INTRODUCTION
Hand Hygiene Is The easiest and most important way to prevent spread of infection.
You use your hands for almost everything.They are easily contaminated.
Who are these?
History of Hand Washing
 The link between hand washing and health was first made almost
200 years ago.
 Ignaz Semmelweis ,adoctor working in Vienna General Hospital,
is known as the father of hand washing.
 He was first person to realise that keeping hands clean can really
help prevent diseases being passed on in 1846.
History of Hand Washing
 A few years later during the Crime an War, Florence Nightingale
was the new handwashing champion implementing handwashing
in the war hospital where she worked.
 What Semmelweis and Nightingale promoted were not widely
accepted until the 1980’s where hand washing was really
recognised nationally as away to reduce the spread of infections.
DEFINITION
Hand washing is the act of cleaning the hands with water and soap
for the purpose of removing soil or microorganisms (germs),in order
to prevent cross –contamination and minimize nosocomial
infections.
Purpose
1. To clean contaminated hands
2. To remove dirt and soil from hand.
3. Minimize number of microorganism.
4. To prevent cross and nosocomial infection.
5. Breaks the chain of infection spread.
6. To ensure patients comfort,safety and psychological well
being.
INDICATIONS
1) When hands are visible soiled.
2) Before and after caring for a patient.
3) After contact with organic material, such os feces,wound drainage
,and mucus.
4) In preparation for an invasive procedure,such as suction
catherization,or injections.
5) Before changing a dressing or having contact with open wounds.
6) Before preparing and administrating medications.
7) After removing disposable gloves.
8) Before and after using the toilet.
9) Before and after eating.
10)At the beginning and end of the shift.

IMPORTANCE OF HAND HYGIENE
 Most common mode of transmission.
 Most important factor in preventing spread of organisms.
 Reduce number of infection.
 Decrease patient length of stay.
 Decrease use of resources.
 Reduce number of deaths.

ACCORDING TO WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION(WHO) there
are ‘five moments’for washing hands:
1) Before Touching a Patient.
2) Before Clean/Aseptic Procedure.
3) After Body Fluid Exposure Risk.
4) After Touching A patient.
5) After Touching Patient Surroundings.

Equipment
1) Antimicrobial soap(liquid or bar)
2) Warm running water.
3) Paper towels/cloth towel (sterile)
4) Fingernail brush/nail cleaner.

PROCEDURE
• Wet hands under tepid running water.
• Apply enough soap or solution to cover all surfaces.
1.Rub hands plam to plam
2.Rub back of each hand with plam of other with fingers
interlaced.
3.Rub hands with fingers interlaced.
4.Rub with back of fingers to opposing palms with fingers
interlocked.
5.Rub each thumb clasped in opposite hand using a rotational
movement.
6.Rub tips of fingers in opposite palm in a circular motion.
7.Rub each wrist with opposite hand.
1.Rinse hands thoroughly with running water.
2.Use elbow to turn off tap.
3.Dry thoroughly with single –use towel.
