2. What is EDI ?
Definition : Electronic Data Interchange
Exchanging data (invoices, claims, orders, TOC’s,
packaging slips, etc.) with both customers and
publishers
Makes systems “communicate” whith each other
1. translates data to a mutual agreed language / format
2. Sends the data in a mutual agreed way
Example : me and my Russian friend
3. Postman delivers the letter

Hardware : computers, (FTP) servers, mainframes…
Software : different software packages are involved
Communication infrastructure : needed to transport the
data back and forth (customer-Swets/Swets-customer)
Standards : way in which data have to be structured (e.g.
edifact, ASC X12, Swets format…)

Generate invoice from Swets’ internal system
Translate the invoice data into a transmittable format
Transmit the invoice to the customer
Translate the invoice at the customers end into a
readable format
Import and process the invoice into the customers library
or erm system
