An Introduction
to Talents and
Strengths
 The Call- “He does not summon disciples as a
faceless crowd but as unique individuals.”
 “Every human life, every personal vocation, is
unique.” Pg 13
“…stewardship of the
gift of talent means
nurturing, developing
and using the God-
given abilities and
characteristics that
help define “who we
are” as individual
persons.” Pg 66
“Our talents are the special
blessings that each of us has
received from a loving Creator
who prizes the diversity and
abundant variety of all
creation.” Pg 66
“When we volunteer to help others by sharing
our talents with them, we give them
something far more precious than our time or
money. We give them something of
ourselves, an intimate sharing of “who we
are”, for the good of others.” Pg 66
 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ
Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in
advance for us to do. Eph 2:10
 Ephesians Chapter 4
◦ Unity in Body
◦ Diversity of Gifts
◦ Renewal in Christ
◦ Ephesians chapter 4 ends with -
◦ [And] be kind to one another, compassionate,
forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in
Christ. 32
Devine Grace is God’s
empowering presence in your
life enabling you to do and
be what you are created to
do and be.
Most people do not understand it is all grace!
Totally unmerited, unearned, unasked for but
freely and generously given to us.
But grace was given to each of us according to
the measure of Christ’s gift. Eph 4:7
 If you were equipped and engaged in
positions that made the most of your talents
and gifts?
 What if everyone in your family, community,
company, department, and team had the
opportunity to do what God uniquely
designed them to do best?
 In 1998, the Father of Strengths Psychology, Donald O. Clifton, Ph.D.
(1924-2003), along with Tom Rath and a team of scientists at
Gallup, created the online StrengthsFinder assessment.
 In 2004, the assessment's name was formally changed to "Clifton
StrengthsFinder" in honor of its chief designer.
 In 2007, building on the initial assessment and language from
StrengthsFinder 1.0, Rath and Gallup scientists released a new
edition of the assessment, program, and website, dubbed
"StrengthsFinder 2.0." Rooted in more than 40 years of research, this
assessment has helped millions discover and develop their natural
talents.
 Over 8.7 million people have taken the assessment
“You are at
your best
when you
do what
God created
you to do
best.”
Think about your “knack” and
then describe your “knack”
with someone near you.
To do what you
were created
to do best,
you need to
defy the
conventional
wisdom of this
world.
Think about and describe a time
you were asked to “work on an
area of opportunity.” How did
that work out? How did you feel?
Which do you
think will help
you improve the
most?
Knowing your
five greatest
strengths or
knowing your
greatest
weaknesses?”

Percent knowing your strengths
The ability to consistently
provide near-perfect
performance in a specific
task.
A strength is a focused combination of
Knowledge
Skills
Talent
Talents are naturally
recurring patterns of
thought, feeling, or
behavior that can be
productively applied.
Talents reflect who
you are, not what
you know.
Talent can be the natural tendency
to:
 Be competitive
 Pick up on the emotions of others
 Thrive under pressure
 Make others laugh
 Recognize the uniqueness in
others
The ability to perform the basic
steps of an activity.
The ability to perform the basic
steps of:
 Adding and subtracting
 Parallel parking
 Checking someone into a hotel
 Preparing a lesson plan
 Building a birdhouse
The information and understanding
you acquire through education,
training, or experience.
Knowledge can be factual:
 The words of a foreign
language
 The books of the Bible
 Electrical engineering
 Accounting
Knowledge can be experiential:
 How to deal with an upset
customer or church member
 How to cope with job related
stress
 Who to call to make things
happen

How Talents Function

Don’t try to put in what God left out.
Instead, try to draw out what God put in.
This is about releasing the potential in
each person – helping them do what
they are created to do best.

Remember a time someone used a barrier label
to describe you. How did it make you feel?
Now that you know it is a Strength, in what
ways do you think differently about the
barrier label?
The Clifton StrengthsFinder®

 Based on over 40 years of research of 8.7

~ Your individual Signature Themes are unique to
you. There is a 1 in 33 million chance that you
will meet someone with your same Top 5 in the
order you have them.
~ There is a 1 in 275,000 chance that you will
meet someone with your same Top 5,
regardless of order.
~ In a study of people in over 26 countries, there
were no significant cultural differences in talent.
To accept your natural,
God-given talents is to
accept yourself the way
God created you.
