RMG(Ready-Made Garments) Sectors in Bangladesh
What is RMG?
Ready-made garments are mass-produced finished textile products of
the clothing industry. They are made from many different fabrics and
yarns.
RMG Sector in Bangladesh :
The economy of Bangladesh is significantly dependent on agriculture.
But its a great news for the country that, readymade garments (RMG) sector of
Bangladesh has raised as the biggest earner of foreign currency. This sector
creates about 4.2 million employment opportunities and contributes significantly to
the GDP.

Workers Details Of RMG
According to the survey, there are 3,596 active RMG factories in
Bangladesh with 3.5 million workers, of which 60.8% are female
and 39.2% are male. In the previous survey in 2015, the workers
were 36% male and 64% female.
Average Age:
Female : 23.8 years
Male : 23.5 years
Work Duration:
A garments worker has to reach to garments very early morning.
He/she works there long 10-12 hours. Sometimes he/she has to
work up to midnight and he/she also does not get any vehicle at
that time for returning home. He/she does not get extra holiday
except Friday and special occasions like Eid. If he/she does not go
to work for any emergency personal work, then he/she does not get
money for those days. As a result their life becomes bored.
Salary
Minimum 8000 taka and maximum 18,257 taka

 What is BGMEA?
 Those who are doing job or study in garments sector must know
about BGMEA. BGMEA is building a strong backbone of
Bangladesh’s economy. BGMEA actually the short form of –
“Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association”
which is one of the largest trade associations in our country
How BGMEA Runs?
 BGMEA is consists of by 27-members.There are Board of Directors,
those are elected person. The Board of Directors is elected for a
two-year term. The Board of Directors takes assistance from
different Standing Committees headed by a Chairman and
composed of members having vast experience in the related fields.
But the President is the highest executive authority of the
association. In BGMEA election the entire disciplined are
maintained with restriction.
Mission and Vision
 BGMEA has some mission and vision. BGMEA works with the
vision-
 To develop the RMG industry of Bangladesh.
 To develop the economy of the country.
 To protect and promote the interests of the industry.
 To ensure all legitimate rights and privileges of the garments
Workers.

 Green & Clean Production.
 Garments related education.
 Healthcare for the workers.
 Increasing wages.

Factory Crisis in Bangladesh RMG Sector:
(1) That's It Sportswear Ltd fire 2010 :
On 14 December 2010 thirty people died and another 200 were
seriously injured in a fire at the garment factory, "That’s It Sportswear
Ltd", owned by Hameem Group.
(2) Tazreen Fashion factory fire in 2012:
A fire broke out on 24 November 2012, in the Tazreen Fashion factory
in Dhaka killing 117 people and injuring 200. It was the deadliest factory fire
in the history of Bangladesh.
(3) Rana Plaza collapse in 2013 :
On 24 April 2013 over 1045 textile workers factories making clothes for
Western brands were killed when a garment factory collapsed. The 2013
Savar building collapse was in the Rana Plaza complex, in Savar. It was the
"world's deadliest industrial accident" since the Bhopal disaster in India in
1984.
(4) Mirpur textile factory fire 2013
On 9 May 2013 eight people were killed when a fire broke out at a
textile factory in an eleven-story building in the Mirpur industrial
district owned by Tung Hai Group, a large garment exporter

British multinational company has been
increasingly sourcing more apparel from
Bangladesh in recent years as well with an
increase of around 30% in the past three years!

Calvin Klein, owned by PVH, signed the Accord
on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, and
and spent up to $2.5 million to underwrite the
program. They source apparels like underwear,
t-shirts, denimwear, etc.

Lee, one of the most well known denim
brands in the world, is one of the many big
brands taking advantage of Bangladesh’s fast
growing Denim Industry.
4. H&M
H&M is one of largest buyers in the
Bangladesh clothing manufacturing
industry. They have also signed the Accord
on Fire and Building Safety.
