Usage of water in industry

  1. 1. 1
  2. 2. ENGINEERI NG CHEMISTRY Usage of water in industry 2
  3. 3. Introduction of Water  Water, a substance composed of the chemical elements hydrogen and oxygen and existing in gaseous, liquid, and solid states 3
  4. 4.  Plentiful and most essential for the human beings. 4
  5. 5. Types of water 1. Distilled water 2. Demineralized water 3. Boiler Feed Water(BFW) 4. Service water 5. Chilled water 5
  6. 6. 1. Distilled water  Distilled water is water that has had many of its impurities removed by distillation.  Distillation involves boiling the water and then condensing the steam into a clean container. 6
  7. 7. Uses of Distilled water  Automobiles  Laboratory  Medical field  Soap Industry  Cosmetic Industry 7
  8. 8. 2. Demineralised water  Demineralized water is specially purified water that has had most or all of its mineral and salt ions removed.  It is also known as Deionized water, DI or Demin water. 8
  9. 9. Uses of Demineralised water  Wash water for computer chip manufacture, and other microelectronics  Automotive uses  Pharmaceutical manufacturing  Cosmetics  Aquariums  Fire extinguishers 9
  10. 10. 3. Boiler Feed Water(BFW)  Boiler feed water is an essential part of boiler operations.  The general process is given as, 10
  11. 11. Uses of Boiler Feed Water(BFW)  Boiler water is treated to prevent corrosion and scaling etc.  It is mainly used by the boilers to make the steams of different pressures and temperatures. 11
  12. 12. 4. Service water  Service water is water that does not meet drinking water quality standards. 12
  13. 13. Uses of Service water  Depending on the application, the service water must be treated according to the requirements of it use, such as:  Industrial  Agricultural  Domestic  Service water reduces corrosion of equipment and lessens overhead cost. 13
  14. 14. 5. Chilled water  Chilled water is a commonly used to cool a building's air and equipment.  The temperature of chilled water (between 4° and 7°C (39-44 °F). 14
  15. 15. Uses of chilled water  In industry, the water chillers is the use of water cooling instead of air cooling.  Chilled water is used to cool and dehumidify air at commercial and industrial level  The chilled water absorbs the heat from the building. It then returns to the chiller where the chiller removes the heat from the water using the refrigeration process. . 15
