Kaiser nursing shift changes:
Permanente employees, their Design Thinking Intrapreneurs, studied how nurses interacted with patients and each other. They observed in practice a number of behaviors that represented key opportunities for improvement. One key opportunity was shift changes:
they were slow and left room for errors. They considered a multitude of different possible approaches, ran experiments, and landed on some new shift change principles and a new process. The results were amazing. The new shift change process cut the time from
40 minutes to 12. Even more critically, the team reduced errors during information transfer, thereby increasing patient confidence.
Google’s “The Garage” is a lab set up for employees to use their 20% time to express their creativity
The Garage is absolutely packed with equipment, from 3D printers to shop vacs to sewing machines to a CNC milling machine
Employees can take classes on how to use the equipment
But for the Garage to operate requires full-time employees to manage and maintain.
