1. BASIC FUNCTIONS
1.1 Leads a shift team of Registered Nurses, Registered Midwives, and
Nursing Assistants in the provision of optimal quality nursing care within
available resources, working internal rotation of shifts.
2. PRINCIPAL DUTIES
2.1. Ensures that professional standards are maintained at all times.
2.2. During the time period for which he/she is responsible, assesses the
overall needs of the individual patients, and allocates available resources
and the nursing staff responsibilities appropriately, providing adequate
supervision and guidance where necessary.
2.3. Maintains continuity of care at the take-over and hand-over of reports,
ensuring that the communication is clear at all times.
2.4. Ensures that the staff on duty understands and observes the Najd
Hospital written policies and procedures pertaining to clinical practice and
nurse management, and monitors their implementation.
2.5. Ensures that doctors’ orders and patient management plans are followed
and that appropriate steps are taken, including immediate notification of
the Resident-in-Charge or On-Call, of any deterioration from the expected
course of the patient’s condition. Exercising advocacy and accountability
for the patient’s interest at all times.

2.6 Ensures that the appropriate records of the patient’s progress are
maintained according to the Unit’s policies and procedures.
2.7 Ensures that the necessary patient records are completed and financial
records are maintained for the Finance Department.
2.8 Responsible for the promotion of patient education, informed consent and
further explanation as required.
2.9 Assesses levels of performance of the nursing staff in the Unit and reports
to the Head Nurse as appropriate.
2.10 Anticipates, prevents and resolves any problem arising and report to the
Head Nurse; reports untoward incidents/accidents/staff sickness to the
Head Nurse.
2.11 Maintains an up-to-date record of all drugs, I.V. fluids, etc., as required
by the Pharmacy, and ensures that the rules and regulations governing
the administration, storage and custody of all drugs, in particular
controlled drugs and narcotics, are strictly observed at all times.
2.12 Makes the necessary requisitions for replenishment of consumable stock
items, instrument repairs, etc.
2.13 Acts as the Unit Head Nurse when requested by the Director of Nursing.
2.14 Participates in the discussion and the implementation of clinical or
administrative problems arising in the Unit, as part of the Quality
Assurance Program.
2.15 Ensures that all staff knows and understand department policies and
procedures concerning CPR, fire, disaster, etc.

2.16 Ensures that all staff follows correct infection control procedures at all
times and report any problems.
2.17 Provides orientation, guidance and direction, and training to new staff, and
participates in clinical teaching.
2.18 Provides and participates in on-going clinical education for all staff.
2.19 Performs any other tasks within his/her competence as directed by Head
Nurse or Nursing Director.
2.20 Follow all ACCREDITATION BODIES STANDARDS (e.g. CBAHI, JCI…etc)
related to his/her day to day work and participates actively in quality and
performance improvement activities as guided by the Total Quality
Management Department.
3. EDUCATION
3.1 Essential:
Appropriate qualification and statutory nursing registration in
the country from where recruited – RGN/BSN/RN
Relevant post-basic certificate
Valid CPR certificate
3.2 Desirable:
First-line Management Course

4. EXPERIENCE AND OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
4.1. Professional Experience:
4.1.1.Essential:
Four years post-basic experience that must include: Two years
experience as a Staff in the relevant specialties.
4.2. Specialized Knowledge/Experience:
4.2.1.Essential:
Proven clinical and management skills
4.2.2.Preferable:
Previous Middle East experience
Spoken Arabic & good command of English language
