Chuck Close
Chuck Close was born in the U.S.
When he was 11, Close saw an
exhibition of Jackson Pollack's
abstract paintings. Afterwards, he
went home and dripped paint on
his paintings. Pollack’s artwork
helped to inspire Close’s painting
style.
Throughout his career, Close has
concentrated on painting portraits
based on photographs he has
already taken. His art style has
been called Abstract Expressionism.

Chuck Close“Long before I was physically disabled, I was learning
disabled,” Close said. “ At that time there was no such
thing as dyslexia. You were just dumb and lazy.”
In addition to dyslexia, he had neuromuscular
problems, so he couldn’t run or throw a ball. He
wanted desperately to get attention, so he decided to
focus on what he could do and not on what he could
not do.”
So he turned to art. He started his formal training as an
artist when he was eight.
Close also suffers from a condition called face
blindness. By painting portraits, he is better able to
recognize and remember faces.
“Everything that I do is a direct outgrowth of my
learning disabilities,” Close said.

Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944)
Art Style - Abstract
Born in Moscow, Russia. His family travelled a lot so he had
a chance to go to Italy and other places. He played the cello
and the piano.
He became a law professor at the university of Moscow.
He did not go to art school until he was 30.
His artistic development was shaped greatly by an
exhibition of French impressionist painters. The
impressionists used values of color and light to show their
subjects rather than painting them in fine detail. In Monet's
paintings the subject matter played a secondary role to
color. In Monet's paintings the subject matter played a
secondary role to color
He settled in Germany after World War I where he taught
art at the Bauhaus school and painted until the Nazis came
into power. At that point (1933), he went back to France
where he remained for the rest of his life.

What is Abstract Art?
• 1. How is colour used in abstract art?
• 2. What are the paintings about, ex. Animals, people, landscapes?
• 3. What kinds of shapes did the artists use in their paintings?
• 4. How did the paintings make you feel, ex., happy, sad, mad?
• 5. How do you think that the artists wanted the paintings to make you feel?
What is Abstract Art?
Abstract artists felt that paintings did not have
to show only things that were recognizable. In
their paintings they did not try to show people,
animals, or places exactly as they appeared in
the real world. They mainly used color and
shape in their paintings to show emotions.
Abstract art is not painted to look like something
specific.
