Classroom Psychology
Classroom psychology means uses of psychology
in the classroom. It mainly involves:
 Classroom behaviour
 Class control and Class Management
Suresh Babu G
Classroom Behaviour in
School Settings
The classroom should be a learning-centered
environment in which faculty and students are
unhindered by disruptive behavior.
Behaviour management is vitally important within
the classroom. It is not just about punishing
unwanted behaviour or even rewarding desired
behaviour. Rather it is about having strategies in
place to support children to behave in ways that
help them gain the most from their schooling.
Oxley (2015) considers that building positive
learning relationships and intrinsically motivating
children to learn are important for effective
behaviour management.
Suresh Babu G
Behavioural Problems of children
in Classroom
Behavioural problems at school interfere with
lessons and disturb other students. Children who
exhibit behavioural problems invariably require
extra attention which places strain on teachers
and shows the pace at which lessons are offered
and completed. Major behavioral problems of
students are:
 Sensory processing disorder
 Aggressive students
 Inappropriate language
 Inattentive students
Suresh Babu G
Common Behavioral Problems
and its Solutions in Classroom
Irritating Behaviour (wears a hat in class,
fidgety, inattentive)
(a) Provide fidget toys.
(b) Discuss behaviour in private.
(c) Allow the student to daydream for 5-10 minutes
after completing an assignment.
Suresh Babu G
Avoiding school work (not completing or turning
in assignments)
(a) Involve the child in the problem-solving process.
(b) Indentify learning problems the child might have.
(c) Match the assignment with the skill level of the
student.
(d) Sympathise
 Arguing/Talking back
(a) Ignore minor mutterings
(b) Address academic deficits
(c) Anticipate when a student may challenge
authority and change the environment.
Common Behavioral Problems and its Solutions in Classroom
Suresh Babu G
Taking things
(a) Teach him to ask to borrow an object rather than
take it without permission.
(b) Deal with the student privately, not publicly.
(c) Identify the type of items being taken and give
the student an opportunity to earn the object.
 Angry outbursts
(a) Isolate the student and give him time to cool off
(b) If anger is common, have a crisis plan in place.
(c) Designate a place in advance where he can sit
and let off steam.
(d) Work with parents to develop a plan to help the
child cope with his anger.
Common Behavioral Problems and its Solutions in Classroom
Suresh Babu G
Not telling the truth
(a) If he stretches the truth about academic
matters, the work may be too hard or too long.
(b) If you know he’s not telling the truth, don’t ask a
question, make a statement : You hit Robert
first. If you ask a question, the student may be
tempted to make a smart comment.
Common Behavioral Problems and its Solutions in Classroom
Suresh Babu G
 Late to class
(a) Ignore it if the student is only one or two minutes
late and if lateness occurs rarely.
(b) A raised eyebrow or a statement of expectations may
be more effective than sending the student to the office.
(c) Review the students routine between classes.
 Blurting out in class
(a) If the child takes medication, talk with his parents about
making sure he doesn’t miss a dose.
(b) Give a child an alternative behaviour – have her raise
her hand, and be sure to call on her immediately to
reinforce it.
(c) Give the student a special pad for writing down her
comment, and discuss it later with her.

Classroom Management
 Classroom management is the process by which
teachers and schools create and maintain
appropriate behaviour of students in classroom
settings.
 It is the techniques teachers use to maintain
control in the classroom.
Suresh Babu G
Importance of Classroom
Management
 Establishes and sustains an orderly environment
in the classroom.
 Increases meaningful academic learning and
facilitates social and emotional growth.
 Decreases negative behaviours and increases
time spent academically engaged.
Suresh Babu G
Effective Classroom
Management Measures
Effective classroom management is based on a
learnable set of skills – teacher have to acquire
the skills.
Establish a positive relationship with the class.
Use praise to transform a students image, uplift
the entire class, and reinforce the values you
seek promote in your classroom or school
community.
Welcome feedback from your students.
Suresh Babu G
Create a safe learning environment.
Variety is the key to engaging students.
Establish the expectation that everyone must
participate in class every day.
Assessments should look forward, not back.
Stay organized and professional.
Indicate to parents the potential for growth in
their child.
