A review of 3 films in our genres
1. A review of 3 films in our genres
I reviewed 1 psychologicalfilm and 2 supernatural films
The psychological film because it was very clever in that aspect and
theme and had some elements in the film that we could use in our own.
The supernaturalfilms included themes we are adding to our film so I
thoughtit was best to watch these and review them.
1. Split
In the beginning of the film it started out a little confusing
learning of the Casey’s background butwhen you see her
flashbacks of her memoriesI felt sympathy for her and sorrow
from what she’s been through. Themoment when they were
kidnapped wasn’t the best because I thought if it was to be
morerealistic the girls would’vefoughtoff more and have
been morevigilant and aware. Later when he starts showing
his ‘personalities’ it gets very intriguing and interesting because we startto see
a differentside of him that’s a victim going through hard things. When we meet
Hedwig it adds humour to the film as he acts like a kid in his adult form. The film
makes you wonder when the girls aregoing to get out and if anyone’sgoing to
find out and it’s so captivating you have to watch it all. When his
counsellor/therapistenters and Casey starts escaping and reading into him and
wondering why he is the way he is, you piece it all together and it annoys me
slightly that she doesn’t get it yet. The slightly horrific changeand horror in this
film is when he begins to change and dragsthe girls to eat them and tear them
apartand I was fearfulthe Casey was struggling to escape and she became the
protagonistI care for by the hardshipsshe’s been through and her
thoughtfulness. The partwhere we see Kevin stops and returnsto his original
self is where the audience sees the victim the true guy and when he then
changes it hurtsthat Casey has to kill him because he won’tstop and he really
isn’t at fault buthis mind is. The ending was a little disappointing being a
psychologicalhorror film when he sees Casey scars he doesn’tkill her and when
we see he hasmoved on someplace else. The end where we see the police alert
her that her abusive uncles hereto pick her up we see hesitant that relived me
slightly because there a chance she may tell everything about him and finally be
safe.
2. 2. Sinister
The film started off with an old creepy
video where an entire family are
hanging off from a tree, creeping me
out how they were struggling to get
free then going limp in seconds. The
video had a sense of old fashioned
twist to it making me feel sympathy for
the family and I liked how it started
straight to a murder. Later on it was
your stereotypical film where the familymoved in the new house with their 2.5
kids. The horror firststarted for me when Hawke began researching the home
made films, finding out why they were getting killed and when he started
printing pictures of the supernatural was when the spook for me came. The
moment when Hawke was speaking on the phonewith the imageon his laptop
screen of Bagul, it was a good jump scare because it was sudden and
unexpected, it started moving towardsHawke as though it’s listening to what
he’s saying on the phone. When we see his son having night terrorsin my mind
I wondered if possibly he may be the one to cause troublebut it was a nice
surprisefor the girlto join in. My favouritepart would have to be when the cop
and Hawke started working together and piecing up the mysteries of the
murder together and when he skype called the professor aboutlegends it got
interesting because I really enjoy myths and legends – it made it more
supernaturaland freaky. I enjoyed how they used his children in the film, when
they moved houses and she knocked all of them out, killed them all and
videoing it, I thoughtit was very smartas they used the daughter who was
pictured innocent at the start to end up being the murderer. WhatI enjoyed
was what she called the tape, because it referenced to how much she loved
painting – it was a sick twist of howshe painted in her family’s blood and calling
the tape “House Painting” I thoughtit was very clever and a little humorousin a
sick and twisted way. Moreover when we met Bagulproperlyface to face was a
huge jump scare, the make-up was brilliantand I was instantly scared because I
didn’texpect that and it shocked me the most throughoutthewhole film.
3. 3. Case 39
The beginning start of the film was a bit stereotypical, it showed the
relationship between the social worker and the child and from then on I
could’veguessed they were to be partnered up soon as the child latched on to
her a lot. The firsttime we were introduced to her and the way she looked, her
hair was darkand always down covering and her skin was always so pale and
she always seemed to have a secret, the way she
smiled like she knew something bad was to happen,
it made her seem very devil like and was obvious that
she was to be the antagonist. When her parentstried
to burn her, it shocked me because it was very
straightforward to the horror, only15 minutesin and
they’re going all vicious on Lily. Later on when the
weird things started happening, thedeaths and
murdersaround her life, I liked how it was built up
and she figured outit was the girl all this time.
Bradley Cooper’sdeath was a very peculiar one and
when I watched it I felt as though the bugswere on
me and it was shocking because all of a sudden a few
led to thousands. Then the snap of his neck was very sickening and I had the
urgeto see if my neck was intact, the whole scene was very played out and
horrifying. Theplot was good but predictablethat at the end all of Emily’s
attempts to kill her wasn’t working and Lily’s death wasn’t very good because it
was just her simply drowning in the car. The only spooky thing therewas Jodelle
Ferland playing Lilith, she madeherself look creepy.
