They observed in practice a number of behaviors that represented key opportunities for improvement. One key opportunity was shift changes: they were slow and left room for errors. They considered a multitude of different possible approaches, ran experiments, and landed on some new shift change principles and a new process. The results were amazing. The new shift change process cut the time from 40 minutes to 12. Even more critically, the team reduced errors during information transfer, thereby increasing patient confidence.
