Mood Board
I’ve picked out the fonts from the
pictures I’ve sourced so that I can
analyse them. This will help me when
it comes to planning what fonts are
suitable or not suitable for my
magazine brand. For example, the
two fonts in the top left corner are
unsuitable because they are very
genre specific, but I want my
magazine to feature all genre’s.
Unsuitable Fonts
Mood Board Analysis
Is there any repetition in the images you have collected? Repeated colours/images styles/fonts/tone/mood
• The colours blue, green, red and yellow are repeated a lot throughout the images. The tone’s of the colours are bright and connote
energy and a generally fun vibe.
• For the mastheads on the magazine covers, I saw a clear pattern of fonts used that are quite generic and non genre specific. The fonts
are big and bold, and often brightly coloured, making them really grab the reader’s attention.
• For the magazine and gaming pictures, the images used are of strong, characters in ready for action, poses, usually the leader
characters of the game. This connotes strength and confidence, which could inspire the audience to connect with them and want to
be them.
• For the magazine covers, they’ve used words like “exclusive” and “reviewed” this creates the impression that they are important and
are the only real source of information; that they are experts and are talking from experience so the information they give will be
reliable and reputable.
• The pictures of the brand logos are simple but effective. They are widely used across all of the brands advertising, which means that
the audience would instantly recognise that brand. The names and logo are so recognisable, they can even be used separately to
promote the brands and would still be recognised by the audience. By using reputable brands, it will attract the audience and make
them feel like the product is important because they have links to successful companies.
• Whether the images are brightly coloured or use deeper darker tones, they all have colours that complement each other to attract
the audience by making the visually pleasing. Colours that don’t contrast well, would be unattractive to the audience and could put
them off purchasing the product.
How will your mood board influence your final product?
• I will incorporate the colours blue, green, red and yellow into the colour scheme of my brand. By using bright shades of these colours
it will make my magazine brand stand out and grab the audience’s attention. Blue connotes trust, confidence and wisdom; green
connotes creativity; red connotes passion, leadership and strength; yellow connotes intelligence, happiness and energy. These
colours combined will create appeal to my audience by making them feel confidence that the brand can be trusted and that it will be
a reliable source for quality information.
For the primary socioeconomic status, the working class, by using blue in my colour scheme. This will make them feel like the brand is
trustworthy and reliable and that they are spending their money wisely. For the primary age range, 16-24years, by using bright
colours that connote energy and happiness, it will appeal to their youth and want for gaming information presented in a fun format.
The products will appeal to my primary gender, males, by using bright colours like blue and red which connote masculinity, especially
red which can also connote action and danger which they will find thrilling and exciting. Finally, for my primary psychographic, the
needs driven, by using bright colours to highlight buzz words and plugs, it will grab their attention and appeal to their impulsive
nature and by using colours that connote trust and intelligence, it will create an instinctive appeal that the magazine is trustworthy an
d reliable.
• For my magazine brand, I will use a clear, bold font, that will fit in with multiple genres, this will be useful for not only my magazine
masthead, but also for my blog logo and banner.
• For my magazine brand, when I use pictures to feature a game, I will use an image of a lead character, that the audience can relate to
or inspire to be like.
Informal Proposal
Current Idea
Concept I am going to create a UK magazine brand that informs the audience of the latest gaming news. My USP will be to
create a community spirit by featuring all genres of gaming, across all platforms, including new and retro games
and consoles so that the brand will appeal to new and older audiences, to show that all gamers are welcome and
that there will be information and news for everyone who enjoys gaming.
Type of
products you
would make
• Magazine Cover/ 2 page Feature Article
• Blog (Homepage)
• Blog (article)
• Logo and Banner
• Audio article
• Radio advert
• Video (game review)
What you will
need to make
them
In order to make my products I will need Adobe Photoshop, Google images, DaFont website,
WordPress account, video and voice recording software, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Audition.
Audience My product will be aimed primarily at males, aged 16-24years, who fit the needs driven psychographic and are
working class. To achieve this I will incorporate a colour scheme that contrasts well, consisting of blue, green, red
and yellow, because they connote masculinity, strength, trust, intelligence, fun and passion. I will use buzz words
like “exclusive”, “win” and “reviewed” to create excitement for the brand and to ensure the audience knows that
the magazine is trustworthy and reliable. I will create a clear community vibe to show that all gamers are
welcome. I will use strong images of popular characters, that the audience can relate to or would inspire to be
like. I will create a clear, recognisable brand.
Choices
Discounted
ideas
Reasons for not choosing this project
Game Concept • I feel it would be difficult to create multiple products for this idea, on top of creating
the game assets and animating a video, because it is very time consuming to draw
lots of different game assets and to animate them, frame by frame, in Photoshop.
• Also my drawing skills are limited so I feel that I would find it hard to keep to my time
management schedule, if I were to continue with this project. This would limit me to
only be able to create an 8-bit retro style game and although they have become
more popular in recent years, with older audiences seeking nostalgia and younger
audiences enjoying the novelty of retro gaming, the greatest appeal in gaming is for
games that have bigger and better graphics and that is definitely beyond my skillset.
• Finally, the gaming world is so vast and ever-growing that I feel I wouldn’t be able to
create a concept that would be entirely unique.
Band Idea • I discounted this idea because in order to create a band concept, I would need
people to pose as the band, for photos. I would find it hard to source people to help
and also to source costumes and props, in order for them to look the part, so this
could cost me valuable production time and if I couldn’t source props and costumes
for free then it would be expensive to produce the products.
• I also feel that this project will not really work to my strengths, or push me to expand
my skillset as much as the magazine brand would.
• I have no knowledge of music creation, so I would struggle to create an original audio
product, and only a basic knowledge of audio editing, so I feel that I would be out of
my depth with this project and this could lead me to create poor quality products.
