investing in, and sitting on boards of early stage firms. Since
co-founding Edge Growth, Jason has advised many multi-national and large South African clients on
enterprise development.
Jason’s primary focus is growing new companies: as an entrepreneur, venture financier,and advisor. Jason
got his first taste of venturing working for Bain & Co in 2001, helping De Beers Technology commercialise
tech. which they could not use in the mines. He then spent a few years in corporate strategy, mostly in the
airline industry doing both expansion strategy and implementation work. Since 2005 he has focused
almost exclusively on growing new companies. Jason has been a pioneer in the field of early stage growth
strategy, and as such been keynote speaker at several local and international events on growing companies.
His passions are growth strategy, financing, and what he calls ‘business building’ (evolving leadership,
operations and management infrastructure to handle the growing complexity of the business).

London, latterly as Director, Principal Finance investing in loan and debt capital market transactions
predominately in structured credit, infrastructure and property sectors. Upon return to South Africa,
Janice worked as a consultant for PwC on the African Bank debt restructuring.

IDF Capital is a South African based entrepreneurial financier and advisory firm. Through IDF Capital, Polo has contributed
towards channeling investments into women owned SMEs across South Africa. In 2015, she co-founded Alitheia Identity to
continue investing in high growth businesses across Sub-Saharan Africa that are women owned and led.
Polo is an accountant by training, and has varied experience in both the Public and Private sectors of South Africa which
includes accounting and auditing, corporate finance, investment banking, public policy formulation and venture capital and
private equity in the SME sector.
Polo is an accomplished public speaker, contributor to thought leadership articles on transformation and entrepreneurship. She
was also part of South Africa’s version of the Dragons Den show and is also a co-Author of a book called “.....and for all these

Originally from Pretoria, he studied at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (formerly UPE) and qualified as a
Chartered Accountant in 2002 and has subsequently invested or funded 21 companies in the tech industry.
Alan was named as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2009. Forbes listed him as one of the top
10 young African millionaires to watch. He was also included in “100 Choiseul Africa", a list of top 100 young African
business leaders in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and nominated as the 2015 ICT Personality of the Year by ITWeb.

Mr. Barlow Manilal has recently joined Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) as the new Chief
Executive Officer. He holds a BSc Hons. degree in Industrial Technology & Management, several
other management qualiﬁcations. His 30-page Curriculum Vitae consists of the kinds of
achievements and awards that society could only be inspired and motivated by.
Prior to joining TIA in April this year, Mr Manilal spent 14 years at the Automotive Industry
Development Centre (AIDC), of which 7-years were as CEO.
Mr Manilal has gained excellent knowledge of project engineering and manufacturing in the
automotive OEM environment at Toyota SA and Mercedes Benz SA. Mr Manilal also served as the
National President of the Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transportation of South Africa
(CILTSA) from 2006 until the beginning of 2015. In addition to that, he is also an Editorial
Advisory Board member of Transport World Africa, a representative on the Federation of Supply
Chain Management Associations of South Africa as well as being part of the Automotive Industry
Advisory Council to the University of Johannesburg.
In striving to achieve his personal philosophy and motto to “Make excellence an attitude”, he
encourages a learning culture whilst entrenching a winning team spirit comprising of the following 6

APRIL 2013. HE WAS THE GROUP CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER
AND MANAGING DIRECTOR AT VODACOM SINCE 2011.
Prior to joining Vodacom, Sipho was the Chief Executive Officer of BP Africa (Pty) Limited from 2008 to
2012 and the Chief Operating Officer in 2007.
He also served in various positions at BP since 1997.
Sipho is currently a Non-Executive Director of the Board of the Centre for Development & Enterprise since
2009. He served as Chairman of the Board of SAPREF (Shell & BP South African Petroleum Reﬁneries Pty
Ltd) from July 2010 to August 2011.

Mr. Mmboneni Muofhe is the Deputy Director-General (DDG) for Technology Innovation at the
Department of Science and Technology in South Africa. He was previously DDG for International
Cooperation and Resources and has held several positions at the Department, including being Chief
Director: International Resources, Director: Strategic Partnerships and Director: Global Projects.
During this period he oversaw South Africa's growing participation in EU Research Funding
programmes, led the mobilization of Official Development Assistance funds to support South Africa
science system and the Department’s partnership with Multinational Companies. Mr Muofhe’s earlier
working and post-graduate years were mainly in agricultural biotechnology.
He was a UNESCO Biotechnology Fellow at the Agricultural Research Council in 1997 before joining
the Foundation for Research Development (now National Research Foundation) as Coordinator and
then Manager for Technology and Human Resource for Industry Programme (THRIP).
Mr Muofhe’s current responsibilities include overseeing the implementation of South Africa’s Space
Science and Technology Strategy, Bioeconomy Strategy, Energy Research and Technology Strategy,
Innovation Priorities Instruments (including new Research Areas) and oversight of the IP act.

and telecommunications.
He serves on the global Accenture Corporate Citizenship Council, and is Non-Executive Chairman of Foodbank
South Africa. He also sits on the Business Unity South Africa Board of Trustees.

She is also the Vice President for Innovation and Technology Transfer for the Southern African Research and Innovation
Manager’s Association (SARIMA), serves on The Innovation Hub’s Investment Committee, and chairs the board of one
of Wits’ spin outs, SmartSpot Quality (Pty) Ltd.
Ela holds a master’s in Electronic Engineering, and is a Registered Technology Transfer Professional with the international
Association of Technology Transfer Professionals. Her early career included spending nearly a decade at the Council for
Scientiﬁc and Industrial Research (CSIR) where her last role was as Technology Manager of the ICT division. This role
involved managing the division’s strategic positioning funding – grant funding from the Department of Science and
Technology. She has been a consultant in innovation and technology transfer sector, and spearheaded the start-up funding
instrument of the Innovation Fund, where she worked with dozens of technology development and start-up opportunities.
She was lead on several startup investments syndicated with venture capital. This culminated in her role as General
Manager: Fund Management at the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA). After 8 years in the innovation funding space,
she made the move to a more hands on role in commercialisation of technologies out of universities.

MCLEAN SIBANDA IS AN ENGINEER AND PATENT ATTORNEY. HE
HAS RECENTLY BEEN APPOINTED FOR A SECOND TERMS AS THE
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER OF THE INNOVATION HUB. HE HAS
EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE IN INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY,
ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND INNOVATION; HAVING CO-FUNDED
SIBANDA & ZANTWIJK ATTORNEYS, AND ALSO WORKED WITH A
LOT OF STARTUPS DURING HIS TIME AT THE INNOVATION FUND.
He has held senior and executive roles in a number of private and public sector organisations in South Africa. He
has served as an Expert to the African Union (AU), World Intellectual Property Organisation, and the
Department of Science and Technology on intellectual property and innovation matters.
An immediate past board member of the CSIR, past acting co-executive director of the Innovation Fund
(2008-2010) and Technology Innovation Agency Group Executive for Commercialisation until 2011; he currently
serves on the boards of the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO), IASP, and African
Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF).

GROUP, HAVING PREVIOUSLY BEEN SECTOR DIRECTOR –
FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS WITHIN RMB COVERAGE.
A decade in international strategy consulting with Monitor Group (now Monitor Deloitte), as well as
entrepreneurial involvement in the on-demand / location-based economy has resulted in a set of
multi-disciplinary skills typically deployed in the strategy, business development and business change
contexts – often with a strong technology-creative imperative. Originally trained as a lawyer and working at
Cliffe Dekker Hofmeyer, Anton holds a Masters Degree in Securities and Banking Law from University of
Johannesburg, as well as a Masters in Business Administration from INSEAD (France).
