4. Editor’s note:
“Our homes are a reflection of our personality, our sense
of aesthetics and choices. It is easy to find houses with
good designs, but turning these interior decoration ideas
into reality is the real challenge”.
5. In todays fast-paced and every and ever- changing environment, your business priorities most likely sound simi-
.lar to this: Generate new revenue stream, Enhance brand identity, and Increase customer engagement
In today’s contemporary world, architecture is not just restricted to following the prevalent trends of building
a commercial or a residential structure. It has evolved to become a pursuit of constantly redefining the trends,
incorporating the latest technology to enhance the experience of the inhabitants. With shifting demands, the
complexity of the designs has also increased. A modern residential project would comprise of villas, apartments,
clubhouses, shops and at times even office areas. Each of these components demands a unique design and has
requirements, which vary from one another, but at the same time have to be in sync with each other to create a
great experience. Thus, it is fair to say that most prevalent trend is to break away from the norm and create an
outstanding piece of architecture
A building has at least two lives – the one imagined by its maker and the life it lives afterward – and they are“
never the same”. This dichotomy between the imagined and the real is far more exacerbated the case of work-
spaces. Rapidly evolving business scenario and disruptive innovations require organization to constantly in-
novate and adapt. Architects play a crucial role in thinking about the future of workspaces that will define and
.incubate innovation for organizations

SKYLiNE ARCHiTECTSABOUT SKYLINE ARCHITECHTS
Skyline Architects is a multi-disciplinary engineering design company established in 2011. The company has
exposed its thoughtful and technical skills in diverse scopes of work extending from hotels, resorts, hospitals
and healthcare sectors, corporate office spaces, commercial buildings, educational buildings, and recreation
centers. It leaves no space for argument may it be a fresh project, new construction or renovation and extension of
standing project. Every project is undertaken with a subtle focus to fulfill the technical and financial requirements
of the client while delivering innovation and forming a comfortable working relationship with them promoting
mutual respect, honesty, and integrity.
Architecture is not mere a physical structure it has an inextricable connection with human sentiment. For us,
each architectural project is an opportunity to solve real-world challenges with a unique, inspiring, and excellent
design. We practice with the belief that architecture is more than simply a pragmatic solution for a space, or the

MD
13. expression of design for the design sake. Instead, our architectural solutions provide the iconic creations across
the country through innovation and sustainability. They are rich in ‘use value’ and ‘sign value’ for those who use
and own them respectively.
Inspired by the veteran architects of the yesteryears and using the best in modern techniques, the gifted group of
architects at Skyline is committed to excellence. This innovative approach is the reason why Skyline Architects is
today known for its imaginative and futuristic architectural designs.
VISION
The Skyline Architects is the advocate for better-built environment in Nepal, creating the connection between
‘design’ and ‘quality of life’. It aims at addressing the important issues of the field in society through responsible
architecture. The company envisions to be recognized as an esteemed architectural firm, providing high quality
design solutions by contributing to upgrade the quality of life through excellent quality services.
VALUES
Our core values are ingrained in a mission to pursue a collaborative effort to place the architect in a new height.
We believe in a fair, sustainable future where everyone thrives on a healthy planet. We also believe that the
existence is possible and meaningful in reciprocity.
We are a learning organization, committed to self-improvement, with a constant commitment to strengthening
the company, our team, and our relationships with our associates. We have mutual respect for all contributors,
and foster a collaborative and approachable environment with all of our staff, and the stakeholders. We also
strongly believe that client’s satisfaction is the key to
our success.
THE LOGO
The logo of skyline architects represents the line
between the sky and the buildings where the buildings
touch the sky while standing on the earth. It envisions
the need of vertical expansion of the buildings instead
of the horizontal. The bold faced capital alphabets in
SKYLINE boast the standing of the company among
the crowd of numerous architectural companies and
‘architects’in red color represents the family it belongs
to. The family is among the heroes which teaches the
society way to live lives. Therefore being part of the
family is a dignity demonstrated.
THE VISSIONARY FOUNDER:
THE FOUNDER/CEO
Mr. Prabin Laghu, the CEO of Skyline
Architect, was born in 1985 in a middle class
family. He is an architecture graduate (2009) with
Master degree in executive MBA (2014). Mr Laghu
started his professional career in 2009 and founded
his own company - The Skyline Architects -in 2011.
His passion on architectural arena and zeal on how
things could have been done better brought him to
this state. He is renowned for his crazy ideas in design
that sounded almost impossible but materialized
14. with a new palate. His expertise in diverse field
viz. hospitality, healthcare sector, education,
automobile and residential architecture brand his
dynamic personality. He is passionate with the
unique idea and makes deep personal sacrifices and
faces unbeatable odds to materialize it. Besides,
he is gifted with good oratory, friendly nature,
inquisitive mind, innovative thinking, and problem
solving skills as the additional assets in his architect
career. Above and beyond an innovative architect
designer, he has introduced himself as a successful
project management consultant with a delivery of
few critical projects in these days. In these years
of struggle, he has successfully owned multiple
companies including the skyline architects-
architectural and engineering design company,
Multi-axial pre-stressed concrete industry, MEP
Nepal – MEPconsulting and construction company,
Skybuilt construction company and Greenzone
– a trading company in building materials. His
achievements within a short span of time – though
are the result of constant efforts, a great deal of
hardships, and struggles– have entitled him as a
young entrepreneur of the generation and the role
model to the upcoming generations.
BECOMING MY OWN BOSS
From the very bitter experiences massed from
working in other’s company, it clicked in my mind
that perhaps I was not born to work in other’s; I
just spelled spontaneously-I don’t want to work
in someone else’s; ‘I will run my own company’.
15. Self-declaration was made but I was in a complete
vacuum. Just had an urge of design in the blood,
no exposure, no financial support, no ideas about
policies and procedures, no human resource, no
idea of writing proposals and reports, an immature
personality. To cut a long story short, nothing was
there except zeal to be an owner. Nevertheless,
I chose a different path and that made all the
differences.
Here I commenced the journey, journey of sweat,
tears, blood and architecture. With no PR, it seemed
impossible to find any project. But somehow luck
started sprinkling in the form of a gate design
project, a boundary wall, a dog house, an individual
residential unit. Working 20 hours a day jolting on
same drawing sheet; sleeping in office floor; living
in energy drinks and away from family and society
was the lifestyle for next 2-3 years.
I had to go through quite insurmountable odd
situations. I still remember those awkward situations
when I felt humiliated with what I could afford to
wear. Having a single pair of pants and a black shirt,
slippers on my feet, I went to formal meetings to sign
agreements; drought in rain. They remarked ‘at least
you would wear some reasonable formal attire in such
occasions’. Another situation was worst when I won
a competition and was invited to present the design
to a mass. Having offered with big applause, I was
taken to a private and commented the same by the key
person. Then I decided to gift myself a set of suit and
a car (definitely in loan). I found it really worked out.
FACING BIGGEST CHALLENGES:
We see opportunity in every challenge, we find new
solutions in every problem. However, an architect
company - being located in Nepal- can’t do away
with prevailing status quos that hinder our leap.
As every challenge comes with an opportunity and
every problem leaves a solution, we orient our team to
be prepared for the same, face any sort of challenges
and adapt as soon as possible.
We encourage them to work smart, not hard.
Visualize the client’s expectations so that no change
is required to be made later.
We set a clear matrix of priority and use heat maps
to decide what urgent is and what needs to be done
immediately.
We follow milestones.
We design the communication route and the office
system as simple and as fluid as possible so that it
would never be a barrier for the immediate execution
of the idea.
THINKING OUT OF THE BOX:
We believe that if we walk on the beaten path we
end up with a destination where many others have
already been. Instead, if we make a new trail –it may
be full of risks and uncertainties– it takes us to a new
destination. So walking off the beaten path is what
thinking outside of the box is. When we start thinking
outside of the box the problems remain no more
problems rather the source of new way-outs. We have
a series of such examples where we thought/practiced
outside of the box. These ideas have helped the client
and industry in a significant way.
16. Cave Hotel in Pokhara: we had a client wanting a hotel
but had a limited, odd piece of land. It was a small
hillock. The limited lowland was not sufficient for the
construction. So we came up with an idea of a Cave
Hotel, where we designed few of the rooms creating
burrows/tunnels in the hillock. We set up a 50 ft. high
thrilling swing at the top of the hill. The project is sure
to end with a package of unique experience with nature,
adventure, and hospitality.
Rooftop Parking: One of the major problems is city
area is parking. Most of the commercial buildings
have used their basement for parking purpose which is
commercially more valuable than the rooftops that go
almost unused. Hence, we thought of arranging parking
area at the top so that the unused area will be utilized
and the basement can be rented for higher earning.
Hanging Gardens: The land price in city area has gone
up like anything. Commoners can’t afford land for
gardening whereas the balcony areas (which are not
even counted in FAR) go just vacant. So we have been
designing the buildings with gardens in balcony which
adds the aesthetic value as well as maintains greenery.
Cocoon Hotel: Instead of clearing trees for building
hotels/resorts why not build a hotel using the same
trees? We designed a cocoon hotel hanging in the midst
of private forest. It provides an experience of living in
and with the nature including hunting services within
the resort forest.
BEATING THE COMPETITION:
For an effective tackle with the competition, one must
design a network of skilled, like minded employees
who support each other in the accomplishment of the
corporate goals and the delivery of collaborative service.
Neverrunaratrace: Fromtheveryearlydaysofstruggle,
I have always envisioned the company to be positioned
as a challenger to competitions. I never competed in
the crowd. Among the hundred companies, I prefer to
compete with top ten companies, may it be in ideas or
dealing a new business. If there are ten competitions,
compete with the top three. Qualify yourself in such a
way that you are automatically shortlisted.
Work honestly and show it to your clients: For an
entrepreneur, honesty and integrity are most important
assets and the soul of entrepreneurship. I always accept
my weakness or any mistakes and act to resolve it rather
than covering or defensing the faults. ‘No matter what
happens in the battlefield of business if we are honest
we never lose’ we firmly believe in this statement.
Partner with best renowned engineers in your team:
In today’s globalized competitive society, if we plan
to walk alone perhaps we get somewhere lost. Partner
with the best people available in the market. Capitalize
their good will to your business.
Give a unique experience to your clients: Everyone
likes to be unique, looked and judged unique. So
sometimes surprise the clients with architectural
models, sometimes make illustration in walkthrough,
and make them feel different even by using technology
- now in virtual reality.
Share your core vision: we share our visions about
city architecture, vision for good cities, about quality
of lives and opinion on how the things are going on,
how the government is dealing these issues, how the
ongoing practices can be altered or made better. This
will attract the clientele and will generate respect for
our thinkings.
Never work only for money as they do: Let’s not expect
that everything is to be returned in monetary value.
Let’s do some favors to our clients, they will value our
benevolence too. But we must make sure the limits.
There is a thin line between being open heated and
being exploited.
Kill your darlings: Too much attachment with anything
is bad. Whenever I or the team is stuck in any design
process, I just tell them to kill their darlings. Sometimes
17. we tend to love something so much that we get blinded
with the impression that it is the best thing on earth.
Unknowingly we keep advocating for the evils that we
consider as our loved. So we have to sometimes keep
aside our beloved element and try to bring in some new
elements which by incidence might prove to be blessing.
MAKING THE INDUSTRY BETTER:
An individual cannot change the entire system but is
enough for a good beginning. To make the industry
better we must address the fundamental challenges
mentioned earlier.
• Educating the clients about importance of architects
not only for their buildings but for the society;
• Since architecture is one of the most responsible
element of culture and environment, we need to select
and use environment friendly, low energy consuming
technologies and materials;
• Inspiring clients to think beyond their building. Let
them think the building in midst of entire urban context.
A private building is still not a private property. It
belongs to the city;
• Work in full ethics to match the morale of bylaws,
standard international practices; let’s demand the fee
and not expect beyond that;
• Contributing in the formulation and implementation
of law; we can suggest and participate in revision of
bylaws;
• Try something different, let the team experiment new
ideas, and encourage them to try innovation, let them
fail.
• Help employee to balance personal and professional
life, architecture is too much intense job.
18.
19. TODAY’S INDUSTRY SCENARIO:
A decades ago, hiring an architect to design a building
was super luxury. It was primarily managed by the
contractors followed by the sub-engineers and civil
engineers. So the scenario of architecture industry
as a profession is a recent phenomenon. Industry is
growing since past decade. The concept of hiring
an architect has just been general practice. The
devastating earthquake in 2015 infused the importance
of proper structural design of a building for safety
among the general public. This increased the demands
of architectural designs and helped in the growth of
the industry. Unfortunately, at present, a number of
factors are abating the growth of the industry in its
very infancy.
The entry of young and raw (just graduate) competitors
is distorting the market and driving the cities towards
more rampant direction. Similarly, the provisions
mentioned in laws and byelaws are volatile and
ambiguous. Since the bylaws are not concrete and keep
on changing they have created a space for manipulation
of law for personal benefits and to impose vested
interests. Moreover, the industry has become too much
commercial crossing the ethical boundaries, buildings
are self-centric. Buildings are being isolated from the
built environment and the influence of modernism
has killed the values of our cultures and heritages.
Practitioners are earning at the cost of environmental
and cultural loss. Because of such practitioners the
social recognition and the morale of ethical architects
has gone down.

Building a home is a lifelong dream for many! While decorating one’s own home interiors can be fun,
most people leave it to the hands of ‘experts’ in an attempt to explore the ocean of designs beyond their
world. But more often than not, despite spending lakhs, they end up disappointed at some aspect of
the design. Focusing on even the tiniest details, Aarchion, nullifies any such disappointment by keenly
studying clients’ taste of design, budget & deadline, and employing cutting-edge designs, materials &

Taking competition as a catalyst
Most of the people in India have today
become very sentient about the aesthetic
value of their residential and commercial
spaces and they want the best when it comes
to home décor. Only because of this reason,
people are willing to spend their wealth on
interior designing of their homes. There are
a number of reputed interior designers in the
country, who specialize at providing the best
designs for the homes of their clients. Interior
designers play an important role as without
a proper colour and decoration inside the
particular flat or commercial properties, the
property will not be suitable to reside. The
important fact is creating beautiful spaces
isn’t easy.

only in India but in foreign lands as well. His spiritual
belief leads to humbleness and respectful connection
with his clients and their projects, which also reflects
in his design. He has played a major role in lifting the
firm to the height it is at today.
Another Principal Architect of Arch 10, Dilraj Kaur,
is a well-seasoned leader with over 18 years of
experience in the field of architecture and planning.
She has been instrumental in spatial planning and its
effectiveness of space design and also holds a position
of H.O.D. in one of the leading Interior schools of
India. She has been one of the significant ingredients
in Arch 10’s success.
Face of industry today:
Some time back, interior design was the word used
to define a good taste in décor. Today, it is more than
just choosing the right colors and fabrics to be used.
It is meant to make a place aesthetically pleasant
while using it more efficaciously. Therefore, interior
decorating and designing have become an important
aspect to take care of, when building a home. As a
famous designer, Mark Hampton, once said, “Real

Some people have a natural eye for design, but most
do not. This is where professionals step-in.
Benefiting clients:
Its clients admire the design approach of Arch 10,
which starts with research and design’s various
possibilities for a particular space requirement

Challenges:
“India has been a challenging market in terms of doing
any business at the same time it has the maximum
opportunities to showcase one’s approach and
product. We had our share of both of them. It’s
important to keep on believing and sailing with
all mighty blessings to move on,” says Sandeep.
Initially, the company faced various difficulties,
but that gracefully overcome them. Today, Arch
10 looks towards the new India, transforming and
upgrading the thought process of individual to the
latest technologies and its usage in the interiors as
well as architectural practices.

Software Programs
to Download in 2020
Whether you are running a 200-person firm or
just starting out as a solopreneur, using the best
interior design software will go a long way toward
helping you achieve success.
You already know that the best projects are
accomplished when designers, clients, and vendors are
all on board from the get-go; now it is time to apply
that level of organization and collaboration to the back
end of your business too. Solid design software will
help you not only put together spectacular creative
work, but also run your business smoothly behind the
scenes. That means project management, financial
organization, and productivity-boosting programs
that will help you get your work done on time and on
budget. Here are 18 of the best interior design software
programs to use now.
Design software:
Autodesk AutoCAD LT
AutoCAD LT is one of the most popular software
applications used by interior designers, architects,
engineers, construction professionals, and more. This
reliable software allows professionals to design, draft,
and document precise drawings with 2D geometry.
A comprehensive suite of editing and annotation
tools and an intuitive user interface are what make
this a top designer pick. An integrated AutoCAD
web application with a simplified interface—and
no software installation required—lets you work on
sketches online from almost any computer. With the
mobile app, users can view, edit, annotate, and create
drawings anytime, even offline, on a smartphone or
tablet.
SketchUp Pro
With SketchUp Pro’s modeling suite, design
professionals will find fast, easy 3D modeling for
anything from passive buildings to contemporary
furnishings. Create detailed scaled drawings in 2D,
then add custom styles and materials that will bring
your vision to the screen. SketchUp integrates with
virtual reality applications (including Microsoft
HoloLens, HTC Vive, and Oculus), so you can walk
clients through projects in astounding detail. In
addition to its classic desktop software, SketchUp also
offers a web tool and unlimited cloud storage, so you
can easily store, collaborate, and share work.
TurboCAD
The latest versions of TurboCAD offer professional
software for experienced 2D and 3D CAD users.
The architectural design suite includes parametric
architectural objects, sections, and elevations, with
increased functionality to both the architectural and
mechanical areas of the program. Available for both
Mac and Windows operating systems, TurboCAD bills
itself as “a powerful alternative” to AutoCAD LT, and
setup wizards promise a simple transition for those
switching from one to the other.
Autodesk 3ds Max
Ready to take full artistic control of your renderings?
With Autodesk’s 3ds Max, clients will experience
your proposed work in beautiful, high-tech detail. The
software delivers superb graphics for 3D animations
and models, as well as games and images. Use the tool

33. Photography software:
Adobe Photoshop
Whether you snap hundreds of photos a day to file
away for inspiration, are a social media whiz, or
need to edit professional photographs of your design
work, most interiors firms will benefit from the use
of Adobe Photoshop. The oldest and most prominent
photo software on the market is also recognized as
the industry leader for enhancing and organizing
photos. With Photoshop, you can adjust clarity, color,
and tone, manipulate effects, or add graphics to your
imagery. If you have great pictures and want to take
them to the next level, Photoshop is a must-have.
As part of Adobe’s Creative Cloud of services, it is
available as a subscription service at varying price
points.
Adobe Capture
If you are obsessed with color and use photography to
jog your memory or get inspired, Adobe Capture can
unlock a new world from your mobile device. This
powerful app transforms images into color themes,
patterns, materials, and vector-based shapes. Carry
those assets into other desktop and mobile apps—such
as Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dimension—to use
them across a multitude of creative endeavors and
platforms.
Project management software:
Fuigo
When you are serious about taking your design
business to the next level, you need great project
management software to get there. Fuigo can
schedule and track invoices and payments. In addition,
it offers a trade-only marketplace with access to more
than 100 top brand. Streamline sourcing, purchasing,
tracking, and billing with this all-in-one tool that

much bigger ones.
ClickUp

interior designers, this software can really rock.
Design-specific templates are geared specifically for
the biz, and the program’s time-tracking tools integrate
with multiple other apps. Most notably, Click Up’s
comprehensive project management software can help
you organize everything at a super-high level, from
workflow and business goals to time management and
task lists. In addition, because it allows everyone on
your team to customize their own views and boards,
individual users can tweak the software to best suit
their productivity type. Collaborate across a broad
range of teams using the outstanding tools for process,

“Interior design that works is design that helps the client’s the way the owner has
envisioned, and the way the customers would like, its design that bases its aesthetics

Kamran sheikh - the maestro of interior and
hospitality design has foregrounded the new era of
designing with his more than 30 years of domestic and
international experience and channeled his creativity
into a firm that made its debut in 1984.
Endeavors to emerge new forms and transcend the
conventional boundaries with its avant-garde approach,
kamran sheikh interior design firm handles the interior
and hospitality designs of projects ranging from
restaurants to boutiques, shops and hospitals.
Today’s industry scenario:
In today’s contemporary world, architecture is not just
restricted to following the prevalent trends of building
a commercial or a residential structure. It has evolved
to become a pursuit of constantly redefining the trends,
incorporating the latest technology to enhance the
experience of the inhabitants. With shifting demands,
the complexity of the designs has also increased. A
modern residential project would comprise of villas,
apartments, clubhouses, shops and at times even office
areas. Each of these components demands a unique
design and has requirements, which vary from one
another, but at the same time have to be in sync with
each other to create a great experience. Thus, it is fair to
say that most prevalent trend is to break away from the
norm and create an outstanding piece of architecture

their homes and business interior ventures for more

Satisfying customers is our driving force and exceeding
their expectations is our mission. With the rationale that
runs right through our business, we constantly evaluate
our performance on the volume of gratification and
success we deliver to our customers through services.
Benefiting clients:
We believe consideration of any design firm should
go beyond design itself. Does the firm understand
the client’s point of view and the client’s customers,
the business goals, and problems of a particular
organization. Have they produced designs that work?
Interior design that works is design that helps the client
is the way the owner has envisioned, and the way the
customers would like, its design that bases its aesthetics
on achieving specific functional requirements. Interior
design that works is design with the bottom line clearly
in mind.
Every project represents the client’s investment. To be
successful to them, it must produce a return, in addition
to creating a smoothly functioning physical and
psychological environment for a particular clientele that
reflects the owner’s point of view. In addition, interior
design that works must do so within a client’s budget.
Whatever its size. That is our difference. Understanding
clients, client’s market, and creating design that works.

41. The changing architecture culture in modern India,
both as a lifestyle and as a profession, has been eye-
opening. In terms of lifestyle, we have never predicted
to what extent architecture and design could affect us,
as well as the society and culture in which we live, nor
have we predicted how deeply symbolic they would
become of our beliefs and attitudes. As a profession, the
huge wave of development and technology that caused
us to try and ape everything that did not belong to us has
caused us to question and search for our own identity,
and has led us to revisit the solid traditional roots and
foundations of Indian architecture.
The ‘Architect’ in Architecture
Speaking for the profession in India, it is imperative
that the role of the architect be acknowledged more
strongly, especially in the planning of cities. The
Indian government’s massive Smart Cities Mission,
which aims to develop 100 sustainable and citizen-
friendly cities all over the country, has done very little
to include architectural voices into the conversation.
Same goes for our heritage structures that are being
replaced by modern structures despite resistance shown
by architects.
As a result, architects are making efforts and are
regularly creating platforms that can give way to
solutions to better architecture.
Women’s participation in the field is definitely growing
worldwide, but particularly so in India, where they are
contributing to architecture and planning in a myriad of
ways and are holding authoritative positions. This is a
far cry from the gender-biased profession architecture
was in India even a decade back. Needless to say,
on many forums, it is the women who are initiating
changes.
The Need to See ‘ Cities ‘ So rather than ‘ Buildings’
Many more of India’s major cities are facing housing,
critical planning and sanitation problems, though little
attention is paid to them. Although smaller towns tend
to be great examples, urban planning always needs to
be looked from scratch. India has a number of architects
who concentrated on incorporating design and urban
planning. Numerous architects in the country have
learned that operating in silos and alone might not fit
for their own buildings. Many are beginning to look
at the larger picture within their cities, and rather than
focusing solely on individual projects, are seeing the
need for architecture to engage with cities.
The Shift in Design Sensibilities
The rising economy and population have led to huge
housing needs, driving the scale of architecture work
and creating massive opportunities in the country. It is
also one of the reasons why it has increased the number
of international architectural companies employed in
India. The ability to build and make a difference in India
has become enormous in the wake of towns burdened
by lack of infrastructure. This has also contributed to
an increasing number of Indian architects who have
returned to India to practice and be part of the country’s
change since completing their architectural education
overseas.
Glass,steelandaluminiummightremainas‘fashionable’
materials, but there has been a shift in sensibilities with
the revival of Indian crafts and the use of natural and
alternative materials such as brick, mud, clay, bamboo,
wood, stone, etc. Significantly, many architects are
innovatively bringing forward these materials to create
statements.
To conclude, Indian architecture is in a state of
flux where we have everything—explorations,
opportunities, experiments and evolved sensibilities—
and a step in the right direction could yield great results
and maybe help in re-discovering what we have lost.
The need of the hour is to not be carried away with
what is happening around us, but to understand our
needs, our expectations, our roots and work towards an
architecture that adapts to changing lifestyles but stays
true to its values and identity; that communicates to
people and shapes our society; that helps in building
memories and gives us buildings and spaces that can
sustain till posterity.

“Based on the brief awarded, the young and creative
company aims at creating a unique interior experience

the right combination of the visual appeal and the right

Given the budget, which is an essential and important
factor in designing a space, we have always had a

Ambitious persona:
I am from a services background with my father being
a decorated senior naval officer from the Indian Navy.
We are three sisters but raised no less than boys,

important.
I am happily married to a person who is highly

in the corporate sector and holds a very senior position
in a MNC
Upon graduating from the Interiors School in 1987,
she was handpicked by Manasara’s Executive Director,
one of the country’s leading Interior Design Houses.
After getting enough exposure at Manasara, the
promoters of “Dream City” offered her a challenging
opportunity and she was appointed by them as senior
advisor to their design firm “Craftsmen.” This firm’s
programs were performed mostly on turnkey basis.
She was experienced operating at the grass root level

deadlines and function within budgets. Under her

supervision, the business diversified from producing
panel doors and windows to furniture of excellent
quality and carried out a range of Turnkey Basis
initiatives. Payal Kapoor says in her own words, “I
thought like my imagination and reputation as an
interior designer was being violated despite pouring
my energies into it. I decided to launch my own
business in 1991 and set up my own design company
under the banner “Visions.”
Accepting challenges:
Selling big ideas is one of the biggest challenges
young interior designers face. Often you only have
photos or a floor plan to try and express the feeling
of a whole room. Something impossible to market
does not happen biologically. Do whatever you need
to get your feelings out. From fabric samples to
mood boards, your customers will always appreciate
the extra effort to understand them. In the initial
phase, from invoices to purchase orders, maintaining
books was also a challenge, and accounting can get
overwhelming. The biggest challenge was getting
the payments from the client on time, even after the
project was completed on time.
Biggest challenge in achieving success has been
that I come from a totally non-business set up and
background. To learn the nuances of this trade,
financials and marketing apart from the academic side,
has been a challenge. After the formative years, one
learns of course and overcomes the challenges.
The biggest challenge has been to keep my team
motivated by exposing them to new trends, styles,
techniques which I pick up from my inbound and my
international travels.
Since we do a lot of turnkey projects, to keep my team
to stick to timelines and yet deliver a product with
a good workmanship can be tricky at times as we at
times work 3 shifts for commercial projects.
However, to work honestly, within timelines, financial
constraints, and an above board product delivery as per
our commitments is always a challenge.
This is essentially a male dominated industry. Not that
gender matters in any field today as, as long as you
deliver well within the set guidelines and constraints,
you get recognition. It is only a matter of time! Hard
work and honesty always pay in the long run.
Today’s industrial scenario:
Initially, the structures that were built around the globe
offered instructive examples of sustainable solutions
to problem building. Currently, the modern approach
to interior and construction has culminated in the
standardization and duplication of projects owing to
easy internet connectivity. In my opinion, a lot of work
currently has arisen from the philosophy of “cut-copy-
paste.” I still consider that sensitivity to nature is what
is lost today and that is of great concern. Based on the
45January 2020
46. context, venue, environment and financial constraints,
we specialize in creating a new and unique experience
and room for each customer.
But we the organization thrives on designing healthy
structures that optimize natural light and ventilation,
as well as offering courtyards or landscaped gardens
whenever possible, rather than pursuing the pattern
of concrete jungles construction. We are trying to use
the materials available locally which are environment
sensitive and relevant.
Benefiting clients:
Throughout our profession, we are above board and
ensure complete transparency, consumer satisfaction
element at all stages and work hand in hand as a team.
Since finishing over 500 ventures in various fields of
leisure, housing, institutes, lounges, spas, trains and
restaurants, we plan to do the interior facelift in varied
fields all over the world.
We assume one person with an idea is equivalent to
one thousand who only have opinions. At visions,
we constantly strive to provide our clients with high-
quality Interior Services at the most reasonable prices.
This commitment to quality has led us to implement in
our organization a Total Quality Management (TQM)
program, we also intend to achieve ISO status soon,
and this will act as a further affirmation of our quality
and make us one of the few indoor design houses in
the world to have an ISO status. Each project is new
and our projects are not repetitive.
Differentiating factor:
At Visions, we believe in keeping both the concept
and the products used clear. Our aim is to provide
consumers with a long-term solution in terms of low
maintenance, for which we recommend the use of
those products that are environmentally friendly and
provide users with a cleaner and more comfortable
place. Using a lot of glass in outdoor windows, for
example, can certainly bring a lot of natural light,
but Glass absorbs heat and acts as a greenhouse, so
it is not suitable for hot climates. Therefore, every
design is subjective to the location, climate, customer
choice and budget. Given that we are expected to
build efficiently in many situations, we strive not
to compromise on the design’s individuality and
creativeness.
Using the philosophy that less is more and having the
budget in mind, we have always come up with a new
and innovative concept with the aid of using different
materials, which might be cheaper in cost but help to
achieve a positive overall design experience. We are
also proud to work on customer design brief, budgets
and timelines while maintaining intact, trendy and
fresh our aesthetic credibility.
Current projects:
We are fortunate to have had the opportunity to work
46 January 2020
47. on a variety of projects – cars, planes, simulators,
heritage palace property and fashionable hotels, super
luxury homes, institutes, colleges, hospitals, shopping
malls, pubs, bars and nightclubs. Therefore, we do not
capsulate in a typical mold or limit ourselves to being
generic. We like to innovate, function and put our best
foot forward on consultant or turnkey basis for all
sorts of architectural interiors project.
It has been a little over 30 years Payal Kapoor have
been in this profession and been working now for over
3 decades.
For her each project is important irrespective of its
scale and size.
The very fact that I endorse it and agree to be the one
to associate with it, means I need to give it my 100%
recently she have completed the following projects
The Savoy Mussorrie UK ITC, Welcomgroup. We
have just revamped and refurbished the ballroom, and
suites of the hotel are being done up.
-A 9 acre property At Udaipur for a wedding resort is
near completion done up in a raj era Mewar style.
-Banquet halls in Delhi have been given a facelift in a
contemporary style.
-We did luxury villas for a mini city at outskirts of
Delhi.
-Modern style club resort in a modern contemporary
style.
- Modern commercial corporate office space /building.
-Suite stack at a luxury hotel in Delhi - The Aman
Lodhi
-Currently we are designing a 100 room 4 star
contemporary style property.
-Few govt and semi govt owned resorts
- center in the heart of South Delhi
-Few hi end residences for pvt clients in Delhi
-Also refurbishing and renovating a heritage palace in
Rajasthan.
Ahead of the Curve:
We believe this sector is for highly focused, creative,
hard-working and trustworthy practitioners who are
willing to grow over time. It needs headwork, time and
patterns constant personal growth. Therefore, anyone
who is stagnant and unfocused will lose out over time.
Competition expands through heaps and bounds,
which is why this area requires constant analysis,
keeping up with patterns, outlets and ever-growing
products in the industry. Even since the landscape is
so diminishing due to social media and internet, one
needs the ability to quickly adapt, imbibe, pass over
time, and set patterns in this area as front-runners.
Being social worker:
As a qualified architectural interior design consultant,
she would apart from my work definitely try and
improve the life in cities environmentally.
That would mean better civic amenities designed in a
constructive manner and more organized.
For A lot of contribution towards sprucing up of our
cities can be done by upgrading facilities in colonies
like keeping rear streets clean, installing dust bins,
plantations etc.
This goes more in terms of my line of work though
socially a lot still needs to be done

50. What Will the Architecture and Interior
Design Profession Look Like 10 Years in
the Future?
To gauge where the industry is headed in the decade
ahead, though 2030 may seem far off, in many cases
the trends and innovations that will continue to
transform the business are already in our midst.
Design Will Be Increasingly Digital:
Once reserved largely for the wealthy, interior design
services are gradually becoming available to almost
everyone. Your budget won’t determine whether you
can have a home you like or not,” “There will be a
solution for everyone, at every budget category.”
Designing tools will become increasingly sophisticated
in the decade ahead. “It’s going to provide designers
with efficiencies that help them do more designing
rather than the operations, communications, tracking,
order management then the historical years back.
As visualization apps and communication tools
continue to improve, designing rooms in the virtual
realm with far-flung designers will also become
increasingly easy and attractive.
Indeed, as technology improves, expects 3D
visualization, including advances in the augmented
reality and virtual reality services already offered
by some start-ups, to be at the heart of most design
decisions. “Ten years from now, people will use
visualization for buying furniture no matter whether
they’re going into a store to buy a piece, trying to lay
out an entire room, or hiring an interior designer. It is
going to be an expected part of the flow. “You’ll be
able to take a few pictures of your room, and it will be
developed into a 3D model in a couple of seconds.”
Originality Will Be More Important Than Ever:
There will always be a market of people who want
something that isn’t seen everywhere, and that isn’t
available to everyone,
“People in the high-end, will look further for novel
things, one-of-a-kind things, and commissioned
pieces. In the last number of years, we have seen an
expansion of creative people working at a small scale,
doing really beautiful one-off work. That kind of
craftsmanship will become even more prized.”
Social Media Will Mean Business:
Over the past decade, social media has changed from
online curiosity to big business. For designers, it is
now an effective way to showcase completed projects,
highlight new product launches, and ultimately meet
clients. In many cases, “it’s become their portfolio,
50 January 2020
51. “It’s going to get more and more refined and less
and less haphazard. “You will be able to walk a real
home or a conceptual home using visualization and
virtual reality on a social media platform,” “That
will impact the way that designers pitch clients.” At
the same time, by allowing them to tell their stories
in such a rich way, “designers are going to go the
way of the celebrity chef. Ten years ago, chefs
were not celebrities, but TV made them famous.
Imagining interior designers will follow.
Brick-and-Mortar Will Get Smarter:
Brick-and-mortar retailers, innovative in-store
technology, smart shopping, customer behavior. In
the present digital era, brick-and-mortar retailing
is being challenged to become smarter and provide
greater value to both consumers and retailers. As
e-commerce sites have nibbled at the profits of
traditional shopping giants, the retail landscape has
undergone its most radical change in a century. But
that doesn’t mean brick-and-mortar retail is dead—
there’s a reason digitally driven companies continue
to open newer, bigger stores in select locations.
Online Retail Will Get Slicker:
More consumers have fueled internet retail growth
each year using fast Broadband connections and the
profusion of easier, more navigable Web sites that
encourage browsing and buying online. Slicker Web
sites, with better use of imaging that lets consumers
see up-close views of the products. They are making
the shopping experience more natural.
Antiques Will Make a Comeback:
Antiques, in general, have had a difficult run over
the past 10 years, as once fashionable periods
and designers fell out of favor and collectors
increasingly focused on contemporary works.
However, much like the stock market is cyclical;
many industry watchers say that antiques are
overdue for a comeback. “As design becomes
mainstream, people are going to want individuality
and the special touch that will make their interiors
remarkable

The drive for creativity and with a vision to bring in
more creativity in the corporate architecture space,
Swapnil Sawant and Padmapani Tilwe collaborated to
establish Worksphere Architects. During the inception,
Worksphere was the vision of two individuals.
Thereafter, Vibha Ponkshe, Urvi Lodaya and Rajesh
Mehra joined subsequently.
The firm started operating from a small space with
initial assignments being received on goodwill.
However, starting from the scratch is never an easy
task. It calls for untiring and incessant hard work, and
the team left no stone unturned to turn their dream into
reality.
Initial struggle:
“There had been periods of sheer joy as recognition
came from the unceasing effort. However, not every
chapter in a success story speaks of moments of
elation. There were also occasions when tension on
determination worked, when focus became blurred,
and task seemed to be heading into oblivion. Constant
work pressure and slow returns caused disillusion and
the thought, “Was this all a mistake? “Started striking.
Breaking away from a secured job to start out on our
own, with just a vision, was not proving to be a very
prolific move. But hope is what still remains even
when everything else disappears. Turning each failure
into a stepping-stone, we slowly and steadily, kept
marching ahead. And soon, success set in.

53. Ahead of the Curve:
Worksphere was not a first company product mover.
When the company was founded, it had to compete
with large firms that were nearly ten years old. While
being a young company, the domain of work was eager
to seize opportunities and maximize the resources.
Worksphere’s best way to capture a break was by
transforming its vulnerability into its power.
Worksphere repositioned itself as ‘ Company Enablers
‘ from Architects. “We have come up with a unique
method where we as company enablers started to help
consumers reach their business goals.
Now our designs were proven more profitable
then competition, “speaks Rajesh Mehra, Director,
Worksphere Architects. This approach of Worksphere
has been the game changer. The joint venture of two
men which started from an 80 sq.ft.garage is now an
over 40-strong organization of efficient architects and
technocrats, specializing in delivering value.
Winning the clients:
“The biggest challenge confronting the company was
recognizing the expectations of the clients. We helped
them to segregate desires and their wishes through our
communication classroom”
The unique pre designed workshop helps clients
to identify their quantitative and qualitative needs
and through psychometric methodologies, the firm
identifies the deep aspirations and quantifies them into
a well-documented design program. Core competency
of Worksphere lies in its matured design approach.
Seldom does a project shoot in time and cost. This has
helped Worksphere sustain its repeat clients.
Reaching the Definite Destination:
Worksphere Architect’s success should be attributed
to its philosophy of listening to the clients keenly
and looking into the minutest detail. It has managed
to preserve and propagate its foundation principles
and has successfully carved a niche for itself in the
world of corporate interiors. Today, Worksphere
boasts of an impressive and diverse clientele which
includes Tata Group, Aditya Birla Group, Reliance,
Bharti Enterprises, Standard Chartered, HSBC, Citi
Bank, Axis Bank, SBI and many more. With over
450 projects to its credit across 50 locations in India,
Worksphere is creating inspiring environment which
is not merely jigsaw fitting of space. The firm ensures
a stress-free working environment for its people,
inspiring them to put in their best. The energy and
enthusiasm is obviously reflected in their work. Time
and again, the team of Worksphere has delighted its
clients with its designs and economically viable design
solutions.
Differentiating factor:
Worksphere assumes “Cost = Performance – Quantity”
in the formula. The department is constantly working
to get ‘ Value for Money ‘ on the table. “Our strength
was to work across budgets and make the constraint
beautiful and this made us favorite among our
customers.
This has earned us repeat business from all our
clients,” says Urvi Lodaya, Head- Projects,
Worksphere Architects. Worksphere is dedicated to
attending to the client’s whispering needs, making a
fresh approach towards defining his objectives and
application of systematic methodology to deliver
value. We believe – ‘A good design is all about
listening to the client and applying our heart’ and we
are determined to work with this notion in years to
come,”
